Hukvaldy represents a protected cultural monument in the village of the same name in the district of Frýdek-Místek in the Moravian-Silesian Region. Their beginnings are immersed in uncertainty - long speculated on the origin between 1228 and 1285. However, the influential historical research has clearly shown that the castle did not exist in 1234 when Arnold z Hückeswagenu appeared in the documents. While Arnold was the Reich earl with material influence in Moravia (for example, in 1240 he won the castle Jicin), he wrote according to his home residence Hückeswagen in Rhineland, not according to Hukvald.

The actual creation of the castle is linked to 1256. The then Bishop of Olomouc Bruno ze Schauenburku won the entire territory between Hranice, Ostrava, Beskydes and Odra this year. He kept half, lent the other half to Frank from Hückeswagen, the son of Arnold. Frank chose the cutlery as his seat. Sometime between 1260 and 1270, after the loss of the castle Jicin, Frank built Hukenswald as a replacement. The new name was supposed to remind them of their original family property, Hückeswagen, from which Frank and his son Jindřich were removed on September 11, 1260. The first written mention of Hukwald Castle itself dates back to 1285.

The following four centuries have brought in frequent currency owners. In 1316 it was taken over by Olomouc canaries Děch and Jindřech of Fulštejn, bought five years later by Jindřich of Kytlice. The turning year was 1359 when Jan Očko z Vlašimi bought it and then donated it to the Olomouc bishops. This gift was also supported by Emperor Karel IV., making the bishop the owner of the final. Ten municipalities - Kozlovice, Tichá, Nová Tichá, part of Dášice, Manská Sedlnice, Sklavov, Petrovice (now extinct), Trnávka, Chlebovice, Methylovice and the town of Příbor fell under the Hukvald estate.

At the beginning of the 15th century, the castle was part of margrave wars and conflicts between various power forces. In 1389 Mikuláš z Rýzmburk stopped him from Jošt z Volfsberk, a year later Jakub Ščeneti z Belin. After 1400 he fell under the control of Emperor Zikmund of Luxembourg. During the Hussite wars, he was attacked by two enemy forces. In 1428 it was then John XII. Iron stopped Prince Bolk of Falkenberg. The castle was gradually pushed into the marginal role of international power drag in the region.

Today, Hukvaldy stands as a ruin, which retains a memory of the turbulent history of North Moravia and complex relations between local nobility, bishop property and the royal power of the late Middle Ages.

Welcome to the place where time stopped and where stone remains of castle Hukvaldy are trying to tell stories of its ancient glory. You are standing in front of one of the most important historical ruins in this region. Look around you and feel the atmosphere. The castle hill on which you are located is situated above the village and offers you a view of the vast area, which once represented an impervious fortress. Even though you see the fragments of stone today and the ruins that have been built, try to imagine the monumental nature that this place radiated at the time of its greatest power. Feel the calm that exists here, and let yourself be consumed by the feeling that you are walking through centuries.

Let us now return together deep into the past to understand why this castle was created. Imagine the second half of the 13th century. At this time, the first trees began to cut down and mine the stone. The founder of this fort was Frank z Hückeswagenu. However, the reason for the construction was not only an effort for a new building, but above all a necessity. The Lords of Příbor lost their previous castle Jicin and needed a replacement that was just as strong and strategically important. That is why this elevated position on the Hrad Hill was chosen. The first written mention of the castle, which allows us to document these events today, dates back to 1285. Since then the castle Hukvaldy has become an integral part of this landscape and over time its importance has been deepened.

Now pay attention to what's right in front of you. Even if you look at a vast ruin that no longer has its original roofs or entire walls, you can still feel its original scope and importance in it. See how the castle area has adapted to the rugged terrain of this hill. Feel the stone remains intertwining with nature. Although there are no tall towers or decorative dome that you could easily identify today, the very structure of these remains will tell you the size of this place. Notice how the entire complex is naturally surrounded by a protected branch. This field is not only an aesthetic accessory, but it is an integral part of the complex and gives this place a sense of isolation and grandeur. This natural barrier around the castle used to be used to protect and today it creates beautiful sets for these historical ruins.

But the history of this place is much more than just a story of stone and soil. It is the story of the people who have decided the fate of the entire regions. The castle Hukvaldy was not just an ordinary residence, it was a political centre that witnessed many clashes and pledges. One of the most important moments in the history of the castle was 1359. This year the castle was redeemed by Jan Očko z Vlašimi, a character whose name was rescinded throughout the country at the time. Jan Očko donated the castle to Olomouc bishops, and this act was not just a simple transfer of property. The whole process was supported by Emperor Charles himself, the fourth, which gave the castle incredible weight and prestige. Since then, the castle has become the permanent property of the Olomouc bishop and served as a significant seat of their power.

There were people in these walls whose names now excite every history lover. You can imagine Arnold and Frank from Hückeswagen laying the foundations of this fortress. You can imagine Bruno from Schauenburg or Jan Volk leaving a trail. The castle witnessed both power and political scheming, which accompanied the government of Zikmund of Luxembourg. Every stone you see now could have witnessed the actions of these prominent personalities. The castle was not just a military base, it was a place where church power clashed with political ambition.

But there is also a shadow aspect of this history that makes us think about the fleeting of everything that people are building. Even this strong fortress had to face fateful moments. One of the most devastating events was 1762. This year, the castle was hit by a significant fire. Imagine the flames that spread over these designs and which gradually changed the face of this historical monument. This fire was one of the factors that contributed to the castle gradually turning into a ruin as you know it today. There is a mystery as to how such a strategic and powerful point has become this silent witness to the past, which today forces us to think about how quickly history can change.

Now I won't hold you any longer. Continue your journey and explore every corner of this place. Look at the remains of the castle walls, feel the atmosphere of the Castle Hill and let yourself be carried away by the beauty of the surrounding field. Every step can lead you to a new insight and a new idea of how it used to be. Thank you for visiting Hukvaldy and for trying with us this short trip to the past. We wish you a pleasant walk among historical monuments.

For kids

This huge broken castle is one of the biggest in Moravia! And around it is a giant corral in the woods, where there are taxpayers who look like deer with antlers. The famous composer Leoš Janáček was born in the substation. He wrote an opera about a clever fox, the Scarecrow, and you'll find a bronze statue on it. You can pet her for luck!

Seasonal recommendations

In spring, the castle ruins are awakened along with the surrounding vegetation. The light is fine in this period and the colors are starting to feel fresh thanks to the first leaves and blooming flowers. The atmosphere is calm and full of new energy. We recommend you take layered clothes because the weather can change quickly, and don't forget the fixed shoes because of the damp terrain. It's best to arrive in the morning.

In the summer months the castle is surrounded by dense greenery and the sun highlights every stone structure of the ruins. The days are long and the views of the landscape are best due to clear weather. Due to the increased attendance in the main summer season, it is advisable to arrive early in the morning to enjoy the peace. Don't forget the sun hat, enough water and comfortable shoes to walk between the ruins.

Autumn brings melancholy beauty and golden shades of leaves to the region, which perfectly complement the atmosphere of old castle walls. The morning fog in the valleys creates a mysterious and romantic environment. It is advisable to have a windbreaker and a warmer layer with you because it can be cold in the forest area. The best time to observe the colors is in the morning when the sun shines through the trees.

The winter season turns the castle into a quiet and freezing place where snow and frost highlight the silhouette of ruins. The light is cold and sharp, which gives the memory a dramatic look. It is necessary to dress thoroughly in heat clothing and choose shoes with good grip due to demanding and slippery terrain. Due to short days, plan a visit around noon to use the maximum amount of daylight.
