Janáčkovo divadlo in Brno is an important theatre building in Roosevelt Street, opened on 2nd October 1965. The building is part of the National Theatre Brno and represents a representative construction of the 1960s. It serves mainly for opera and ballet performances, concerts of Philharmonic Brno and festival Moravian autumn.

The efforts to build a new theatre scene in Brno date back to the beginning of the 20th century. The first proposals arose between 1907 and 1910. Seven architectural competitions took place over the next few decades. They were attended by a number of important creators such as Bohuslav Fuchs, Josef Gočár, Vlastislav Hofman, Josef Chochola, Pavel Janák, Jan Kotěra, Emil Králík, Otakar Novotný or Oldřich Starý. In 1936, Bohuslav Fuchs introduced its non-competitive futuristic project. The architect Jan Víšek won the short competition in 1940, whose design was confirmed for implementation in 1958. The construction itself took place between 1961 and 1965.

The architectural solution of the building in Koliště Park uses a metal concrete monolithic skeleton with a filling wall. The auditorium and the stage are covered with steel ties. The technical background includes a stage with a turnaround, followed by two side and one rear stage. Quality materials, namely granite, black syenite, limestone, glass, aluminium and wood lining made of elm and nut, were used in construction and modifications. The original capacity of the auditorium, designed as a tiered amphitheatre with a wreath of boxes, was 1 383 spectators. After subsequent reconstruction, it was reduced to 1,063 seats. In the first basement under the lobby there is a restaurant, cafe and club of artists.

A major reconstruction started in 2007. It focused on the modernisation of the unsatisfactory auditorium and the reclamation of the surrounding building including the construction of underground parking. For these modifications, designed by architect Jaroslav Černou, the city of Brno set aside 111 million crowns.

Today Janáčkovo divadlo is a fully functional cultural institution. Thanks to the large hall and technical equipment it is a key space for the Brno opera and ballet. Visiting this monument offers the opportunity to become acquainted with the representative architecture of the 1960s, while taking advantage of a rich range of performances in the premises that have undergone modernization for the needs of contemporary theatre operation.

Welcome to the heart of Brno. You are standing right on Roosevelt Street, in a place that is absolutely crucial to our city, and right in front of your eyes is one of the most important cultural buildings in Moravia. Janáčkovo divadlo. Feel this atmosphere, feel the feeling that right now you're moving between the historic heritage and the modern life energy of the city. This building is not just an ordinary builder, it is a symbol that dominates the surrounding space and reminds us how important it is for art to have a dignified and representative place.

Now let's move forward in time together and look at how this monumental whole came into being. In order to understand the importance of this building, we must go back to the time when the city of Brno began to change intensively and modernise. The whole process of building this theatre was a long and demanding quite, which required not only huge funds, but above all strong will of people who wanted to have a top art centre in Brno. Construction started in the year one thousand nine hundred sixty-one. It was a time when architecture sought a new language, purity and functionality. After years of intensive work and building, on the second October of the year a thousand nine hundred and sixty-five, the most important event was the opening ceremony. This day has become an unforgettable moment for all music and dance lovers. The architect Jan Víšek, who was behind this proposal, was able to create a work that immediately became a solid part of the National Theatre Brno and which gave the city a whole new dimension.

Now pay attention to the very form of this building. Even when you're looking at a building from the outside, its character is inherent. It is a representative construction of the 1960s, an era characterized by the specific concept of space and form. Feel the weight and dignity this object radiates. Janáčkovo divadlo is not a building that wants to scream, but it is a building that requires respect with its presence. It's a space designed to serve great emotions. Inside is a large hall, which is the heart of the entire building. It is this space that is intended for the greatest artistic experience. It's where the magic of opera and ballet takes place every day. It is also a home for musicians from the Brno Philharmonic and for all who are looking forward to the Moravian Autumn Music Festival. The whole space is designed to allow each viewer to fully immerse himself in the music world.

When you look at this place, it is good to realize that you are not only in the presence of one building, but you are in a space that is deeply associated with the biggest names of Czech architecture and culture. Although this particular proposal is the work of Jan Víšek, the whole area and spirit of the city are shaped by the work of masters whose names you should not forget. Within the history of our architecture and cultural development, these pillars are names like Bohuslav Fuchs or Josef Gočár. They are people who have defined what our cities look like and how they live in them. In this context, the legacy of other greats such as Vlastislav Hofman, Josef Chochola or Pavel Janák is echoed. Names like Jan Kotěra, Emil Králík, Otakar Novotný or Oldřich Starý form an invisible network that connects this theatre to the entire history of Czech artistic expression. So this building is part of a larger, rich story that has been written for decades.

And now I want to tell you something that may not be obvious at first sight, but that gives this place a special depth and mystery. The whole way to build this theatre was not a quick process. It was rather a run on a very long track that lasted for generations. The efforts to get a new scene in Brno didn't start until the 1960s, but they were in full swing at the beginning of the twentieth century. Imagine the incredible patience and perseverance. During many decades, seven major architectural competitions took place. Seven attempts, seven different visions, seven efforts to see what this city's artistic heart should look like. Each competition brought new ideas, new faces and new views of what theatre meant. This long journey, full of waiting and discussion, eventually resulted in today's form that you see before you. It is a story about how great ambition and long-term vision can eventually materialise even so important construction.

Even in the newer times, he takes care of this place with great care. In the year two thousand and seven a process was initiated, which was intended not only to restore the auditorium but also the whole area around the theatre. This reconstruction was an important step towards keeping the building modern and fully functional for future generations without losing its original character and spirit of the 1960s.

Now that you know the story, the history, and the hidden layers surrounding this place, I invite you to further explore. You may choose to enter when there is a performance or you will enjoy the atmosphere of this street. Enjoy Brno, enjoy the beauty of this city and let yourself be carried away by its artistic spirit. Thank you for your journey and I wish you a wonderful time to discover our monuments. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring period Janáčkovo divadlo in Brno is transformed into air full of hope and new beginnings. The sun illuminates the architecture with a remarkable colour when flowering trees and bushes in the surrounding garden add colored colours to the background of the theatre. The atmosphere is full of peace and renewal, which makes this time ideal for a visit. It is recommended to visit in the morning when there are fewer people, and to come up with warm scarves or cloaks on a possible cold morning.

Summer: Summer brings the main season for the theatre. The sunlight illuminates the facade in a beautiful way, which is the perfect time for a photograph. The atmosphere is full of energy and durability thanks to weather suitable for outdoor activities. The theatre can become a place with more traffic, so we recommend you come early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid the crowd. Don't forget sun cream and light clothes.

Autumn: In autumn, the surroundings of Janáček Theatre turn into a colored kaleidoscope with leaves that pass green into yellow, orange and red shades. The sun is less intense, which gives the atmosphere a slightly melancholy touch. This season is ideal for a peaceful walk around the theatre when the crowd is already starting to retreat. We recommend wearing warmer clothes and taking with you a safety deposit box for any sudden cold weather.

Winter: The winter season offers the theatre a slightly romantic look, where the surrounding area is covered with snow and the sun illuminates the winter scenes. The atmosphere is quiet with fewer visitors, which allows a relaxed tour. The opening hours of the theatre may be shorter, so we recommend coming soon and wearing warm clothes with leather shoes or shoes on snow ground.
