Dům čp. 14 is a walled ground-floor building from the middle of the 19th century. Located in the southeast part of the square in Štramberk in the district of Nový Jicin. The building is listed in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic and forms part of the town monument reservation.

Historical records of this place date back to 1614, when Václav Kovář was the owner. Other owners are documented in a grunt book from 1676 and 1749. Since 1771, the township Ignac Baar has been based here. Originally there was a grafted house that burned down in 1855 in a city fire. Subsequently, the construction was rebuilt into the current masonry.

The building is oriented by the shield facade into the square. He's standing on a low suspicion that balances the slope. The ground floor of the facade is three-axis, separated by a cordon ledge and equipped with rectangular windows with chabras. The two-axis shield breaks the lizen frames and is supplemented by stucco ornaments in the lower corners and around the round window at the top. The windows in the shield have parapets and chabrac champagne. The whole building is closed by a metal saddle roof.

Since 1889 the house was owned by Ferdinand Raška and his descendants who remained there until the 1990s. Currently the owner is LOTEKS, s. r. o. from Kopřivnice.

Dům čp. 14 represents an authentic example of historical reconstruction after the devastating fire of the 19th century. It is a valuable addition to the architecture of the Štramberg Square and reminds of the conversion of local buildings from grafted houses to wall buildings. When visiting the city it is worth paying attention as part of the historical core of the village.

Welcome to the beautiful Štramberk. Right now, you're standing in front of the house with the number 14, which stands in the southeast part of the local square. If you look at it, you'll see a brick ground structure with a classic saddle roof that naturally fits together. It's a place that, at first glance, seems calm and steady, but its history is much more dynamic than you could imagine. Stop for a moment and feel the atmosphere of this corner of the city, which is now a protected part of the city conservation.

Now let's look deeper into the past together to understand how this form of the building happened. Historical records introduce us until the year six hundred fourteen, when a certain Václav Kovář is listed as the owner of this place. Imagine what this place looked like in the seventeenth century. At that time, there was not a brick building that you see today, but there was a garbled house. Wooden buildings were common at the time, but they were at great risk. This is also demonstrated by the records of the year six hundred seventy-six, which carefully registered the owners in the grunt book.

If we move forward in time, to the year seven hundred seventy-one, we can imagine that Ignac Baar was based in these walls, who was at that time a member of the city. It is fascinating to think that this place served as a meeting place for people, where the fate of the locals intermingles with a cup of beer or wine. But a key break in the form of a house came in the middle of the nineteenth century. In the year eight hundred and fifty-five, a devastating fire broke through the city. It was at that time that the original blasphemous house burned down. That was the moment when it was decided that the new building would be marveled to be safer and more fire-resistant. Around the year, eight hundred and fifty-five so formed a building in the form you see before you. Later, in the year eight hundred and eighty-nine, the house was owned by Ferdinand Raška and his descendants who kept it for generations to come.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself and look carefully at the details that are right in front of you. Note the shield facade above all. It's the dominant element of a house that gives it character. Look at the lizen frames, which are the vertical protruding passports on the facade that optically divide the wall and give it a rhythm. This is accompanied by fine stucco ornaments, which are proof of the craftsmanship of the 19th century builders. Although we do not know exactly who was the architect of this building, it is clear that he wanted to create something elegant and representative.

When you go around the house or look at it from the side, notice one very practical detail. The building stands on low suspicion. Why is that? It's because Štramberk is a city of hills and slopes. This suspect serves to balance the slope terrain so that the house can stand straight even in naturally oblique landscape. It's a stealth but important technical element that shows how people have adapted to nature in the past.

The contrast between the wooden past and the stone presence is interesting. It's a story about rebirth from ashes. Imagine the noise and chaos of the year, eight hundred and fifty-five, when the flames swallowed up the wooden walls, and then the slow process of building the new walls that stand here today. This house is not just an ordinary building, it is a monument to survival and stability, which is today registered in the Central List of Cultural Monuments of the Czech Republic.

Now that you know the story of house number fourteen, I suggest you observe it quietly for a while. Feel how the lizen frames and stucco details shine in daylight and how the building sits firmly on its suspect in this mountainous terrain. He is a silent witness to the centuries of Štramberk history, from Václav Kovář to Bosnian Baar to the family of Rašek.

This concludes the stop at this house. I hope you enjoyed this brief insight into history. Now I invite you to continue to explore other beautiful corners of Štramberk and discover other secrets of this picturesque city. I wish you a pleasant walk and a wonderful experience on your next discovery. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is morning or late afternoon time when the sun hits the southeast side of the square and highlights the details of the masonry facade and saddle roof. The construction is available by car and public transport; Check the current connection in the search engine.

For the tour we recommend to wear comfortable shoes suitable for walking through the historical centre. As it is a residential building, we recommend that we be considerate to the inhabitants when taking pictures.

For the best photos we recommend you search the angle from the opposite side of the square to capture the building in the context of the surrounding building. The best light to capture the texture of the walls is within the golden hour.

Families with children can use a visit to tell about how construction materials were changed in the nineteenth century, such as the transition from grafted houses to brick buildings.

Walk within the monument

1. Dům čp. 14 - Main building. A place where you can admire historical architecture and unique details of the building. 2. Tanks - Outdoor space. Ideal place for a short rest and a view of the surrounding masonry. 3. Interior spaces - Internal parts of the house. Places that reveal the way of life in the past.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring, the surroundings are waking up and the colors are getting fresh. Light is soft in this period, which is ideal for observing the details of the building without sharp shadows. I recommend you take your clothes in several layers because the morning cold can quickly take turns with heat. The best time to visit is in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

In the summer months the atmosphere is warm and the surrounding green is in full bloom. The sun shines strongly and the days are very long. In the main summer season there are more people in the town, so it is advisable to choose late afternoon hours for a quieter observation. It is advisable to wear light summer clothes and not forget the sun protection.

Autumn brings peace to Štramberka and colors of gold or red. Morning fog often covers buildings and creates a mysterious mood. It's good to have a warmer jacket and shoes ready for wet pavement. It is best to come at a time when the sun is falling to the horizon, because the colours of the leaves and the house are the most striking.

Winter covers the city in silence and often in white snow. The light is weak in this period and the days are short, which gives the surroundings a fabulous look. It is necessary to wear very warm clothes, including gloves and hats. The best time for a tour is around noon, when daylight is the most intense.
