The wooden bell tower in the village Holčovice in the district of Bruntál is a storey tower from the 19th century, listed in the list of cultural monuments. The building is remarkable with its origin from the degraded village of Adamov and a specific construction with rain coating.

Limited data are available on the oldest history of the construction. It is only known that it dates from the 19th century and was originally located in the already extinct village of Adamov.

Architecturally, it's a storey wooden structure. The lower part of the tower has the shape of a chamber needle that covers the perimeter roof. On this foundation stands the French bell floor. On the west and south side there are rectangular bell windows with wooden frames and blinds. The whole object ends with a tin tent roof with a cross at the top. The surface of the tower is made of a dusty cladding. At present, the bell doesn't have a bell.

The key moment in the fate of the monument was 1957. That's when the tower was transferred from Adam to Upper Holchovice. The initiator of the transfer was Josef Škrla, a local hospital administrator. The construction was placed in the area of the alcohol department of the branch of the Psychiatric Institute in Opava. The aim was to prevent the destruction of the object due to fire or vandalism.

The object is recognised as a cultural monument; the entry in the list took place before 1988. Even without the bell, the tower remains an authentic testimony of 19th century folk architecture.

The monument represents a rare example of saving an architectural element from a non-existing village. Its visit offers the possibility to see a specific wooden structure that survived thanks to the early intervention of the hospital administrator.

Welcome to the village Holčovice. Right now, you're facing one of the most interesting witnesses in local history. In front of you there is a wooden bell tower, which with its appearance and material brings to the surroundings a sense of peace and old-world charm. It's a building that seems modest at first glance, but if you look at it more carefully, you'll find that it has a story about saving, moving, and human effort to preserve what would otherwise disappear forever.

Let's stop at her origin together. This tower was not originally here. Her journey began in the nineteenth century, about a thousand and eight hundred and fifty, in a place you will not find on maps today. It comes from the extinct village of Adamov. Imagine how this building used to serve the inhabitants of that small community, call them to prayer, or warn them of danger. Unfortunately, however, the fate of the village of Adamov changed and the place gradually ceased to exist. Together with him, this beautiful wooden structure was threatened to disappear.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself, which is right in front of you. Look up and look at its specific design. At the bottom, you'll see a shape called a compact needle. It's a shortened pointy tower that forms a stable foundation. The French bell floor floats above it. In addition, the entire surface of the building is protected by a raincoat, which is a detail which gives it a unique appearance while protecting it from adverse weather effects. It's a very typical solution for people who worked with wood at the time and wanted their work to last as long as possible. If you look at the top where the bell should be, notice one particular feature. The bell doesn't ring at the moment. So the silence that you now perceive here is part of its current form.

This object is not just an ordinary piece of wood, it is a registered cultural monument. But how did she get from one place to another? Here comes a character named Josef Škrla. He was a man who was a local hospital administrator at the time. Josef Škrla was not indifferent to what was happening with the monuments of the extinct village of Adamov. He saw that the wooden tower in the original place was rotting and falling apart. So he decided to become the initiator of her rescue. In the year of the thousand and nineteen hundred and fifty-seven, thanks to his efforts, the tower was transferred from Adam's to the Upper Holčovice. Imagine the task at that time to decompose or move this heavy wooden structure through the landscape to prevent its complete destruction. Thanks to this bold effort, we can stand here today and admire its shapes.

It's fascinating to think that this building is actually an exiled man who found a new home. It's a reminder of a place that no longer exists, but its spirit in the form of this tower still lives. It's kind of like a mystery from the past that reminds us how fragile human settlements are and how important memory is. If not Josef Škrla and his vision, there would probably be nothing left of this bell tower today but a bunch of rotten boards in the woods. Instead, it stands here as a proud symbol of survival.

Now take a closer look at this building. Feel the smell of wood and think about how many generations of people have passed by it and how many times the sound of a bell has sounded, which can no longer be heard. Take a walk around her, look at the details of her sheathing, and imagine what the world looked like in a thousand eight hundred and fifty when it was first built.

I hope you're interested in this short story about the wood bell in Holčovice. It's a small piece of history that tells us that even if something dies, with the help of the right people, it can be preserved for future generations. We now invite you to explore further the surroundings and discover other hidden treasures of this region. Thank you for your attention and wish you a pleasant continued journey.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is late spring or autumn, when the colors of the surrounding nature perfectly complement the wooden structure. Transport to the village is possible by car as well as by public connections, check the specific path in the maps. On the way we recommend shoes suitable for the field and water with us.

For the best photos we recommend to come to the morning or late afternoon lights that highlight the structure of the wood and details of the storey structure. The best angles are from the ground level to excel the tower height.

Families with children can connect the way with walking around the village and finding traces of extinct settlements, which can be an interesting educational experience about the history of the region.

Since it is an object in public space, the construction can be admired from outside from any angle.

Themed route

Here is the route design focused on the main monument:

1. Zvonička (Holčovice) (tower) - The main destination of the trip. This building is a unique architectural element of the village and offers the possibility to visit the tower itself. 2. Area of the bell tower (courtyard) - Space in the immediate vicinity of the tower. Ideal place to relax and observe the details of the building up close. 3. Around the tower (walk) - A short journey in the vicinity of the monument. It allows you to see the building fit into the village landscape.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surrounding tower wakes up in green and fresh air brings a sense of renewal. Soft spring light is ideal for capturing details of the building without sharp shadows. We recommend shoes suitable for wet grass and visit in the morning when nature is the most lively.

In the summer months the landscape is dominated by bright sun and rich colors surrounding vegetation. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, typical of the main holiday. It is best to come early in the morning or in the evening to avoid heat, and not forget light clothing and sun protection.

Autumn covers the memory with golden and red tones of leaves, creating a nostalgic mood. The air is clear and the lighting has a warm feel that highlights the texture of the masonry. It is advisable to choose layered clothes and visit a place in the afternoon when the sun falls to the horizon.

Zimą can be surrounded by snow, which gives it a calm and dreamy look. The contrast of a dark object with a white landscape is very strong. A warm jacket, hat and solid footwear with a non-slip sole are necessary because of the frost and possible slippery surface.
