Hrochův hrádek is a ruins of a fortress built on the site of the early medieval fort on the eastern edge of Dobrá Voda near Březnice in the district of Příbram. The construction is probably from the end of the 14th century and since 1965 it has been protected as a cultural monument. It is important in its layered history, ranging from prehistoric to late Middle Ages.

The locality was settled already in the 6th and 5th centuries B.C. at the turn of the period of Halštat and Latín. Later, in the 10th to 13th centuries, the early medieval fort worked. This was probably related to Bozeň's imaginary administrative castle at Pochapel and could serve as the seat of a high-ranking official. The fortress itself was created at the end of the 14th century in connection with the development of small noble settlements in Czech countries.

The original fort surrounded a wall closing the area of about 1.1 hectares. On the easily accessible east side it reaches a height of up to three metres and is protected by an external ditch. Val was later damaged by the construction of the railway line Zdice- Antivine. From the fort, the only preserved object is the northern part of the donjon, which stands up to the height of the third floor. Individual floor levels separated flat beam ceilings. The ground floor and the first floor were divided by partitions into two rooms with shooting windows. The room on the second floor was illuminated by a window with a seat, and there was a front door. On the third floor, the fireplace console was preserved.

The first written mention of the building dates back to 1475, when Václav ze Švamberka sold it as desolate. Around the end of the 15th century the mansion became owner of Bohuslav z Němčic and subsequently Jan z Pruku. In 1543, the sale of the fort, including the sailing court, was mentioned by Zdeslav Ojíří from Okechědice. The 1574 record states that the construction was again desolate.

The ruin stands on a small sharpness above the Skalice River at an altitude of 455 metres. It is located in close proximity to the railway line on the eastern edge of the village and is freely accessible.

Hrochův hrádek is a valuable document for the development of fortified settlements in this area. A visit to the ruins offers the opportunity to see the remains of medieval architecture in natural terrain.

Welcome to Hippo Castle. You've just stopped at a place that carries the cramped energy of the millennium and the silent voice of ancient generations. You're standing in front of a ruin that, even though it now acts as a silent witness to the past, has been the key point in this country for centuries. Look around you and feel this atmosphere. You are on the eastern edge of Good Water near Březnice, where nature gradually begins to take over the work of human hands. Even though you see mostly stone remains and built-up fragments of history today, try to imagine how this place used to work when it was the heart of the surrounding settlement.

To understand why this place is so special, we need to go far into the past, far beyond what it might seem at first glance. This site is not just a medieval monument. Its roots go back to when the world had just formed. Already in the sixth and fifth century BC, in the period of Halštate and Latin culture, people have already inhabited these slopes. Imagine the first communities to choose this very strategic place. Later, between the tenth and third centuries, there was a significant early medieval fort. This site has been used continuously for centuries, indicating its irreplaceable location. The fortress itself, the ruins of which you are now observing, was probably created only at the end of the fourteenth century, when the need for a firmer defense seat became a necessity.

Now pay attention to what's right in front of you. Even if you look at the ruins today, try to draw the original scope of this place in your mind. The original fort was surrounded by a massive valley covering an area of approximately one whole hectare and eleven pieces of 100 metres. Feel how the terrain adapted to the needs of the people at that time and how this wall had to create an impenetrable barrier for enemies in the past. When you look at the remaining stone structures, you realize that every stone you see was once part of a solid system to protect lives and property. Although the architecture of this place remains unknown in many ways today, its malleability still tells us the story of an effort for stability and security in unstable times.

The history of this place is also a story of people whose names are written in chronicles in connection with the possession of this fortress. The fate of Hippo's castle was linked to various powerful genealogies. In 1475 the name of Václav from Švamberk appeared in documents, which sold this fort as desolate. This is a fascinating moment which tells us that at that time the importance of this place began to fade and the buildings were probably not inhabited. Later, in 1543, the fortress, including its sailing court, became the property of Zdeslav Ojíra of Okechédíc. In history there are also other figures such as Bohuslav z Němčic or Jan z Pruku who had to have close links with this place. The fate of this fortress was fluctuating - in 1574 it was again referred to as desolate, suggesting that its era as a living place was long gone. It was only in 1965 that this building was declared a cultural monument, thereby ensuring its protection for future generations, including you.

The interesting thing that might interest you is the question of who were the people who lived here in the early Middle Ages? There is a theory that gives this place another mystery. It is assumed that this early medieval castle could serve as the seat of a high-ranking official who was closely connected to Bozen Castle. Who was that? What role did he play in the administration system at the time? This ambiguity creates a fascinating load of mysteries around Hippo's castle that the historians try to decipher. It is this invisible layer of stories that makes every stone in this ruin something more than a pile of rubble.

Now I won't slow you down any longer. I suggest you continue your walk and see the surrounding landscape, which was as important to the people at the time as the fortress itself. Look at the rest of the area, feel the silence and just let yourself drift through the atmosphere of this historic place. Thank you for choosing to visit Hrochův hrádek and devote part of your time to its history. We wish you a pleasant journey.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit Hippo's castle is during the summer period, especially in the spring and autumn flowering, when nature receives the most beautiful shades. This time of the year also offers lighter weather for long walks and monitoring historical ruins.

Transport to Hiphov Castle can be carried out by car or public transport, with specific connections and routes to be verified in the current route search engine.

When planning a visit, wear a suitable suit, because the climate in mountain terrain can be quickly variable. It is also recommended to bring drinking shoes designed for walking on uneven paths and pocket light if you plan to stay on site until late hours.

The best place to photograph Hippo Castle is from the north side, where panoramic view of the surrounding landscape opens. The best light offers morning and evening hours when the sun illuminates ruins in mild light, which is ideal for capturing details.

In the vicinity of Hiphov Castle there is a River Skalice, which can be visited for short picnics or relaxation. It is also possible to explore the village of Dobrá Voda near Březnice and its surroundings where you can find picturesque roads and natural parks suitable for families with children.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring brings about the awakening of nature, when the ruins wrap themselves with fresh greenery and the surrounding trees bloom. The atmosphere is full of vitality and the light is fine, which highlights the details of stone walls. I recommend waterproof shoes for wet roads and a lighter wind jacket. The best thing is to visit the place in the morning before the first temperature fluctuations start.

In the summer months, the ruins are dominated by thick crowns of trees and intense sun, which creates sharp shadows in the corners of the walls. It's the time of high attendance, so come first thing in the morning to avoid crowds. Don't forget your headgear, sun protection, and plenty of fluids in your travel bag.

Autumn colors the surroundings in golden and red tones, which in combination with the grey stone creates a melancholy and romantic mood. The frequent fog gives the place mystery and peace. Suitable is layered clothing and a visit in late afternoon hours when the light is the most golden. Be careful on slippery leaves on the trails.

Zimą works most sober Hrochův hrádek because without leaves you can fully see all architectural details of the ruins. Snow can cover the stones and create a quiet, freezing landscape with high contrast. Dress very warm, vłącznie with thermoplay and quality shoes. Due to a shorter day and limited opening time, plan to arrive around noon.
