The abbey in today's village Klášter Hradiště nad Jizerou in Mladoboloslavsk was founded by the family of Markvartice probably in 1145, although this figure is only foreseen and was not documented as an official year of establishment. The first mention in the preserved archives is 1184, when the monastery appears in the list of Prince Bedřich, who names Abbot Děřich. Further expansion of the influence of the abbey took place in the 13th century - in 1269 the Hradiz became a Patronian monastery for the women's monastery Sezemice, and in 1279 the local monks founded the town of Munich Hradišt. Economic problems, however, were already worrying the community in the late Middle Ages; In 1281, the abbey complained about the general surrender and were given permission to dissolve the convention for three years.

During the late Middle Ages, the Hradiste maintained its prestigious position. In 1398 Pope Bonifác IX. accepted a member of the community of Borka of the Animals to the chapel, and in 1401 ordered to join the monastery's estate of five nearby parish churches to help resolve the still critical financial situation. The destruction came on 30 April 1420 when the orebites destroyed and burned the abbey; The monastery library was lost and the monks retreated to the nearby castle Bezdez. The community later moved to the Zlatá Korun Cisteriac monastery in southern Bohemia, where its last members lived in the 16th century.

Architectural history was reflected in later reconstruction. In 1556 he became the owner of Jiří Labounský of Laboune, who had built a Renaissance chateau on the ruins of the monastery with a brewery; The remains of the monastery buildings have become a valuable source of building material for the wider surroundings. During the 30-year war, he owned the Albrecht complex from Valdštejn, while its time resembles a pair of coat of arms reliefs with the year 1613 above the Gothic gate. In 1852, the Waldstein-Wartenberg complex was rebuilt into a brewery, and large storage cellars were gradually created underground.

The twentieth century brought archeological discoveries and partly losses. In 1869, the brewery burned down. During the reconstruction of the complex in 1920-1921, valuable remains were uncovered - part of the temple mosaic tiles and foundations of the capitular hall - documented by archaeologist J. V. Šimák. In 1934, archaeologist A. Knor found four graves with esque earrings, now stored in the Munich Museum. Unfortunately, part of this period was the destruction - the director of the brewery against the will of the Memorial Office destroyed part of the preserved northern wall of the temple.

Today, the monastery is a continuously protected monument and is still used by the Monastery Brewery, which produces an unusual combination of history and modern beer shops. In a place where the tankers once sang in prayer and where hunger tormented the community in the 14th century, there is now a noise of modern production, but it guards its historical roots.

The former Cistercian abbey of Hradiště was founded in the twelfth century above the confluence of the Jizera and Zábrdka rivers, in the present-day village of Klášter Hradiště nad Jizerou in the Mladoboleslav region. The abbey complex is a registered monument.

The monastery was founded by the Markvartice family, probably in the year 1145. However, this year is only an assumption. The Plasy Chronicle, Tilia Plassensis from the eighteenth century, places the founding of the abbey in 1177. The monastery is documented only from 1184. At that time, in a charter of Duke Frederick for the monastery of Plasy, the Hradiště abbot Dětřich appears among the witnesses.

Monks from Hradiště founded the nearby town of Mnichovo Hradiště. The first record of it comes from 1279 and we owe it to a visit by Queen Kunhuta, widow of Přemysl Otakar the Second. She was imprisoned at that time with her son Václav at the nearby Bezděz fortress. In 1352, a second town of the Hradiště Cistercians is mentioned, Nova Civitas. Its exact location is not known.

The monastery struggled financially for a long time. After the plundering by Brandenburg troops, the abbot requested in 1281 to be allowed to dissolve the convent for three years. In 1401, Pope Boniface the Ninth ordered five neighbouring parish churches to be attached to the monastery so that their income would help. Ten years later, the general chapter at Cîteaux dealt with the debt of Hradiště to the abbey of Morimond.

The end came on April thirtieth, 1420, when Hussite forces burned the abbey and the monastery library was lost. The monks fled to Bezděz and the community later moved to the monastery of Zlatá Koruna in southern Bohemia. Its last members lived out their lives there in the sixteenth century. The restoration of the monastery was considered, but it did not happen.

