Juchtová kaple is a classicist niche building located at the crossroads between the villages of Prestanov, Stradov and Unčín in Ústí nad Labem district. The chapel was built in 1813 as a monument to the Battle of Chlumce and Prestano, which took place during the wars of Naples. Its architecture is characterized by its horseshoe plan and triangular shield. Since 1994 it has been protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.

It was created in the places of the heaviest encounter during the battle that took place on 29 August 1813. The Russian forces have stopped the French force from proceeding with General Vandamm. The chapel was built as a monument to these events and stands where the hardest fights took place. The history of the region is closely linked to this conflict, which has had a significant impact on the region.

Architecturally, it represents a classical construction of a horseshoe floor plan with a triangular shield. The main facade takes the form of a Tuscan edicula placed on a simple plinth, the facade is divided on the sides by corner pilasters without original headers. The chapel was originally equipped with a statue of Ecce homo, later replaced by a granite monument from 1911. The construction is coated roughly and covered with a mortar semi-conical roof.

The chapel's ownership has not changed over the years because it was built as a public landmark. Dramatic changes passed around the chapel with time, especially after the Battle of Chlumce and Prestana, when the village was almost completely destroyed by the fire. In the following century, the area around the chapel was transformed into a battlefield with various monuments that resembled historical events.

A key interest is the name of the chapel, derived from the word "yacht," meaning a bovine leather with a characteristic red-brown colour. Legend has it that the soil around the chapel has turned into a yacht shade due to the bloody clashes of battle. This monument is part of a battlefield that contains various monumental objects of the winning powers of the Napoleon wars.

Today, the Juchtová kaple is located on the territory of the monument zone of the battlefield near Prestana, Chlumce and Varvajov. After a complete repair in 1995, the chapel is well maintained and accessible to visitors. Its historical importance and location in the places of important battles make it an interesting destination for those who want to know more about the Naples wars. Visit the Yucht Chapel offers an opportunity to immerse yourself in history and appreciate the architectural beauty of this classical monument.

Juchtová kaple is not only a monument but also a witness to an important historical event. Its existence reminds us of the importance and impact of the Naples wars on the region. For those who want to know more about this fascinating time, Juchtová kaple is a necessary destination.

Welcome to the Yucht Chapel. Stop for a moment, take a deep breath and feel the silence of this place. You are standing at the crossroads which connects the village of Prestanov, Stradov and Unčín. In front of you is an inconspicuous, but very important building that carries echoes of days past, the screams of fighting troops and the deep sadness of loss. The first impression of this chapel is a sense of calm and sobriety. It's a so-called niche building, which means it doesn't have a closed space to enter, but it's more like a sacred space open to the landscape, a reminder that will stop you in the way and make you think.

Let us now look together at why this chapel was created and what its historical context is. Let's move back more than two yards in time to 1813. Europe was on fire at the time of the Napoleon Wars. The French Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte controlled a large part of the continent, but his power began to be questioned. It was this year that the Battle of Chlumce and Prestano took place, which was one of the dramatic clashes of this era. Juchtová kaple was built not only as a religious object, but mainly as a reminder of the events that took place here, in this area. It was built shortly after the battle to commemorate the suffering and courage of those who have lost their lives here and to warn against the destructive force of war in the future.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself before you. The chapel is performed in classical style. Classicism is characterized by its purity, balance and return to the principles of the ancients. Note that the construction does not seem excessive or complex, but its beauty lies in simplicity and harmony. Look at her floor plan. If you looked at the chapel from above, you would notice it is horseshoe-shaped. This round element gives the construction softness and naturally opens it to the surrounding space. Now, please look up at the top of the chapel. You'll see a triangular shield, which is a typical feature of classical architecture. This element resembles ancient temples and gives the whole building a sense of stability and dignity. All these details work together so that the visitor feels respect for the place he stands.

