Chýnov is a historical site within Libčice nad Vltavou municipality in the Central Bohemian Region of the Czech Republic. Originally an independent village, it joined Libčice nad Vltavou in 1924, forming its western part. The area features a well-preserved archaeological site in the Chýnovský háj forest, with burial mounds from the Bronze Age to the early La Tène period (6th to 5th centuries BCE). These mounds offer insights into ancient cultural practices and societal structures.

Chýnov's origins trace back to Dalimil's Chronicle, indicating its existence before the Battle of Tábor in 1420. During the Hussite Wars in 1421, Prague citizens confiscated it from an unknown owner. By 1548, Vladislav Abdan Bezdružický z Kolovrat owned Chýnov and sold it to Vilém z Lobkovic. In 1619, Fridrich z Bílé acquired the site but was executed in 1621 on Old Town Square in Prague, leading to its return to the Lobkovic family.

The Chýnovský háj forest is significant for its ancient burial mounds, providing a tangible link to past funerary practices and societal structures of the Bronze Age and early La Tène period. These preserved mounds allow historians and archaeologists to study cultural transitions in Central Europe during this era.

Throughout history, Chýnov experienced various ownership changes due to political upheaval. Notably, it was confiscated by Prague citizens during the Hussite Wars from an unknown owner. By 1548, Vladislav Abdan Bezdružický z Kolovrat owned it and sold it to Vilém z Lobkovic. In 1619, Fridrich z Bílé owned Chýnov before his execution in 1621, after which the estate returned to the Lobkovic family.

Today, Chýnov attracts those interested in historical landscapes and ancient cultures. The preserved burial mounds offer a glimpse into the past without extensive modern infrastructure. Visitors can enjoy the tranquility of the Chýnovský háj forest while reflecting on its rich history.

Historical events

Chýnov is mentioned in Dalimil's Chronicle, indicating its existence prior to the Battle of Tábor (1420).

In 1619, Chýnov was owned by Fridrich z Bílé before his execution on Old Town Square in Prague.

Owners

In 1421, during the Hussite Wars, Chýnov was confiscated by Prague citizens from an unknown owner. By 1548, it belonged to Vladislav Abdan Bezdružický z Kolovrat and was sold to Vilém z Lobkovic. In 1619, Fridrich z Bílé owned it before being executed in 1621, after which it returned to the Lobkovic family.

Points of interest

- Despite its small size, Chýnov was significant enough to be mentioned in Dalimil's Chronicle, indicating its importance long before the Battle of Tábor in 1420. This early mention highlights how even smaller settlements played roles in historical narratives.

- During the tumultuous Hussite Wars, Prague citizens seized control of Chýnov from an unknown owner in 1421. This act reflects the chaotic nature of property ownership during times of conflict and upheaval in medieval Bohemia.

- The site's history was marked by a dramatic turn when Fridrich z Bílé acquired it in 1619, only to be executed two years later for his involvement in the Bohemian Revolt against Habsburg rule. His execution led to Chýnov reverting to the Lobkovic family, illustrating how political shifts could drastically alter ownership.

- The well-preserved burial mounds at Chýnovský háj forest provide rare insights into ancient funerary practices and societal structures from the Bronze Age to the early La Tène period. These mounds serve as a tangible connection to past civilizations in Central Europe, offering clues about cultural transitions over centuries.

- Today's tranquil setting of Chýnov contrasts sharply with its tumultuous history, attracting visitors interested in exploring historical landscapes without modern distractions. The preserved archaeological site offers a unique opportunity to reflect on the enduring legacy of ancient cultures amidst natural beauty.

Chýnov is today the western part of Libčic nad Vltavou. For a long time, however, it was an independent village and it was only joined to Libčic in nineteen twenty-four. On its edge lies a small forest called Chýnovský háj. It is precisely in this forest that the oldest thing that has been preserved here is located: prehistoric burial mounds.

The burial mound cemetery in Chýnovský háj is well preserved. Its origins go back to the Bronze Age and burials continued here until the early La Tène period. The most commonly cited dates are the sixth to fifth century before our era. The mounds are therefore much older than the village itself.

The village, however, also has a long history. It is mentioned already in Dalimil's Chronicle, where it appears under the name Chejnov. What happened to it after the Battle of Turský pole, we do not know. Shortly before fourteen twenty, it belonged to some Prague burgher whose name has not been preserved. At the beginning of the Hussite Wars, in fourteen twenty-one, the people of Prague confiscated it from him and the village gradually became depopulated in the following years. The land registers from fifteen forty-eight also have a record of Chýnov.

Before sixteen nineteen, Chýnov was held by Vladislav Abdan Bezdružický z Kolovrat and he sold it to Vilém z Lobkovic. A troubled fate awaited the next owner, Friedrich z Bílé. In sixteen twenty-one, he was executed in the Old Town Square and Chýnov then fell to the Lobkovics for a long time.

From Chýnov also comes one amusing anecdote from eighteen eighty-two. There used to be a pond on the village green that served as a water supply in case of fire. Once, during a cloudburst, it overflowed. Water from Chýnovský háj carried a lot of debris into it and churned up the mud on the bottom. The water surface turned black and all sorts of rubbish floated on it. Someone then declared that he had seen an alligator in the pond. The news spread quickly and most of the locals confirmed it. When they cleaned out the pond, naturally no alligator was found in it. The neighbors from Libčic and Letek seized on this incident and reminded the people of Chýnov of it for many years to come.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit Chýnov is during the late spring or early autumn months, from May to September. During this period, the weather is generally pleasant, making it ideal for exploring the outdoor archaeological site and surrounding forest area. The natural light is also optimal for photography, especially in the morning when the sun casts a soft glow over the landscape.

Public transportation can be used to reach Libčice nad Vltavou, from where you can walk or take local transport to the site. It's advisable to check current routes and schedules in advance using a travel planner.

When visiting Chýnov, it is recommended to bring comfortable walking shoes, as there may be uneven terrain, especially if exploring the burial mounds within the forest area. A hat, sunscreen, and water are also essential for comfort during your visit. Additionally, bringing a camera with a zoom lens can enhance your experience by capturing detailed images of the site.

For photography enthusiasts, the best spots at Chýnov include the ancient burial mounds in the Chýnovský háj forest area. Early morning or late afternoon light provides the most dramatic and appealing conditions for photos. The surrounding natural landscape offers a picturesque backdrop that complements the historical significance of the site.

Nearby attractions within 30 minutes include the town of Libčice nad Vltavou, which adds historical context to your visit with its charming architecture and local museums. For families with children, consider exploring the nearby recreational areas in Chýnovský háj forest, where there are opportunities for nature walks and picnics.

Practical tips include wearing layers to accommodate fluctuating temperatures and arriving early to enjoy the site before the crowds increase during weekends.

Summer: The summer season at Chýnov is characterized by long daylight hours, which provide ample time for exploration under bright sunshine that accentuates the historical structures' details. This period often sees an influx of visitors, especially on sunny days, making it advisable to arrive early to secure a good spot and avoid large crowds. As daylight hours shorten, planning your visit around midday can ensure you have enough time to fully appreciate the archeological treasures.

Shorter days mean visits are best planned for midday when there is still natural light available, though artificial lighting can also enhance certain features of the site. It's essential to dress warmly in layers and wear sturdy footwear due to potentially icy conditions. The reduced number of visitors allows for an intimate exploration experience, making it a perfect time for those who appreciate history amidst a peaceful winter setting.
