kaple Panny Marie Bolestné (Kunratice) Chapel
Kaple Panny Marie Bolestné in Kunratice is a small yet historically significant chapel located in the scenic Frýdlantský Výběžek region of Liberecký kraj, Czech Republic. Built at the end of the 18th century during the late Baroque period, it reflects the cultural and architectural developments of Bohemia under the Habsburg Monarchy. Despite neglect during the communist era in Czechoslovakia, it was partially restored in 2013 with funding from the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. Its historical context and unique architectural features make it a notable site for visitors interested in exploring the region's rich cultural heritage.
The chapel originated in the late 18th century on a site known as Tongrund, showcasing the Baroque style prevalent at that time. This era marked significant cultural and artistic advancements across Europe, with Bohemia being part of the Habsburg Monarchy. The chapel's construction highlights its importance as a representation of architectural trends and religious sentiments of the period.
Architecturally, Kaple Panny Marie Bolestné features a square plan with smooth plastered walls divided by lisen fields and pilasters, topped with a gabled roof covered in shingles. Baroque design elements are evident in its structured form and decorative details. However, due to neglect during the communist era, much of the original structure was lost, leaving only parts of the western and northern walls intact by 1989. Restoration efforts in 2013 focused on raising these remaining walls and covering them with shingles, although the chapel still lacks external plastering and entrance doors.
Throughout its history, the chapel has experienced various fortunes, particularly during the communist era when it significantly deteriorated. The restoration project initiated in 2013 marked a turning point, providing much-needed preservation efforts funded by the Ministry of Culture. Despite these efforts, some original features remain absent, such as the entrance doors and external plastering.
An intriguing aspect of Kaple Panny Marie Bolestné is its location near two large trees, adding to the serene environment surrounding the chapel. Historically, it housed an 18th-century Pieta sculpture, although this was not present during the 2013 restoration. These elements contribute to the chapel's unique character and historical narrative.
Today, Kaple Panny Marie Bolestné stands as a partially restored monument that offers visitors a glimpse into its storied past. While some original features are missing, it remains an important cultural site worth visiting for those interested in Baroque architecture and Czech history. Its serene setting near Kunratice makes it an ideal destination for exploring the region's historical landscape.
Kaple Panny Marie Bolestné invites visitors to appreciate its historical significance and architectural beauty, despite the challenges it has faced over time. As a preserved piece of cultural heritage, it offers a unique opportunity to connect with the past and reflect on the enduring legacy of Baroque architecture in the Czech Republic.

Points of interest
- The chapel's location on the site known as Tongrund hints at a historical connection to local geographical or cultural significance that predates its construction in the late 18th century.
- Despite being built during the Baroque period, which is often associated with grandeur and opulence, Kaple Panny Marie Bolestné features relatively modest architectural elements like smooth plastered walls and lisen fields, reflecting a more restrained interpretation of Baroque style in this region.
- The chapel originally housed an 18th-century Pieta sculpture, adding to its religious significance. However, the absence of this sculpture during the 2013 restoration suggests it may have been relocated or lost over time, leaving visitors curious about its current whereabouts.
- Although partially restored, the chapel lacks some original features such as entrance doors and external plastering. This incomplete restoration leaves room for speculation on what the full Baroque splendor might have looked like when it was first built.
- The presence of two large trees near the chapel not only enhances its serene environment but also suggests a possible historical landscaping choice, reflecting an intention to integrate natural beauty with architectural design during its construction period.

The Chapel of Our Lady of Sorrows is a small sacred building in open countryside east of Kunratice, on the way to Frýdlant. It is located in the Frýdlant projection in the north of the Liberec region and is under monument protection.
The chapel was built at the end of the eighteenth century in a place called Tongrund. Two mature trees grow right next to it. A Pietà sculpture, also made during the eighteenth century, originally stood inside.
After the end of the Second World War, no one cared for the chapel and until the fall of the communist regime in nineteen eighty-nine it fell into disrepair. Only a torso remained from it, that is, the remnants of the masonry of the western and northern walls. Parts of the pilasters with vault extensions and semicircular sections were still visible on their inner side. However, no one secured the remains of the building, so they continued to deteriorate.
Originally it was a brick structure with a square ground plan. Smooth plaster on the walls was divided by pilaster strips and pilasters. At the top, a gable roof covered the chapel with burnt bobrovka tiles. The entrance was and still is on the south side and is framed by stone trim.
Restoration came in twenty thirteen, when the Ministry of Culture contributed to it through a grant. The perimeter masonry and rear gable were then rebuilt to their original height and covered with tiles from above. The floor was also repaired and the interior walls were plastered. However, the exterior walls remained without plaster and the chapel has no entrance doors. The interior was empty at the time of the repairs and the Pietà sculpture was no longer in it.
