Adršpach (zámek) Chateau

Adršpach Castle, located in Dolní Adršpach within the Královéhradecký region of the Czech Republic, is a Renaissance-style zámek with significant historical importance. Constructed around 1596 by the Bogdanecký family, it has seen numerous expansions and renovations over the centuries. The origins of Adršpach Castle date back to a time when Bohemia was part of the Habsburg Monarchy, experiencing religious conflicts between Catholics and Protestants while Renaissance art and architecture flourished across Europe. The castle replaced an earlier fortress owned by the Berků z Dubé family. By 1596, it had been established by the Bogdanecký family, who developed it into a significant Renaissance structure.

Architecturally, Adršpach Castle features a two-story rectangular building with a distinctive pentagonal tower in its southern section, which once housed a chapel. The ground floor of this tower originally served as storage for food and the kitchen, while upper floors accommodated living spaces, dining rooms, and offices. In the 18th century, an administrative building and agricultural courtyard were added to the north side. A pseudorenaissance balcony was later attached above the main entrance facing east.

Ownership changed hands several times throughout its history. Initially held by the Bogdanecký family from its construction until the early 17th century, Adam Bohdanecký expanded the structure during his tenure. In a dramatic turn of events in 1611, Adam Bohdanecký and others perished in an explosion at Jičín Castle while resolving a dispute over the Smiřice estate. The castle later came into the possession of Jan Nepomuk Nádherný in 1828, marking nearly two centuries under the Nádherný family's ownership until their dispossession in 1945 due to the Beneš Decrees.

During its time with the Nádherný family, the castle underwent significant architectural changes. Notable renovations were undertaken in 1886 that enhanced its structure and aesthetic appeal. However, after World War II, it fell into disrepair, leading to a period of neglect where its park was listed as a threatened cultural monument due to overgrowth and lack of maintenance.

In recent years, Adršpach Castle has undergone revitalization efforts since being purchased by the town of Adršpach in 2012. By 2014, it opened to the public for the first time, offering attractions such as a horology museum on one floor and historical exhibitions on another. Visitors can explore displays related to linen weaving and textile production, engage with an escape room themed around "The Third Prince," and enjoy refreshments in the castle's café. The town has initiated phases of park restoration and is working on reconstructing the facade of the entrance side, including its historical balcony.
