Kaple svatého Václava v Prachové represents the last physical traces of the extinct village in the Ústí Region. It is located on the cadastral territory of Encovan north of Polek in district Litoměřice. This place has traces of generations that have tried to maintain continuity with the extinct location.

The extinct village of Drachch is rooted in the deep Middle Ages. In the 13th and 14th centuries, namely between 1275 and 1386, it belonged to the property of the monastery of Chotešov. She had her own church of St. Nicholas, which served as a spiritual and social center of the local community. But this medieval prosperity did not hold. The village died by source either during Hussite wars (1419- 1434) or up to 30 years of war (1618- 1648). In any case, Dhoch was finally emptying and became a extinct village.

Two centuries later, in 1835, a classical chapel of St. Wenceslas was built on the ruins of the old church of St. Nicholas. The construction was not an attempt to revive the village, it had practical purpose - to serve as a cemetery chapel for neighbouring villages of Hrušovany and Encovany, which, on the contrary, prospered. The new common cemetery of both villages is located about half a kilometer from the chapel, below the slope. The interesting thing is that the old Pear cemetery is surrounded by the local Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary. The building of the chapel thus represents a special case of partial recovery of the extinct site - as a cemetery area, not as a housing place.

Only the perimeter walls, the tower and two arches from the original vault were preserved from the building today. Other elements disappeared. The chapel is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic and appears on the list of endangered objects. After 1948, the chapel was desolate. The decisive blow was caused by the loss of the roof cover that was taken out and used for the construction of the JZD cow. Without protection, the construction was rapidly disintegrated. He's privately owned today. Ruina Prachy remains a testament to the fate of the Czech countryside - a place where several attempts were made to maintain a link with the past.

Architectural development

The chapel was built in an empirical style in the place of the older church of St. Nicholas, which belonged to the extinct medieval village of Prach. Only the perimeter walls, tower and two arches from the original vault were preserved from the original building. The construction was originally covered, but after 1948 the cover was removed and used for other purposes. The construction material is not specified in detail, but it is typically masonry made of local stones and plaster.

Historical events

The destruction of the medieval village of Prach during the Hussite wars (1419- 1434) and the definitive demise of the village during the Thirty Years' War (1618- 1648); construction of the chapel in 1835 as a cemetery building for surrounding municipalities; the destruction of the chapel after 1948 after the collection of the roofing.

The Chapel of Saint Václav stands in the place of the vanished village of Prachová, on the cadastral territory of Encovany north of Polepy in the Litoměřice district. From the classicist building, which some sources also refer to as a church, only the perimeter walls, the tower, and two arches of the original vault remain. The chapel is a protected cultural monument and is also among endangered cultural monuments.

The village of Prachová in the years 1275 and 1386 belonged to the Chotěšov monastery and a Church of Saint Nicholas stood there. According to some sources, it disappeared already during the Hussite Wars, that is, between the years 1419 and 1434. According to others, its final end came only with the Thirty Years' War in the years 1618 to 1648.

The spacious Chapel of Saint Václav was built on the ruins of the old church in the year 1835. This was not an attempt to restore the vanished village. The chapel was to serve only as a cemetery chapel for Hrušovany and Encovany. The new cemetery, shared by both villages, lies about half a kilometer downhill from the chapel. The old Hrušovan cemetery is surrounded by the Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary there.

After the year 1948, the chapel fell into disrepair. The roofing was removed from it and served in the construction of a cowshed for the unified agricultural cooperative. Today the chapel is in private ownership.

Since it is a ruin, it is recommended to take also a small raincoat or umbrella, because the weather can be unpredictable. For convenience you can also take a small backpack with water and refreshments.

Photography is permitted at this point, but care must be taken to respect the monument and the surrounding environment. It is ideal for quality images to use natural light in the morning or afternoon hours when light is softer and creates fewer shadows.

You can visit the Church of the Birth of the Virgin Mary in Hrušovany, which is only a few kilometers away. It is also possible to go to the Polek, which is located about three kilometres north, and explore local natural and cultural wealth. It is advisable for nature lovers to take the opportunity to visit the surrounding forests and field formations that are ideal for walks and picnics.

For families with children a visit to St. Wenceslas Chapel is an appropriate opportunity to learn about history and nature. Children can see the ruins of the chapel and learn more about its origin and meaning. You can play around and explore nature, which is a great way to spend your time outside. For kids

Imagine going back to the past. Until the day people lived in Dust. The place where you find picturesque hills and forests today was densely wooded.

It was like a fairy tale. People lived here in a village called Juice Head. They were mostly peasants who cared about their fields and cottages. The former Prachov Valley was their home.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring Kaple svatého Václava v Prachové awakens to life after winter sleep. The sun illuminates the remains of stone walls with a fine, scattered light that reflects the greenening meadows and young leaves around. The atmosphere is full of fine air that smells of rain and blooming grass. During this period, the ruin becomes a place where history meets nature - the first flowers appear between the crumbling walls and air is driven by light spring winds. The best time to visit is early morning or late afternoon when the place is quieter. It is advisable to wear light but protective clothing - the sun can be direct, and although temperatures rise, evenings are still cold. Watch out for mud after the rains that may be on the road to the monument.

Summer In the main summer season the chapel in Prachy attracts visitors with its mystical impression, when the sun illuminates the rest of the building with golden light. The atmosphere is warm and full of life - there are fields and forests around the ruins that smell of cheese grass and sunflowers. In this period, however, larger crowds must be counted on, especially on Fridays and weekends. The best time to visit is in the morning when the heat is still mild and the place is still relatively quiet. It is recommended light but protective clothing, hat and plenty of water. On your way to the monument, avoid footwear that could be contaminated with mud, and don't forget the sunscreen.

Autumn Autumn Dust offers a unique atmosphere where the sun illuminates the ruins of the chapel with a bent, golden light that contrasts with dark forests and fields. Leaves in trees turn into colors from yellow to orange and red, creating a picturesque scene for historical memory. The air is cold and clean, often driven by mild winds that bring soft cold. The best time to visit is a week when the place is quieter. It is advisable to wear warmer clothes, perhaps even with a vest, and not forget the umbrella, because autumn weather can be variable. Watch out for slippery roads along the rains that can be around the sights.

Winter Kaple svatého Václava v Prachové turns into a place of peace and quiet in winter, where it is illuminated by a weak, scattered light of the sun, which is reflected from snow. The atmosphere is cold and calm, with a fine cold that penetrates the bones. The snow blanket surrounds the ruins and creates a magical setting that resembles a fairy tale. It is advisable to wear warm, layered clothes, hat and gloves to maintain body temperature. The path to the monument can be covered by snow and therefore it is necessary to count on the longer path and the possibility of slippery surfaces.
