The Jewish cemetery in Kohlíční Janovice is located on the southern edge of the village in Ke Koupaliste street, in Kutna Hora district. This extinct area served the local Jewish community from 1834 to 1942 and is among the rare preserved witnesses of the Jewish settlement of Central Bohemia. Today it is protected as a cultural monument, although only the remains of the wall and two tombstones remain from the original area.

The cemetery was created because of the growing number of Jews in the village, where the community existed since the 17th century. The most lived here at the end of the 19th century - 192 people. In 1829, the local fraternity founded its own cemetery, because until then, Jews were buried in the Cemetery in Mislavice, Malesh or Cologne. The land was purchased in 1832, the first funeral took place here on 10 February 1834. The area was originally built on a wall and in 1907 extended to 4,107 square metres. It served until 1942 when it was definitively closed.

The original architecture preserved only the remnants of the wall and shrubs. trees grow in the area and grass area is maintained by the tenant of neighbouring land. Two were preserved from the tombstones - one by the east wall and the other turned into a memorial resembling a dead cemetery. Another twenty tombstones found at the construction site in Ondrejov were transported to a new Jewish cemetery in Svetla nad Sazavou.

The fate of the cemetery is linked to dramatic changes in the 20th century. After World War II, the site was decayed. In 1966, the morgue and the grave man's house were demolished. The Hebrew plate was stored in the museum. In 1979- 1985, some tombstones were sold off by Prague's Jewish religious community and the cemetery was further destroyed. In 1985 it was handed over to the State for planned construction, but the project did not take place. After November 1989, the cemetery returned to the care of the Jewish religious community in Prague.

Today the premises are freely accessible and located in a quiet location. Although his condition is not ideal, the visit offers the opportunity to become acquainted with local Jewish history and the fate of Jewish cemeteries in the 20th century. The cemetery reminds not only of the life of local Jews, but also of the processes of the liquidation of Jewish heritage in Communist Czechoslovakia. For tourists and historians, this is a place of significant memory value.

Welcome to the place where time has gone silent and memory becomes visible.

You are standing in front of the last traces of the Jewish cemetery in Zuměřské Janovice - a place that was once the heart of the last rest for the local Jewish community. In front of you, there is only a small part of what was here: the remains of a stone wall that once bounded the sacred space, and the two tombstones that resisted oblivion as time guards. Notice how the air here seems quieter, as if the memories of those who were resting here were still floating above the ground.

This cemetery was established in 1832 when the local Jewish community - which lived in these places since the seventeenth century - acquired land for its own burial ground. The reason was simple: they needed a place where they could rest their dead with respect and according to their habits. Three years earlier, in 1829, local members founded a fraternity that took care of the preparation of the cemetery. From 1834 until 1942, funerals took place here until fate hit this place too. The last resting men here found their eternal rest at a time when the world was going through dark times.

The area was originally smaller, but in 1907 it was extended to an area of nearly 4,000 square metres. Imagine how many tombstones stood here, how the winding paths were lost in the green. Today, all that remains are those two stone commemorative records and fragments of the wall, which remind us that there was once a place of life filled with sadness and respect. Notice how the stones touch the earth - as if they wanted to say: Here we were, here we rested.

Who lies here? Who were those people whose names were carved into these two preserved tombstones? Unfortunately, their stories were lost in the stream of time. We don't know the names of the architects who may have helped build the wall or the names of those who prayed here or cared for the cemetery. All we know is that there were ordinary people here - parents, children, husbands who lived in this village and found their last rest.

Now imagine: in the 1950s, the cemetery was declared a cultural monument. That means someone realized this place must not be forgotten. But fate was cruel - its gradual destruction began in the 1960s. We're standing here today to see what's left. It's like looking into the past, trying to whisper to us, remember.

Let's stop for a moment and perceive this atmosphere. Close your eyes and imagine how prayers used to sound here, how families would gather here, how they would take care of the tombstones. This cemetery was not only a place of burial, but also a place where the community met, where memories shared and memory respected. Today there is only a silent challenge: remember.

There is not only a ruin before you, but a witness to history. A witness to how people lived, loved, suffered and left. And even though no one here anymore puts flowers on tombstones, even though there are no more funerals, this place is still silent about its secrets. Perhaps there were sometimes memories of the holidays, the joys and the sadness that each loss brought.

Before leaving, take a moment to say goodbye to this place. Let yourself be carried away by what remains here - not only stones, but also by the spirit of those who rest here. If you are interested in learning more, you can visit the local museum or library where other records of the history of Jewish communities in this area have been preserved. Whatever you decide to do, know that you've just stood where the past touches the present.

Thank you for taking the time to visit this important place. May you be accompanied by respect for those who have tarried here, and remember that even the smallest traces can bring forth great history. Hi.

The castle Uhlířské Janovice is located in the centre of the village about a kilometre from the cemetery. There is also the church of St. Bartholomew, which is also in the centre of the village. These two places are ideal for a short walk or trip around the area.

The castle and church are historically important and offer additional possibilities for exploring local history.
