Trmice Castle

On the western outskirts of Trmice, surrounded by a park and a meagre flow of Bílina, there is a new castle - a neo-gothic building which is one of the remarkable noble settlements of northern Bohemia. As a cultural monument, one of the few preserved documents represents the region's representative architecture from the second half of the nineteenth century.

Trmice has an older history with mansions. There was a so-called lower fortress, which probably disappeared already during the Thirty Years' War, and an old castle which was only demolished in 1956. The existing neo-gothic building was created between 1856 and 1863, when Nostic had it built. The author of the project was Viennese architect Heinrich Ferstel.

The building has a complex plan and the height moves between one and two floors. The most significant element is the prism tower with semi-rounded windows, whose peak is clipped by balustrations. The facade is broken by corner lizens and moldings, the windows are large and double. The whole works in a coherent way and shows how the neo-gothic style applied Central European aristocracy to the construction of rural residences in the second half of the nineteenth century.

The castle is located in a park surrounded by the White Meander. Part of the complex is a circular swimming pool and bridge over a former mill drive - small elements that add up to the character of the place and resemble the original landscape composition of the mansion.

In the second half of the twentieth century the castle was used by the district museum. Today, there is a cultural centre with an exhibition dedicated to regional industry and model rail - topics that reflect the industrial past of the region. The visitor gets a double experience here: neo-gothic architecture surrounded by greenery on one side and thematic exposure with local overlap on the other.
