The chapel of Saint Elizabeth in Water Street in Uherské Hradiště represents the oldest preserved church building in the city. This Gothic monument from the beginning of the 15th century was built near the city hospital in close proximity to the walls. Today the building serves as a pharmacy and is registered as a real-estate cultural monument. It represents a unique example of the adaptation of sacral space for modern medical purposes.

The chapel was part of the city hospital. The oldest history of the building was left few messages, but it can be assumed that the original construction was wooden and easily flammable. A five-leaf rose is carved on the vault of the presbytery, a sign of probable founders, masters of Moravan. It is supplemented by the name Kusna, referring to a townsman who was involved in the construction.

It is an architectural Gothic building with a polygonal presbytery that has undergone many modifications. In the interior, the presbytery separates the portal with a broken arch from the entrance room; the space is covered by a cross arch with stone ribs. The entrance room is finished with a mirror vault and decorated with stucco, which interprets the Roman arcade with Doric Pilasters. The northwest facade to the Water Street bears the signs of eclectic historism, obtained after modifications in 1849. The middle part is lined by pilasters with elements of the Ionian Order and over the portal is an ellipse window. The southeast facade, visible from the atrium, reveals the original Gothic presbytery with a support system. The construction is tilting south, which is likely causing the city's soft subsoil.

The history of the building was closely linked to the fate of the city. In 1582 the hospital was almost abandoned, but already in 1610 the chapel was repaired for religious purposes. The city fire in 1643 requested an early Baroque reconstruction, which is evidenced by 1656 on the portal in the side entrance. Another static damage appears to have caused the explosion of the nearby dusty Red Tower in 1695. This led to the tearing down of the old hospital and the construction of a new Baroque building. After the fire in 1849, they added side tracks to the chapel and united the entrance facade. Between 1856 and 1923, the hospital served as a public hospital.

In the 20th century, the chapel changed its purpose. Between 1904 and 1918, they used it as a butcher's shop and a sausage shop, shortly after 1910 as a table shop. In 1965, the chapel was definitively abolished and its premises began to serve as a warehouse of the Object cooperative. After the decaying period in the 1980s, the whole complex underwent a major reconstruction in the 1990s. Since October 1998, Lucie pharmacy has been operating in the premises of the former chapel, while the rest of the premises serve as a medical facility with offices.

Dům svaté Alžběty s kaplí is a valuable witness to the transformation of urban buildings and the ability of historical objects to adapt to modern times. Visiting this place offers the possibility of viewing the history of Uherský Hradiště through preserved Gothic elements in contrast to later modifications. The building is freely accessible within the operating hours of the pharmacy.

Architectural development

The original Gothic building was baroque in the 17th century, which is evidenced by the year 1656 on the portal. In 1849, the chapel acquired a new facade in the spirit of eclectic historicism and was extended by lateral tracts. In the 1990s, a major regeneration of the building took place today.

Historical events

The city fire in 1643 led to an early Baroque reconstruction of the chapel. In 1849, after another fire, there was a major modification of the facade and extension of the side tracks. A pharmacy was opened in 1998 after the reconstruction in the chapel.

Welcome to this historic place in the heart of Uherské Hradiště! Under your feet lies the Water Street and before you stands the unique house of Saint Elizabeth with chapel. This object, which you will notice with its imagination between the modern city, is the oldest preserved church building in the city. His first impression is simple and yet full of history.

Let's look at its origin and historical context. The chapel of Saint Elizabeth was built in the early 15th century as a Gothic building in the class of city walls and hospitals. Its location here was not random, but related to the need to provide spiritual sanctuary for local residents and passengers.

The architecture of the chapel is fascinating. Look up and notice her clamp, on which is carved a five-leaf rose - the sign of the masters of Moravan. This detail reminds us of the name of the townsman Kusny who was involved in the construction. Although we are unable to identify the architect, it is clear that the chapel was designed with care and art.

Let's dive into the key stories associated with this monument. In 1610 the chapel was repaired and refurnished for worship, which shows its spiritual importance. Subsequently, in 1656, there was an early Baroque reconstruction, which added new elements and changed its appearance. After the fire in 1849, the facade was united in the spirit of historism, which added another layer of history to the chapel.

What's interesting is the fact that the building is leaning south. This angle can be seen as a symbolic or simply a result of age and changes in the field. Which reminds us how time affects even solid stones.

In 1904 the chapel started to be used for commercial purposes, which shows its adaptability and durability. Until 1998, she served as a pharmacy, passing from the spiritual centre to part of the daily life of the city.

Let's finish our tour by inviting you to explore further the Uherské Hradiště. This chapel is just one of the many historical gems the city offers. We hope your visiting day was full of discovering and learning new things.

Thank you for your attentive listening and I wish you the rest of the day. Let the history of Uherské Hradiště continue to amuse you!

Tips for visitors

To visit the chapel of St. Elizabeth, I recommend the morning hours, when the sunlight illuminates the Gothic elements of the building beautifully and the historic centre still has a quiet atmosphere. Take with you comfortable shoes for walking on historic tiles and camera, with the best exterior images taken from the Voda street, where historical architecture will stand out in contrast to the surrounding building. In the immediate vicinity of the monument you can visit the historical city centre, walk close to the river Moravia or go to the Slovakian Museum, which is only a short walk away from the chapel. For families with children, the location is ideal thanks to the proximity of quiet zones near the river, where children can relax after a tour of historical monuments.
