Nemocnice Bohunice in Brno represents a large-scale medical facility which forms the main premises of the Faculty Hospital Brno. It is located on the Bohunic and Old Lisková cadastres in the streets of Jihlava and Netroufalka and serves its importance as a modern medical centre including traumacenter for adults.

After the creation of Czechoslovakia, the original area of the city disease was acquired by the Faculty of Science of the newly established University. The Institute was therefore temporarily moved to the military buildings of the emigration camp in Svakoplořice in 1921. In the following years, the search for suitable sites for the Brno disease was carried out until a place above Bohunicemi was selected in 1931, along the road to Jihlava and Prague. In the period of the creation of the primary site in the 1930's Czechoslovakia faced the consequences of the economic crisis and the development of modern functionalist architecture. The second wave of development in the 1960s took place at the time of political easing and subsequent normalisation, when the then Czechoslovak health service necessarily needed capacity modernisation, as the main facility, the hospital at St. Anne's, almost served.

The area began to be established in the 1930s in a functionalist style according to the Oskar Pořisky project. In the 1960s, a new project was developed under the direction of Miroslav Spurný, which included buildings of the original disease. The actual construction of the functionalist complex with 750 beds started in 1933 and the total cost of construction amounted to CZK 14200,000. The first stage of two pavilions with accessories was launched in October 1934 and the remaining pavilions were put into operation exactly a year later. At the turn of the millennium and in modern history, further construction and modernization continued according to the designs of new architects, for example according to the project Zdeněk Janský. The study of Bedřich Rozhnal from the 1940s and 1950s was not carried out.

The premises were owned first by the city of Brno, later by state institutions. During World War II, there was a back-up military hospital in the buildings. The operation of the Institute was renewed in September 1945, four years later it was nationalized and it was named the State Hospital for Old Age Diseases. In 1952, however, the institution was converted into a clinic for infectious diseases. For economic and organizational reasons, the hospital was merged in 1998 with the Faculty of Obstetrics and the Faculty of Children's Hospital J. G. Mendel at the Faculty Hospital Brno.

Key events include the year 1933, when the construction of the functionalist complex started, and on 11 March 1969, when the cornerstone of the new clinical hospital was laid. At the end of 1989 the central height building of the bed tract of Hall L was opened for 1028 beds. In 2008, the hospital became a traumacentre for adults for the South Moravian Region and Zlin Region and for the Vysočina Region. In 2024 the construction of the new headquarters of the Centre of Cardiovascular and Transplant Surgery began and in September 2025 the foundation stone of the new five-story pharmacy was tapped.

Today this object serves as an indispensable part of Czech health care with ongoing plans for further development, such as the construction of a new obstetrics complex. The historical functionalist building of the original disease resembles the interwar construction era of this Brno facility.

Welcome to the site with rich history and fascinating architectural legacy - hospital Bohunice in Brno. You are facing an extensive medical complex, which is part of the Brno University Hospital. In front of you is an elegant building with functionalist architecture, whose black and white line and geometric regularity immediately captures you.

Let's dive into the history of this place. This complex was founded between 1933 and 1935 according to the design of architect Oskar Pořisky. He originally served as an urban disease, but during World War II he turned into a back-up military hospital. In 1969 a cornerstone was laid for the new premises of the clinical hospital and subsequently, in 1989, opened its doors to the central height building of the bedside tract. In 1998 there was a merger with the Faculty of Obstetrics and the Faculty of Children's Hospital J. G. Mendel, making this complex one of the most important medical facilities in the region.

Look up and see the elegant line of functionalist architecture that Oskar Pořízka brought into life. This style is visible in the symmetry of the facade and the use of modern building materials. Now notice the detail - geometric elements that give the building beauty and simplicity.

Among the key personalities associated with this monument is the architect Oskar Pořízka. Its design embodies the functional beauty of functionalism, which at that time was a very popular movement in construction. Architect Miroslav Spurný and Zdeněk Janský also contributed to the development of this complex.

The interesting thing is that the original resort of the urban disease after the creation of Czechoslovakia served as a place for the Faculty of Science of the newly established university. The Institute was temporarily placed in Svakolovice, which reflects the dynamics and adaptability of this place.

Now that you have looked at this historical complex, we invite you to continue to explore other parts of the Brno University Hospital. Every alley and every wing has a story waiting to be discovered. Thank you for your visit and we hope you find yourself here inspired.

Tips for visitors

A tour of the historical part of the area is best carried out during the morning hours of the working week, when the surrounding area is slightly subdued with the operation of the hospital and light ideally affects the functionalist facade.

Transport availability is provided by urban public transport vehicles, which stop directly at the main entrances along large road haulage, with large stalls available for passenger cars throughout the health complex.

With us we recommend to take comfortable shoes for walking across a large area, identification document in case of verification of the entrance to the indoor premises and basic refreshments, as the area serves primarily its purpose and the possibility of buying is limited.

To photograph functionalist architecture, choose the morning clock when the sun's rays best highlight the clean lines of the original urban disease and geometrically accurate windows of the main building.

In the immediate surroundings defined by the streets of Jihlava and Netroufalka in the urban areas of Bohunice and Staré Lískovec there is a modern development and shopping zone which continuously follow the historical core of this Brno complex.
