Dělnický dům Workers' house

The Workers' House in Šternberk stands at the corner of Masarykova and Krampolova streets. Its construction began in 1895, at a time when the workers' movement was emerging. The building became a base for workers who fought for better working conditions. It was completed in 1900 as a workers' house of social democracy.

The construction was preceded by the establishment of an association that organized fundraising for workers' houses. Thanks to its activities, workers' houses can be found throughout Czechia today. In Šternberk, this was not the first such building; several had existed there before it. It served to house workers and for meetings and cultural events. On the south side there was a caretaker's apartment, an office for the factory kitchen, and three club rooms. On the north side was a large hall measuring 25 by 14 meters with a stage. On the first floor there were two larger club rooms, a projection booth, and an office for the club manager. In 1945, dining halls and a factory kitchen were added to the hall.

The building is single-story and corner-situated, with striking decoration. Its dominant feature is a corner oriel window. The facades are adorned with historicizing stucco details and risalits. The more elaborate risalit on the south side has a blind stucco portal with a cartouche flanked on both sides by festoons. The cartouche bears the date 1900. The building has 25 windows with prominent wooden frames. Windows on the floor are complemented by window pediments of triangular or arched shape. The windows are grouped in pairs, with the exception of the oriel window and the central window. The gabled roof is crowned with a pyramid topped by a decorative window.

Beneath the oriel window is a bronze memorial plaque. It commemorates that this is a former Workers' House of German social democracy from the period before the First World War.

The building also includes a spacious hall that forms a separate narrower wing towards Krampolova street. However, this has been completely modernly renovated. Only the corner section with original facades has been monument-protected since May 3, 1958.

In 1947, the building became the main headquarters of the Chronotechna company, which later sold it. Today it belongs to the city of Šternberk. It houses a cultural center, library, offices, and a restaurant. The building was last renovated in 2015.
