The building of the Czech Radio Pilsen is a late-functionalist building located on the Square of Peace in Pilsen, more specifically in Bory. It originated between 1947 and 1956 and represents one of the first buildings in Czechoslovakia designed specifically for radio equipment. In 2002 it was officially recognised as a cultural monument.

Czech broadcasting in Pilsen began on 5 May 1945 when Czech patriots occupied a central transmitter located in a bunker in the estuary of Radbuza and Máže rivers in Štrunček orchards. A day later, on May 6th, Plzeň was liberated by the American army and the broadcast continued together. Josef Skupa participated in the launch of radio, which took place daily from 7:15 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. A month later, the studio became the first post-war outside Prague station under the Czechoslovak Radio.

In 1946 an architectural competition was announced for the construction of a separate building won by a team of architects Karel Tausenau, František Hurta and Václav Pavelka. The implementation took place during the communist era, which was reflected in centralised planning and functional, simple architectural solutions.

The construction was designed in three stages. In the first phase (1947- 1953) was built the west wing with a plan of L. The second stage, completed in 1956, added a rectangular eastern part. The third stage, which was to include the concert hall, was never implemented.

The building is a two-storey building with a roof of flat shape, built in the style of late functionalism. The facade is decorated with ceramic tiles and the windows are symmetrically arranged in regular belts. The interior includes several radio studios and office spaces. The main entrance is oriented west into the park near the Square of Peace, near the tram stop of the same name.

The building is among the best examples of Czech late functionalism and confirms its cultural heritage status since 2002. It is an important technical and architectural evidence of the development of radio broadcasting and is worth visiting especially from the point of view of the architecture of the mid-20th century.

Welcome to this fascinating place, which is an important part of Pilsen's cultural memory. You are standing in front of the Czech Radio building in South Suburb, one of the first in your kind in our country. This functional building with its symmetrically located windows and ceramic tiles on the facade attracts attention with its uniqueness.

Let's dive into the history of this place. The building was built between 1947 and 1953, with subsequent enlargement in 1956. It was designed as one of the first locations intended directly for radio studio needs in Czechoslovakia. Architects Karel Tausenau, František Hurta and Václav Pavelka managed to create a building that not only met the needs of the time, but also overcame its innovative functionality. Its architectural design was awarded and recognised as a cultural monument in 2002.

Look up at the facade with its harmonious arrangement. Note how ceramic tiles supply the building with character and elegance. The symmetry of the Kon adds an impression of balance and effectiveness, which is a typical feature of functionalism.

Although specific historical figures associated with this building are not widely known, their work has, however, left a permanent print on the Pilsen landscape. The architects who won the contest on the design of this mansion became pillars of modern architectural design in this area.

The interesting thing is that this building was one of the first designed especially for radio applications. This makes it not only an architectural work, but also a witness to technological progress and cultural evolution.

Now that you've noticed the key details, I invite you to explore this place again. Take a look at the surrounding area and let us address you with the history and architecture that stands here.

Thank you for your visit to the Czech Radio Plzeň building. I hope you enjoyed this guide and it brings you a new perspective on this fascinating memory.

Tips for visitors

For the best experience we recommend a visit on bright days, when sunlight beautifully highlights clean lines and building shapes. The ideal time is morning or late afternoon when light is soft and suitable for shooting architecture.

Traffic to the place is very easy. The building is located near the tram stop of the Square of Peace, so you can easily use public transport.

When visiting, take with you mainly comfortable shoes, because the building is situated near a forest park. If you are planning photography, prepare a device to capture the details of the facade and interesting views from nature.

In the surrounding area you can take a short walk along the Square of Peace or use the forest park to relax. For families with children, walking in the park is an ideal way to spend time in nature right next to the sights.

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the building comes to life along with the surrounding greenery of South Suburb. The soft spring light beautifully highlights clean lines of architecture and the air is full of freshness. I recommend visiting a place in the morning where peace and nature are in full bloom. Put on light layers because spring weather is very variable.

The summer season brings sharp sun and deep shadows that give the facade a plastic look. The atmosphere is full of energy and urban activity. Because of higher temperatures and more people, it's best to come first thing in the morning to avoid the greatest heat. Don't forget light summer clothes and plenty of fluids to go.

The background of the building is coloured in gold and brown tones, creating a melancholy contrast with the materials of the building. The fog of the morning clock gives the place a mysterious mood and peace. It is convenient to come in the afternoon when light hits the walls more gently. Don't forget the waterproof coat or umbrella in case of precipitation.

In winter, the construction works very hard and monumentally, especially if it is surrounded by white snow. The atmosphere is quiet and in advent time the surroundings are more cosy. It is necessary to wear warm winter clothes and solid shoes. I recommend that we monitor the shortened opening times that are common in this period.
