Dietrichsteinský palác (Brno) Palác

Dietrichsteinský Palác stands as a prominent cultural monument in Brno-město, located at Zelné náměstí. It serves as the main exhibition building for the Moravian Museum. Originally constructed between 1614 and 1618 by Cardinal František z Ditrichštejna, it was transformed into its Baroque form in the early 18th century under Domenico Martinelli. This palác is notable not only for its architectural evolution but also for hosting significant historical figures such as King Frederick of the Palatinate and Empress Maria Theresa.

The Dietrichsteinský Palác originated during a period marked by religious and political upheaval in Bohemia, leading up to the Thirty Years' War. Cardinal František z Ditrichštejna commissioned its construction between 1614 and 1618 as one of his family's residences. Although it was initially presumed that Italian-Swiss architect Giovanni Giacomo Tencalla designed the plans, this is now considered unlikely.

Architecturally, the palác began as a Renaissance structure but underwent significant Baroque renovations under Domenico Martinelli in the early 18th century. The transformation preserved its main walls and some vaults, with Martinelli's work particularly evident in the impressive entrance portal and vestibule. In later years, specifically during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, the building served judicial purposes before being acquired by the Moravian Museum in 1911. A major restoration in the 1980s restored its exterior to its original Baroque style while adapting the interior for modern museum use.

Ownership of the palác transitioned from Cardinal František z Ditrichštejna to the Moravské zemské muzeum, which has managed it since 1911. Throughout its history, the building played host to several notable figures and events. In 1620, during the Bohemian Revolt, King Frederick of the Palatinate stayed at the palác. Empress Maria Theresa visited in 1748, and Russian General Mikhail Kutuzov used it as a base before the Battle of Austerlitz in 1805.

Today, Dietrichsteinský Palác is renowned for its diverse exhibitions that span paleontology, mineralogy, prehistory, early medieval history, and more. The ground floor features a children's museum with interactive exhibits, while the first floor houses displays on paleontology and mineralogy. The second floor offers insights into Moravia's prehistoric and medieval past, and the third floor accommodates temporary exhibitions.
