Březina (hradiště) Hillfort

Březina (hradiště) is an early medieval fortification located in the Březina village, Rokycany district. It sits on the hill of the Hradiště in the western Křivoklátský highlands. The site has preserved stone walls of 1.44 hectares and is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. Its importance lies in providing views of settlements from the 9th to 10th century, which offer a view of the historical landscape of Bohemia during major political and cultural changes.

The origin of Březina (hradiště) dates back to the early Middle Ages, with archaeological evidence suggesting housing until the prehistoric era. The ceramic fragments dated to the 9th and part of the 10th century show its use at this time. Moreover, the only artifact in Hallstatt culture provides evidence of an earlier settlement. The strategic position of the fortifications in the Křivoklát hills would make it important for defence and local administration, as the Czechs have been integrated into wider European development.

Březina (hradiště) was originally a two-part construction with stone walls 5 to 6 metres high. These areas cover the main area, while the remains of the seized site on the western side have largely disappeared, but have been documented in 19th century plans. A significant feature of the site is a significant stone surrounded by a half-metre circular wall located in its northeast part, associated with the legendary priestess Kazi.

The first archaeological research in Březina (hradiště) was carried out between 1832 and 1834 by Kaspar Šternberk, owner of the nearby Brno Castle. During the investigation he cooperated with Václav Krolmus and Matyah Kalina from Jäthenstein. In 1988, other excavations led by Jaroslav Baštou uncovered fragments of iron objects and a considerable amount of slag, adding to the understanding of the historical use of the site.

Today Březina (hradiště) remains accessible through the branch of the red marked tourist path leading to Volchlu. The well preserved stone walls provide a tangible connection to the past, making it an interesting destination for those interested in early medieval history and archaeology. Its status as a cultural monument underlines its importance while preserving the regional heritage.
