Husa's house on the Kavčí plák in Hradec Králové is a modernist building that was created by rebuilding the original rental house. It is marked as a cultural monument and represents a significant example of the architecture of individualistic modernity.

The original building is recorded already in 1620. The first known owner was Karel Bernášek (1790) and later František Lhota (1806). After the death of Lhota in 1853, the house became the property of his widow, who married the organist Bedrich Anders. Anders founded a restaurant and a spa and built a wooden arena in the garden for theatre performances. The first game, "From the Comic Opera" and Peshka's farce, "Seventy tailors of Mr. Čvančara," took place on 21 August 1881. In 1864 here born poet Adolf Černý, known as Jan Rokyta.

In 1883 the house was sold to the Evangelical Church of the Augschpur religion in Chernilov. According to Victor Weinhengst's project, he was converted into a student pension, known as the Luther Institute. From 1913 to 1914, according to the design of architect Václav Rejchl, it was fundamentally rebuilt, which led to almost complete demolition of the original building. In 1915 the house was renamed the House of Hus in connection with the anniversary of the death of Jan Hus.

Architecturally, the house is rebuilt in the spirit of individualistic modernity. It has a cubic three-storey structure on an irregular plan with a rounded corner and a terrace above the slope. The first and second floors are divided by two central columns in the high order with Ionian warheads and canelura. Above the windows of the second floor there is a flat frieze with the inscription "HUSV SBOR." In the northwest corner of the roof is located a tower from 1914 in the shape of a regular cross. Its roof has a lower tambur with a charge that copies the structure of the tower, and in the main axes in front of the cheek they present shallow risalts.

The building has gone through a difficult history. It was confiscated during the Protectorate and opened in 1940 for Hitler Youth. After World War II, she returned briefly to the parish choir, then nationalized and belonged to the District Company of Services. Later there was a school of apprenticeship, Vkus cooperative, Agroprojekt offices or the Central Vocational School of the Local Economy. After the Velvet Revolution, the house returned to the Evangelical Church and the Evangelical Academy was active here between 1996 and 2006.

On the facade there is a commemorative granite plate with the inscription of Adolf Černý, known as Jan Rokyta. Today, the House of Hus is declared a cultural monument and is worth visiting as a witness to the architectural development and complex history of the city.

Tips for visitors

The best time for a tour is during bright days when sunlight best highlights modernist shapes and details of the building. For photography it is ideal to use soft light during morning or late afternoon hours, which helps to better capture the architecture of Václav Rejchl.

You can either get to Hus's house by transport or use the city's resources. The current connections and timetables are best checked in the Internet search engine or mobile application for transport.

When visiting, we recommend taking a camera to capture details of the building or a notebook. If you move around for a long time, it is advisable to carry drinking water.

Since there are no other targets in the base, we recommend planning the route at your discretion. It is advisable for families with children to choose a peaceful walk in the surroundings that is not physically demanding.
