Císařský náhon s mostem in Pardubice-Old Town is a unique preserved water-economy construction of the late Gothic period in Bohemia. It is located in the heart of the historic heart of the city, between Werner's waterfront and Church Street, and is protected as a cultural monument.

This drive, connected to the Original Channel, is a rare example of the region's technical and economic development at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries. It was created as part of an extensive water system that supplied the city with water and maybe even powered mills or other water works. The exact date of its creation is not quite clear, but historical sources date it to late Gothic, i.e. the end of the 15th and early 16th century.

Architecturally, it is a late Gothic channel whose original structure has been preserved in the area of Werner's waterfront and Church Street. The most important element is the bridge that served as a support for the Meat Stones Building. This business building was the center of meat and other food sales, reflecting the economic activity of the city.

The drive and bridge form a coherent whole that illustrates both technical and social aspects of medieval life. Its preservation is exceptional, since similar water-management structures have not been preserved to such an extent in the Czech Republic. Today, the drive is open to the public and offers the opportunity to see how the city's water system has worked in the past.

There are other historical monuments such as the church of St. James, which complements the picture of the medieval city. The drive is part of a wider water system, which included the Original Channel, and its visit allows you to familiarise yourself with engineering solutions of the past. It is a unique opportunity for tourists and historically focused visitors to see and understand the importance of this monument at a time when it was part of important commercial and economic infrastructure.

Welcome to the unique monument that will reveal the secrets of the old waterways and trade! You are standing in front of the Imperial Drive - a preserved water channel from late Gothic, which once powered the entire Pardubice and associated with another important water piece, the Original Channel. There's a thin, but important water road running the city's life centuries ago. And above it, as if it were protecting it, is a bridge, on which stood one of the most important buildings of the Old Town - meat shop, where merchants and craftsmen met. Look around you: here comes technology and history, every stone carries a story of the past.

Let's go back to when this drive was made. It was at the turn of the 15th and 16th centuries, when Pardubice grew and needed a reliable source of water. The imperial drive was part of a larger network that provided water for mills, breweries and houses. Its construction was the work of unknown masters who could work with water as a living element. If you look downstream, imagine how there were wooden boats floating down this channel with goods or how water was drawn from here for the needs of the city. It was a matter of life - without it, Pardubice would not be presented as we know them.

Now pay attention to what you're seeing. There is a narrow, but deep channel in front of you whose walls are made of stone and plaster, as it was typical of the buildings of that time. Note how the water flows calmly - although it serves as a monument today, it was once a force that powered the machines. And above you, on the bridge, stands a remnant or memorial in the place where the meat shop stood. This building was the heart of business: meat, vegetables were sold here, but there were also contracts, disputes and joys of a successful day. The bridge you see was not only carrying the burden of this building, but the entire weight of history - it was a bridge between the past and the present.

Who was meeting here? Unfortunately, the names of those who built the channel or operated the junk have not been preserved. But imagine how butchers, bakers, buyers from the surrounding villages walked on the bridge. How prices were negotiated, as promised, and contracts sealed. And if you look down into the water, you might even feel the atmosphere - moist, rustling water, the sounds of wood and metal. This was all part of everyday life, which was happening here.

And now it's time for something that makes this drive really special. It is one of the few preserved water channels of late Gothic origin in Bohemia! Most of these buildings have been destroyed or rebuilt, but here you can see what water technology looked like 500 years ago. It's like a window into the past - not only until walls or churches were built, but until people learned to control the power of water. And if you look downstream, you might realize that this channel was also a path - a path for goods, but also for messages that linked Pardubice to other cities.

Take another look before leaving. Notice how the water calmly flows between the rocks, how the bridge above the drive stands as a guardian of the past. This drive is not just a waterway - it's a story about human work, about the need for water and how it became something that brought the city together. If you have time, take a walk around the neighborhood and look for more clues of this history. You may find it interesting how crafts, business and everyday life have been mixed up here. And when you leave, take not only the memory of this channel, but the feeling that you have become part of Pardubice history for a while.

Thank you for taking the time to discover this memory. May the calm water of the drive continue to accompany you - let it inspire you to discover other hidden treasures of our heritage. Good trip!

