Aqueduct over the Kamenice River in České Kamenice is a historical water work located in the cadastral territory of Horní Kamenice the municipality of Česká Kamenice, the district of Děčín. Built in 1872, it served as part of a plant for the propulsion of a wool cloth recycling plant. Its history is closely linked to the development of industry and technology in the late 19th century, when the need for mechanical energy for various processes increased. In 2021, the aqueduct was recognised as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, which underlines its importance not only from a technical point of view, but also as an important part of local history.

The creation of the aqueduct is linked to the activities of Christian Kreibich, who built a factory for recycling wool rags. This plant used water power to drive a nine-meter water wheel, which was a common solution for mechanical processes of that time. In 1912 the factory was modernized by the new owner Meinľs Erben, which replaced the original water wheel with a 9.4 meters diameter electric current. This change reflected technological progress and the transition from mechanical energy to electricity.

The aqueduct is built as a stone bridge with one semicircular arch that crosses the Kamenice River. The arches are embossed with sandstone blocks and the whole piece is made of quarry stone with concrete support for wooden trough. This gutter was part of a waterjet that started about 200 meters from the aqueduct and led to factory machines. The water drive represented a wooden trough located on concrete support, which was a typical solution for maintaining water in a particular direction.

The ownership of the aqueduct and related equipment changed during its history. The original owner was Christian Kreibich, which built the factory and the water drive in 1872. After modernization in 1912, Meinľs Erben took over, which installed the power plant. This change not only reflected technological progress, but also meant a new era in the use of hydroenergy.

Key events in the history of the aqueduct include its original construction in 1872, modernization in 1912 and a declaration for cultural monument in 2021. These events highlight not only the technical but also the historical value of the aqueduct as an important element of local infrastructure.

Today the aqueduct is accessible to visitors and is worth visiting not only because of its historical value, but also as part of the cultural heritage of the village Česká Kamenice. His recognition as a cultural monument underlines the importance of preserving technical and industrial monuments for understanding the history of the region.

The aqueduct across the Kamenice River is therefore not only a technical engineering excellence but also an important witness to industrial development and technological changes in the region. His recognition as a cultural monument underlines the need to preserve and appreciate historical heritage that helps us understand the past and its impact on the present. Visiting this aqueduct is an opportunity to explore not only technical innovation, but also the cultural identity of the region of České Kamenice.

Welcome to this extraordinary water work. You're standing right where the power of flowing water and human art is united. Look before you at this impressive construct, which surpasses the trough of the Kamenice River. You may be interested at first glance in its simplicity, but believe me, in this simplicity there is a great story about progress, about trying to control the elements of nature and how the world around us was changing. Feel the atmosphere, feel the sound of water flowing beneath you, and imagine what this object looked like over the centuries ago, when it was the heart of the entire local industry.

Let's go back in time together now. To understand why this water unit is standing here, we have to look at the year one thousand eight hundred seventy-two. This was the time when our country was changing, when small villages and towns became important industrial nodes. People at the time were looking not only for comfort, but for energy. They needed a force that could power the machines. It was during this period that this aqueduct was built as a key part of the waterjet. Its purpose was not only aesthetic activity, but a very practical and important task. He was supposed to transport the water across the river so that it could power the factory, which was dedicated to reforming old wool rags. Imagine the activity, the constant movement and the need for a constant flow of water so that machines can work. This factory was part of the economic boom at the time and this aqueduct was its pillar of life. The whole system was closely linked to the development of technical procedures in the late nineteenth century, when the need for mechanical power for various production increased.

Now pay attention to the construction itself, which is right in front of your eyes. Note how this water part is designed. The main and most important element that you're seeing right now is one big half-circle arch. This shape is not random. The arc is one of the most stable and firm forms in architecture, which can transfer the huge weight of water and the entire structure directly to the foundations. Look at the geometry, the clean line that floats over the stream. This one arch had to be strong enough to withstand the water surge that was flowing towards the factory. But in time, things changed. While it was originally used to drive a water wheel which rotated under the water and transformed the movement of flowing water into the motion of machines, later its function changed again. With the arrival of the new time, this water part became part of the technical plant for the power plant. So you can see how one building could adapt to the needs of different generations, from mechanical propulsion to electrical power generation.

This successful work and the development of this entire industrial region were not just stones and water, but above all people. The history of this place is closely linked to names that at that time meant progress and entrepreneurship. In connection with the development of this place and its technical equipment, names such as Christian Kreibich or Meinľs Erben appear in history. We must also not forget the company L. Bill and her associates. These people and companies were the movers of the world back then. They were visionaries who believed in the power of technology and in the ability to use what nature offers us for a better life and the flourishing of trade. Their work and investments have enabled this region to become an important place for production and industrial activity.

You may now wonder why this object is so important even now that we no longer need water for factories as we used to. Here's one very interesting thing. This aqueduct is not just an old remnant of the past, which simply stands. In the year two thousand twenty-one something very significant happened. This water unit was officially recognised as a cultural monument to the Czech Republic. This is recognition of its high historical and technical value. It happened because this object is a living witness to the industrial revolution and shows us how humanity learns to use natural resources. It is proof of our history that we must protect for future generations. It's a monument to human ingenuity and technical progress that led us here.

Thank you for taking the time to come to this place. Now that you know the story of this one arch that crosses the Kamenice River, we suggest you continue your walk. Take a look at the surrounding landscape, feel the calm of the place, and try to visualize in your mind the machines that once revolved here because of the power of water. We wish you a beautiful and inspiring encounter with history. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the surroundings of the water works awaken to life and the landscape around the Horní Kamenice rich green. The air is fresh and the details of the building stand out in bright, clean light. I recommend moisture-resistant shoes, because roads can be muddy after melting snow. The best is to come in the morning when nature is the purest.

The summer months bring a radiant sun and dense leaves that create a pleasant shadow at the aqueduct. The atmosphere is full of energy and the colors of the surroundings are very rich. Due to the largest number of visitors in the high season, you will vote for a very early arrival. Don't forget light clothes and plenty of fluids.

In autumn, the surroundings of the monument turn into gold and red tones, creating a melancholy mood. Frequent fog gives the water structure a mysterious look. Layer clothes are suitable to protect you from the cold wind. The ideal time for visiting is late afternoon, when light gently hits stone arches.

In winter, the Upper Kamenice reigns calm and freezing purity, while snow can highlight the shape of the aqueduct. The landscape is so dense and quiet. It is necessary to have warm clothing and fixed footwear against glide. Count on shorter access time and recommend a visit in the morning when the most light is.
