Hotel Evropa, located on Wenceslas Square in Prague 1, is a prestigious cultural monument of the Czech Republic. This building, originally built as a neo-Renaissance building in 1872, was later rebuilt into Art Nouveau style and became a symbol of luxury and modernity in its time. Thanks to its history, architecture and cultural events, the hotel Europe is an important monument not only for Prague, but also for the whole of Europe.

The establishment of the hotel dates back to 1872 when the hotel Wilhelm Hauner built it. The original building was designed by architect Josef Schulz in a neo-Renaissance style. In 1889 the hotel was renamed "Hotel U Archduke Stephen." The key moment in the history of the building was its reconstruction between 1904 and 1905, when architects Bedřich Bendelmayer, Alois Dryák, Bohumil Hypšman and Jan Letzel converted the object into a geometric Art Nouveau style. This transformation not only changed the appearance of the building, but also increased its prestige.

Architecturally, Hotel Europe is a five-storey building with a sixth floor in the attic and a Mansard roof. Its symmetrical Art Nouveau facade is decorated with rich frames of plant motifs, especially on a semi-circular shield with a mosaic inscription "HOTEL." On top of the shield is a statue of three whitelighter women by Ladislav Šaloun, symbolizing Europe in the world. These decorative elements contribute to the unique appearance of the building and its status as cultural monuments.

The history of the hotel is also recorded by changes in owners and dramatic events. After the purchase by Karel Šroubek in 1924, the hotel became one of the most famous in Europe. In 1951 he was nationalized and renamed Grandhotel Europe, leading to his gradual decline. After 1989 the hotel was restituted and began to develop again. In 2016 it was purchased by Prague Prime Home Management, which started reconstruction. Today's owner is Ferid Nasr, under whose management the hotel was reopened in 2024 as a luxury five-star hotel brand W Hotels Worldwide.

Hotel Evropa was the site of several key events and hosted significant personalities. In 1912 there was only one author's reading of Franz Kafka in Prague. Earlier, before World War II, the hotel was housed by British broker Nicholas Winton, who led the Jewish children's rescue from Nazism. These events highlight the importance of the hotel not only as luxury accommodation, but also as sites of historical and cultural relevance.

Today, the hotel Europe is reopened to the public and offers modern services within a luxury five-star facility. Its historical architecture, combined with modern comfort, makes it an attractive destination for tourists and guests looking for unique experiences in Prague. Visiting the hotel Europe offers not only a view of beautiful Art Nouveau architecture but also an opportunity to appreciate the rich history and cultural heritage of this important place.

Welcome to Wenceslas Square in the heart of Prague, where one of the most majestic buildings in the city - Hotel Evropa is situated. This prestigious object, which stands as a testament to rich history and architectural art, awaits you with both smile and mystery. Look up at his facade, where the geometrical Art Nouveau style speaks of elegance and modern ambitions of the end of the 19th century.

Let's dive into the history of this place. In 1872 there was built a building in the Neo-Renaissance style, which served as the business home of Wilhelm Hauner. But changing times also brought changes in the function and appearance of the object. In 1904, the reconstruction process was initiated by architects Bedřich Bendelmayer, Alois Dryák, Bohumil Hypšman and others. Their goal was to transform the building into one of the most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings in Prague.

Now pay attention to the architecture you see around you. The facade is revived by rich decorations and sculptures that are characteristic of the Art Nouveau style of the time. These elements may remind you of the complexity and creativity of the artists back then. Note also the details obtained during the reconstruction, which took place until 2024, thus reopening the building in its original gloss.

Hotel Evropa is not only an architectural pearl, but also a place full of historical stories. Here was the author's reading of Franz Kafka in 1912, which means that this building witnessed a meeting of great personalities and history. Karel Šroubek, a well-known photographer and film director, as well as other prominent figures, had their fates attached to this monument.

The interesting thing is that although the building was nationalized in 1951 and faced various historical changes, it retained its spiritual essence. It's a place where the past meets the present, which can be seen in the atmosphere of the hotel.

By inviting you to further explore this historical monument and its local legends, I bid you farewell. Look around you, blind yourself to elegance and pay attention to the silent stories this place holds. And whenever you want to visit Hotel Evropa again, we know that it will be waiting for you here as fully and beautifully as it is today.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is spring or autumn, when fine light best highlights rich Art Nouveau details of the facade. The building looks noble all year round.

When photographing, focus on rich decorating the building from the outside. The most striking light for images is usually in the morning or late afternoon hours.

The Wenceslas Square is close by, which is an ideal place for a walk with children in the heart of Prague.

With us we recommend taking a camera to capture architecture and comfortable shoes to walk around.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring the surrounding area wakes up and the air is fresh thanks to blooming plants. The light is fine in this period, which allows you to observe beautifully the details of the building without sharp shadows. It is advisable to prepare layered clothes because the morning cold can still be felt. The best time to visit is in the morning when the streets are quieter than in other times.

Summer: Summer season is typical of strong sun and long days that give place great strength. The mood is alive and full of colors. I recommend wearing light and airy clothes and not forgetting to protect against sunlight. For the best experiences, reserve a visit early in the morning or late in the afternoon to avoid the greatest heat and the largest number of people.

Autumn: Autumn brings a memorial mood to Prague streets, complemented by golden leaves and occasional morning fog. The light is low at this time and creates interesting depths on the walls. It is necessary to carry warmer layers such as a coat or scarf. The best is to visit a place in the afternoon when the sun best highlights the colors of the surroundings.

Winter: Winter months offer a calm and mysterious mood, especially when the air is freezing and the days are short. Light is weak and cold in this period, which creates a noble impression. It is necessary to wear strong clothes, including caps and gloves, to protect against cold. It is best to take advantage of the clear lunchtime when the lights are the most.