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the imperial jet is in spring or summer, when nature is around the most beautiful and the water channel seems most impressive. These months are also the most pleasant weather for walking and observing technical details of the monument. It is recommended to leave in the morning or late afternoon when there are fewer tourists and light falls favourably on historical elements. The sunny days with mild ventilation are ideal for a day trip because the visit usually takes several hours.

You can get to the monument by car or public transport. Find out the current connection in the traffic search engine because the lines can change. It is recommended to come with sufficient time because walking from stops can take several minutes.

When visiting, wear comfortable shoes and suitable clothes, because walking on the drive and its surroundings requires uneven terrain. You can also bring a map or a mobile application with navigation to help you navigate around. If you're interested in history, you might even bring a notebook and a pencil to take notes. In spring or summer wear sunglasses and sunscreen because the sun can be intense.

Photography is allowed here, but the most beautiful pictures can be taken in sunny weather, when light is reflected from water and emphasizes historical stone elements. The best places for photos are the edge of the drive where you can see the overall structure of the water channel, and also the bridge which is part of the monument. It is recommended to photograph from different angles to capture both detailed parts and general view. A sunny afternoon with mild shadow is an ideal time for quality photos.

The historic centre of the Old Town of Pardubice is located in the vicinity of the imperial drive with the church of St. James, which is one of the most important monuments in the area. This church is from the late Middle Ages and offers visitors the opportunity to know the architecture of the time. If you have time, go to the nearby area where other interesting historical buildings and monuments are located. A tour of St. Jacob's Church is an ideal supplement to visit the drive, because both places are close to each other.

If you travel with children, the imperial drive offers an opportunity to walk and explore history. Children can see the old water channel and bridge, which is part of the monument while learning about technical solutions of the past. They are advised to explain how the drive worked and how important it was to the city. It may also be interesting for children to observe water and nature around the drive. The surrounding area is also located where children can relax and have fun.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring During spring, the imperial drive with a bridge offers a completely different view than in other parts of the year - the water spills again after the winter downturn and the surrounding meadows awaken to life. The bright afternoon, when the sun shines almost until evening, creates toys with glitter on the water surface and the shadows of the bridge are projected into calm waves. The first spring plants, such as ash or alder, are blooming around and the air is full of fresh rain breath. It is also specific that at this time the surroundings are still relatively quiet - tourists start to appear later, so the morning visit before 10 o'clock is ideal. I recommend shoes with good grip because after the rains the walkways can be wet, and light clothes that protect against cold morning winds. The best time is this afternoon, when the sun gets over the trees and lights the whole drive with golden light.

Summer In the main summer season, the imperial drive turns into a live scene full of motion and sounds - the water is reflected in the bright sun, and when the light breeze blows, small waves form on the surface. The surrounding trees and shrubs are full of greenery, and if you look carefully, you will also see various water birds like storks or ducks looking for food. The atmosphere is alive but still, because people often sit on benches along the way and enjoy walking. In summer, however, a higher number of visitors should be expected, especially in the afternoon, so I recommend that they arrive early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid crowds. Suitable is light but protective clothing - a sun hat and sunglasses because the reflection from the water can be strong. Don't forget enough water, because in the summer heat you are easily overheating.

Autumn Autumn brings a breathtaking palette of colors to the landscape around the imperial drive - the leaves of the trees turn from dark green to yellow, orange and red, and their reflections are projected into the water. The air is cleaner and colder, and when the sun boils down, it creates long shadows that give the landscape a mysterious character. At this time, the surroundings are calmer than in the summer, but it is still good to come at a time when light is not yet too weak - ideal is the afternoon between the thirteenth and sixteenth hours. I recommend warmer clothes because evenings can be cold, and comfortable shoes because fallen leaves can be slippery. If you go for a walk, take the camera - autumn light and water reflections create unique photos.

Winter Winter imperial drive is like a fairy tale - the water under the bridge often freezes, and when it is allowed, beautiful patterns are created on ice plates. The surrounding trees are bare, but their silhouettes against the snow-white landscape seem elegant. The light in winter is shorter and therefore it is best to visit the memory of the afternoon when the sun still shines long enough. At this time the surroundings are almost barren, so you can enjoy quiet walks without crowds. I recommend warm but comfortable clothes - gloves, scarves and shoes with good grip, because the roads can be frozen. If you choose to visit in winter, remember that some parts of the neighborhood may be less accessible due to snow and therefore it is good to have a mobile phone for possible orientation.
