Kleinův palác is an important Neo-Renaissance building in the historical heart of Brno in Freedom Square. From 1847 to 1848, the entrepreneur Franz Klein built it as a family residence. Today the building is listed on the list of cultural monuments of the Czech Republic.

The construction was created during the period of rapid industrialization of the Habsburg monarchy, when Brno, called the Moravian Manchester, was dynamically developing. Franz Klein, a member of a well-known business family, purchased the Golden Ball House in 1842 at the site of today's palace and had it demolished. The project of the new two-dwelling townhouse was developed by architect Ludwig Förster; historical sources also suggest the possible participation of Theophile von Hansen.

The architectural representation of the palace reflects the business achievements of the Klein family. The most significant element of the facade are cast iron arches. They did not only fulfil the aesthetic function, but served as direct advertising for the main business article of the family - iron. These elements were made by family ironworks in Sobotín. During the extensive reconstruction in the 1990s, the inner courtyard was covered with glass construction and modern engineering networks and a personal elevator were inserted into the building.

The building's property history is colorful. After Franz Klein, his sister Marie, married to an attorney and a regional member of Eduard Ulrich, took over the building in 1880. Since 1885 their son Eduard Ulrich younger was co-owner. After his suicide in 1904 the palace was purchased by factory Karel Buchta, a well-known producer of musical instruments. His descendants owned the building until 1945. In 1949 the palace was transferred to the property of Brno. In the second half of the 20th century, the building was dilapidated due to inappropriate building modifications, distribution of rooms by partitions, fire of land and water flow.

A major turnaround occurred in 1994 when Crédit Lyonnais Bank Prague took over the palace. Between 1995 and 1997 it invested 80 million crowns in a complete reconstruction. For this she obtained free rental of some space from the city for 90 years. Crédit Agricole, which Crédit Lyonnais bought, left the Czech market and the premises of the palace in 2012.

Currently the object serves both commercial and non-commercial purposes. On the ground floor there are shops, there are bunk apartments in the attic and there is a Brno branch of the Czech Bar Association or information and educational centre of Jiří Mahen Library.

Kleinův palác represents a unique combination of industrial history and architecture of the 19th century, which has been preserved for future generations. Visiting this place in the heart of Brno offers the opportunity to see a representative demonstration of Neo-Renaissance construction, which still reminds today of the era of the expansion of the Moravian industry.

Welcome to the heart of Brno, where history meets the rhythm of a modern city. You're standing in Freedom Square, one of the most important points of this historic core. In front of your eyes is an impressive building that immediately captures your attention with its size and elegance. It's Kleinův palác. Just by looking at his massive facade, you can feel the weight of the time and power of the human ambition that has begotten this structure. Feel this atmosphere, feel the feeling that you are at a monument that was not just built as an ordinary house, but as an expression of the success and position of your creator.

Let us return together to the middle of the nineteenth century, until Brno became a modern industrial centre. Imagine a year of a thousand eight hundred and forty-seven. During this period, new currents of thought and technological progress have started to move throughout the city. It was at that time that an important businessman named Franz Klein decided to create a new, dignified family home in this strategic place. He didn't just want simple housing, he wanted something that would reflect his prosperity and influence. The construction of this magnificent palace began in the year one thousand eight hundred and forty-seven and lasted until one thousand eight hundred and forty-eight. This project was the work of the top artists of its time. The main architect was Ludwig Förster, and it is assumed that another great builder, Theophil von Hansen, could participate in the overall design. Thanks to them, the building has acquired its characteristic Neo-Renaissance appearance, which can be seen today.

Now pay attention to what you see right in front of you. Look at this facade that dominates the entire square. Notice how balanced the building is and what its rhythm is. If you raise your eyes to the top of the facade, you will see the beauty of the Neo-Renaissance style that emphasizes harmony and monumentality. But the most important thing you should be watching right now are the outputs that stand out from the facade. They're arches. Notice their shape and how they intertwine with the overall structure of the building. These arches are not just window outlets for better light inside the rooms. They're made of cast iron. At the time, it was a technological miracle and a symbol of state-of-the-art industrial progress. These cast iron elements are incredibly detailed and at the same time seem very firm and permanent.

And it is here that one of the greatest secrets and the greatest evidence of the importance of this place. You may not see it at first sight, but these beautiful cast iron details on the facade served as direct and very effective advertising. At the time, the Klein family controlled a huge iron shop. This whole palace was basically a huge visual advertisement for their main business article. These complex and beautiful shapes that you are now seeing have not been conjured out of imagination, but have been produced directly in the family ironworks in Sobotín. Imagine the path of the material from the hot furnaces in Sobotín to these fine, artistic details in Brno Square. It's a perfect combination of heavy industry and high art.

The fascinating stories of the people who lived here or connected to this place are also behind this construction. Franz Klein was a man of action, a visionary who knew how to use the power of material to build an empire. But the palace witnessed other fates. In his history, names like Marie Ulrichová or Eduard Ulrich appear, which were part of a wider social circle in this city. We must not forget Karl Bucht, whose name is also associated with this place. The palace has undergone many changes in time, just as Brno had many other periods. The family home became a space for large financial institutions. In the year one thousand nine hundred ninety-four, Crédit Lyonnais took over the building from Prague, leading to an important reconstruction so that the palace can continue to serve urban life in a new form. Later, in the year two thousand and twelve, Crédit Agricole was active here before its operation ended in these premises.

And if you want to hear one more interesting thing that will help you better understand the transformation of this place, we need to look even deeper below the surface. Imagine this place over a hundred and seventy years ago. There was no Neo-Renaissance house where this palace is now. There used to be an old house called The Golden Ball House. It was a traditional object, but it had to give way to a new era. Businessman Franz Klein decided to have it demolished in the year one thousand eight hundred forty-two to make room for his big vision. It's a fascinating idea that every big thing requires sometimes a determination to let the old one die so that it can be new and much bigger.

I hope that this brief view of the history of Klein's palace has at least interested you a little bit and helped you better understand what you are seeing. You are standing in front of a building that is a symbol of the combination of ambitious business, industrial power and the best architectural capabilities of the nineteenth century. Let yourself continue to be inspired by the atmosphere of Liberty Square and continue your walk through this wonderful city. Every next step can lead you to more unexpected attractions and other stories that Brno hides. Thank you for your attention and I wish you a beautiful and rewarding further discovery of this city.

Tips for visitors

The best time for a tour is in the morning on working days when there are fewer people in the city centre and you can enjoy the decorated facade of the palace without crowds of tourists.

The palace is located in a pedestrian zone in the heart of the city. We recommend using public transport, which stops within walking distance. If you arrive by car, use the parking places at the edge of the historic core because the entrance is restricted in the immediate vicinity.

Take comfortable shoes to walk on historic tiles. If you plan to photograph, the best light on the facade falls in the morning when the sun illuminates the details of the neo-Renaissance architecture from the square.

Within 30 minutes' walk you can visit Old Town Hall with its rich history or St. Peter and Paul Cathedral, which dominates the city's panorama. The entire historical centre of Brno offers pleasant walks between monuments.

For families with children, Liberty Square is an ideal place for a short rest. Close to the palace you will find plenty of room for children to move and easy access to refreshments in nearby historic alleys.
