Český pomologický ústav School building

Český pomologický ústav in Brno-Bohunice is a historical monument located at Lána 34 in the village Bohunice. Established as a fruit institution, this institute has been a key centre for horticultural and aid studies since the beginning of the 20th century. Its importance lies not only in its original purpose, but also in architectural features designed by Dusan Jurkovic and its changes over the years.

The creation of the Czech Institute of Pomological Sciences is connected with František Suché, who promoted the establishment of the institution in 1901. Although the teaching started on 4 February of the same year, the building was not used until 1904 after the construction was completed. Over the years, the institution has evolved under various directors, such as František Markus, who introduced two years of study in 1913 and contributed to the development of the school. During its existence, the institution underwent several changes in the name and focus, from the Regional Assistance Institute to the Central Garden School Brno - Bohunice.

The architecture of the building is the work of Dusan Jurkovic, which makes it a unique example of his building art. Despite its sobrier appearance compared to other works, the building retains a poetic atmosphere without remaining decorative elements. Over the years, various modifications and extensions were carried out under the direction of František Markus and later Vladimir Dvorský, who introduced boarding school.

The history of governance and ownership of the institution is rich in change. After a number of directors, such as Jan Cígler, T. Steinbhlink and Oldřich Stávek, there were major changes in 2004 when the school was cancelled and its teaching transferred to SOU Rajhrad. After cancellation, the land started to be restituted and sold by various groups, leading to the loss of the school's original scope.

Key events in the history of the Institute include its foundation, changes in the study programme and architectural reconstruction. In the first decade of the 21st century, there was restitution and sale of land, which led to the loss of the school's original scope. Despite these changes, the building was declared protected in 2010.

Today, the building is located in a state of unused and decaying, which is the result of the cancellation of school operations. The city of Brno is interested in selling the building to November Rain, but this plan has not yet been implemented. Despite its unutilization, it is worth visiting thanks to its historical and architectural value.
