Castle Kost is located in the Czech Paradise in the cadastral territory of Podkost, which forms part of the village Libošovice in the district of Jičín Králové Hradec Region. As a cultural monument, it is protected by the state and belongs to significant structures of its type in the region.

The original castle was founded here in the middle of the 14th century. The older fortress, which was originally here, was deliberately demolished, and a new building was created in the second half of the same century. At its inception, the castle took the form of a gradual addition and expansion over generations. The first documented owner was the end of the first half of the 14th century Beneš III. z Vartenberka. His descendants were Kost until the beginning of the 15th century when Zajícové z Hazmburka acquired it. For this family it became an important home until 1497.

During the first half of the sixteenth century the castle was owned by páni ze Šelmberka and from Biberstejn, who significantly rebuilt it and extended its residential spaces. The Biberstejns added another living wing between the second and third gates. The owners later included Lobkovicové, under which the castle gradually loses the character of the superstructure and begins to decay. In 1637 it was bought by Černínové z Chudenic, who held it for about a hundred years when they performed only the necessary maintenance for the economic operation and management of the estate. Since 1738, the castle belonged to the Netholite of Eisenberg, which was later inherited by the family of Kinské dal Borgo, the Italian line of the hairy branch of the originally Czech count of Kinski.

The architecture of the castle is dominated by a large residential tower, which is supplemented by an opposite palace with a round tower in the corner and a second smaller residential tower on the севer. This composition was obtained by the castle core gradually during two construction phases. Lobkovicové still had economic buildings built in a substation, which was the last major building intervention in the form of a fortress.

In 1945 the castle was nationalized, but after the Velvet Revolution, the descendants of Kinski took it back. Today, Kost is associated with the list of protected cultural monuments and represents one of the characteristic buildings of the Czech Paradise, where its Gothic architecture reminds of a rich period when alternating nobility formed his face and fates.

Kost is a Gothic castle in Český ráj. It is located in the cadastral territory of Podkost, which belongs to the municipality of Libošovice in the Jičín district, and is protected as a cultural monument.

The castle was founded approximately in the middle of the fourteenth century. Its first documented owner was Beneš Třetí z Vartenberka at the end of the first half of the fourteenth century. His descendants owned Kost until the beginning of the fifteenth century. At that time, it was acquired by the Zajícové z Hazmburka, and until the year 1497 it was an important family seat for them.

In the first half of the sixteenth century, the castle changed hands among the gentlemen from Šelmberka and from Biberštejna, who significantly expanded its living quarters. After them, the Lobkovicové took over the castle. Under their rule, it ceased to serve as the seat of the nobility and began to fall into decay.

The neglected castle was purchased in 1637 by the Černínové z Chudenic. For roughly the next hundred years, they only performed maintenance necessary for economic operations and estate administration. From 1738 onwards, Kost was owned by the Netoličtí z Eisenberka. After them, it was inherited by the Kinští dal Borgo family, the Italian line of the Chlumec branch of the originally Czech noble Kinský family. In 1945, the castle was nationalized, but after the Velvet Revolution, the descendants of the Kinský family got it back.

The construction history of the castle begins surprisingly. The oldest castle from the first half of the fourteenth century was deliberately demolished, and in the second half of that century, a new castle was built in its place. Over two construction phases, the castle's core acquired approximately the shape that has been preserved to this day.

The castle's dominant feature became a spacious residential tower. Opposite it stood a palace with a round tower at the corner, and on the north side it was complemented by a second, smaller residential tower. In the first half of the sixteenth century, the Biberštejnové added another residential wing between the second and third gate. The last major expansion was brought by the Lobkovicové, who had economic buildings constructed below the castle.

Tips for visitors

For the best experience we recommend visiting outside the main summer season, for example in spring or autumn, when there are fewer people in the castle and the atmosphere is quieter.

Traffic to the monument is possible by car and public transport; parking is available for the driver near the castle, and you can check the current connection of the means of transport in the search engine.

We recommend to bring comfortable shoes suitable for uneven historical surfaces and plenty of drinking water. For families with children the tour is very interesting thanks to the authentic atmosphere, but it is necessary to assume that some rooms may be narrow.

If you are interested in photography, you will find the best light to capture the details of architecture and living tower during late afternoon hours. Great footage of the castle walls can be taken from elevated places in the area.

After visiting the castle you can explore the beauty offered by the whole Czech Paradise, which is ideal for lovers of nature and history.

For kids

Did you know a castle can be as hard as a bone? This one really is - and it's even called! Castle Kost stands in the Czech Paradise and old reputation says he got his name because he was "tough as a bone." Because no one could take it by force. The soldiers may have tried, but the castle has endured everything, and it still stands here almost as it was when the medieval builders built it.