When you look at the chapel, you might wonder who actually fought here in 1813. This place is not just a set of stones, but it is linked to the specific personalities who at the time decided the fate of thousands of soldiers. One of the key characters was the French generál Vandamme. His corps tried to move forward in this area and assert themselves, but they encountered severe resistance. On the opposite side there was a coalition where prince Evžen Württemberský and generál Ostermann-Tolstoj played an important role. Imagine the contrast between today's silence and the chaos at that time. It was here, around this intersection, that the hardest part of the encounter took place. It was a place where fates broke, and Russian troops were able to stop General Vandamm's French Corps. It is fascinating to think that this little chapel stands exactly where two powerful armies once met and decided on the strategic course of the campaign.

Now, if you look closely at the inside of the niche, notice the granite monument. It's an interesting detail that tells about the changes in the chapel over time. Originally there was a statue depicting the suffering Christ, known as Ecce homo. This statue was here for decades, but in 1911 it changed. The statue was replaced by this particular granite monument you see today. This change can symbolize the shift in how we perceived the memory of the battle and how we wanted to ensure its endurance. Granite is a very durable material that defies time and weather, which is suitable for a place to be an eternal reminder.

Besides architecture and personalities, there is one interesting thing that can be fascinating for you. Juchtová kaple is not just a randomly located building in the landscape. Her position at the crossroads is symbolic. The crossing is the place of meeting, deciding and changing direction. In the context of the Battle of Chlumce and Prestano, this means that this is where the progress of one of the armies broke. It's where history stopped and changed its course. This chapel thus serves as a silent witness to the moment when victory turned to retreat and hope into despair. It is essentially a stone record of a strategic point that has influenced the course of the Napoleon wars in this part of Europe.

In order to fully understand the chapel, we need to realise the path it has traveled in the last century. Its value has not always been acknowledged as we see it today. The break occurred in 1994 when Juchtová kaple was officially declared a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. This meant that the state recognized its irreplaceable importance for our history and architecture. Only a year later, in 1995, the chapel was completely repaired. Thanks to this reconstruction, we can admire its classical shapes today in such good condition and we can spend time here in peace without worrying that the construction will soon disappear into oblivion.

Now that you know the story of the Yucht Chapel, I suggest you take another look at it. Try to imagine the noise of the cannons, the dust from the horses and the marching soldiers who once passed through them. And then go back to the present. Feel how the sun goes down or how the trees are roaring. This chapel reminds us that even after the biggest storms and the bloodiest battles, peace is finally coming, and it is important to remember what happened to learn from these experiences.

I wish you to take from this place a sense of inner peace and a deeper knowledge of our history. Juchtová kaple is a small piece of great history that is hidden in our region. If you have time, walk a little further along the surrounding roads that the armies once went through, and perceive the atmosphere of this historic space. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a pleasant continued journey to discover the beauty and secrets of our country. Goodbye.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring: In the spring season of the chapel, the dazzling green gloss takes place when the first flowers appear in the surrounding park and the trees begin to sprout. The sunny days bring warm light that emphasizes the architectural beauty of the chapel. At this time the weather can suddenly be variable, so we recommend wearing layered clothes to adapt to both warm and cold periods. Visit the chapel in the early afternoon time when there are fewer visitors and the opportunity to enjoy quiet walks around.

Summer: During the summer season the chapel celebrates the full power of nature. Grasses are green, trees enjoy their greatest shine and the surrounding park offers ideal conditions for relaxation in nature. The sunny days can be very warm, so it is advisable to visit the chapel in the morning or evening to avoid the hottest hours. Don't forget the sun protection and enough drinking water. Despite possible visitors, this time is ideal for use of the park where you can enjoy the picnic.

Autumn: In autumn the chapel gains melancholic charm due to colored leaves and lighter sunlight. This time of year is ideal for enjoying the beauty of nature in a quiet environment where fewer people visit the memory. The wet and cold climate requires warmer clothes and perhaps an umbrella for a possible rain attack. Visit the chapel in the early afternoon time when the atmosphere is most pleasant.

Winter: In winter, Juchtová kaple becomes a place of refuge from the cold. Snow sheets and ice conditions can provide a unique view of the monument, while a quiet neighborhood offers the possibility of walking in a quiet environment. Visitors should be prepared for cold and short opening times, so it is advisable to visit the chapel soon after opening. Hot clothes and wind protection are essential for a comfortable visit. Despite the cold, the peaceful atmosphere surrounding the chapel can be enjoyed at this time.