In 1556, Jiří Labouňský of Labouně had a Renaissance chateau with a small brewery built on the ruins. The monastery buildings became a source of building material for the surrounding area. At the beginning of the seventeenth century, the estate was owned by Václav Budovec of Budova, and after the Battle of White Mountain by Albrecht of Waldstein. Two coats of arms with the date 1613 above the Gothic gate commemorate that period.

In 1852, the Waldstein-Wartenbergs rebuilt the entire complex into a brewery and extensive cellars were created underground. The Klášter brewery operates to this day. During another reconstruction in 1920 and 1921, mosaic floor paving of the cathedral and the foundations of the chapter hall were found. However, the brewery director at that time, against the wishes of the Monuments Office, had part of the preserved northern wall of the cathedral demolished. In 1934, four graves with S-shaped earrings were discovered north of the cathedral, which are now kept in the museum in Mnichovo Hradiště.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring Klášter Hradiště in the spring months offers a unique atmosphere of changing weather, where sunny days are changed with rainy moments and fog, which covers the ruin as a mysterious veil. The surrounding forests are awakening to life - the first flowers of spring plants, such as the spleen or birdseed, brighten the sides of the Jizera, while the sun, which is rising high in this period of longer days, creates a game of light and shadow on the stones of the monastery that highlights its Gothic details. The air smells of fresh soil and moisture, while streams of rain add sound accompaniment to the quiet rustling of leaves. It is also specific that at this time the monastery is relatively empty - the tourist crowds have not yet returned in full force, so it is possible to enjoy peaceful walks between ruins without rush. It is recommended to visit it early in the morning when light hits the west side of the monastery and creates magical effects. Clothes should be layered - spring weather changes rapidly, and even when the sun welcomes, evenings can be cold. Shoes with good grip are necessary, for in the rain the paths are muddy and uneven.

Summer In the summer months, Klášter Hradiště will turn into a live scene where the sun, which is almost vertically lit here at noon, causes sharp shadows on the stones and creates contrast between warm and cold surfaces. The surrounding area is green and full of life - the bushes and trees are in full power, and if you visit the monastery in June or July, you can also see the first fruits of forest berries. The air is warm and light, but in the narrow areas of the ruins the heat builds up, so it is good to have water and light clothes to protect against direct sunlight. The best time to visit is early in the morning or late in the afternoon, when the sun is not so hot and the crowds of tourists have not started or stopped. In the main summer season, the monastery is often visited by groups, so it is advisable to avoid weekends and holidays when families come here with children. Remember the fixed shoes - dry roads are pleasant in summer, but some parts of the ruins are steep and stony.

Autumn Autumn brings a unique colour to the area of the Hradiště Monastery, where tree leaves turn into shades of yellow, orange and red, creating contrast with the dark stone walls of the monastery. The sun, which shines lower on the horizon in September and October, paints the ruin into warm tones, while in November it dominates the colder light and fog that rolls between the ruins like shadows of the past. The air is clean and cold, but not yet as sharp as in winter, and the forests smell of fallen leaves and moisture. Autumn is an ideal time for photographers - a monastery combined with a colorful forest creates dramatic compositions. It is recommended to visit it at a time when leaves start to change, i.e. in September, when it is still warm, but not as hot as summer. Clothes should be warm, but not too heavy - the morning and evening are cold, but it can be pleasant at noon. Watch out for rainy days when the roads can be slippery and some parts of the ruin difficult to reach.

Winter Winter visit to the Hradic Monastery is like a trip to another world - the white snow cover turns the ruin into a mysterious, almost fairy tale scenery, while the frost freezes every sound, except for the cracking of the ice in Sizera and the rustling of the snow under the shoes. The sun, which shines short and low in December, throws long shadows on the wall of the monastery, which gives the place a dramatic feel. The surrounding forests are covered with snow, and if it attacks more, the monastery appears to be cut off from the world, which strengthens the sense of loneliness and history. In winter the monastery is almost deserted, which allows a quiet tour without disturbing crowds. It is recommended to visit it on clear winter days when the sun shines, or in a quiet winter fog that gives the place mysticism. Clothes must be warm, windy and waterproof - frost and snow can be sudden, and some parts of the ruins are exposed to wind. It is advisable to dress in layers to react easily to temperature changes.
