The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Lower Počernice stands in the close neighbourhood of the chateau as one of the oldest monuments of Prague. It is a parochial temple, which was probably connected to the fort with a wooden footbridge or bridge, which physically linked the religious and secular life of the local community.

The oldest parts of the church come from around 1200 in Romanesque style, probably built in the place of the older wooden temple. The dating is not quite certain - historians differ in opinions and put it between the 1960s and the 1200s, based on the archaic design of the compressed enchantments of the east window. The masonry made of sandstone blocks, exceeding 55 centimetres wide, resembles the masonry of St. Bartholomew's Church in Kiev, which leads historians to think that both buildings could have carried out the same construction plant. The village is mentioned in writing for the first time in 1323, the church in 1360 in connection with the submission of the right of Dorota Pushová to the parish.

During the Gothic period, two major reconstructions took place in the church. First, the ship extended to the west by one vaulting field, which is narrowing. Later, a massive tower was built, which apparently took over the defensive function of the old fortress. In the 15th and 16th centuries, the church experienced dramatic moments - the Hussite seized it in 1421 and placed here the Kališnik priests, in 1448 camped in front of its walls an army of Podebrad unity. In 1562 Dolní Počernice acquired Matej Holeka and had the church ship encapsulated three fields of brick vaults.

The decisive change came in the 19th century. In 1856, the estate was originally acquired by the Hungarian nobleman family of Dercsényi de Dercsény and had the church grossly modified in the New Romanesque style. This reconstruction from the outside covered almost all the original Romanesque elements except the window in the east wall of the presbytery while the interior was basically preserved. The New Romanesque form was completed in 1904. In 1897 Dolní Počernice acquired its own parish, whose first vicar was Bedřich Masek.

Since 1964, the church has been listed in the list of cultural monuments. Today, the visitor is observing the layering of styles - from Romanesque foundations to Gothic and Baroque transformations to the New Romanesque form of the 19th century. The church is a witness to the complicated history of the Lower Počernice and their relationship to the local nobility.

Welcome to the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Lower Počernice, one of the oldest and most famous monuments of Prague. You stand before a monumental temple whose history dates back to the 12th century. Its huge polite walls and elegant facade charm you at first sight.

The church was founded around 1200, when its Romanesque core was built as a spiritual centre for locals. The first written mention of the church dates back to 1360, which suggests its meaning even then. Over the centuries, the architecture of this temple has constantly evolved and adapted to new times - from goth to renaissance, baroque style to new romance. In 1887 a fundamental reconstruction was carried out in the novel style which gave the temple its present form.

Look up and notice the elegant facade with rich architectural elements. The church is built from sandstone blocks, which resembles the masonry of St. Bartholomew's church in Kiev. This material not only gives the temple solidarity and elegance, but also tells the story of its long-term resistance to time action.

Now pay attention to the key figures who have encountered this monument. Dorota Pushová was a patron of the church already in 1360 and her support could be essential for keeping it at that time. Jan of Cy, who became owner of the late 14th century, and Matej Holeka, owner in 1401, contributed to the development of the church. Since 1644, the temple has been under the administration of Rudolf Collored, which reflects its importance even for the higher social classes.

The interesting thing is that the church is located in the close vicinity of the chateau of Lower Počernice. This fact highlights its historical and cultural importance as one of the oldest monuments of Prague. It is possible that the church was built on the site of an older wooden temple, which gives its history another layer of mystery.

Let's move closer and look at the details of the church. Note the rich architecture that tells the story about changes in the Czech times. Every stone here has its own history and every angle can reveal a new secret.

Allow me to invite you to explore this fascinating place again. The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary is full of stories and mysteries waiting for its discovery. I hope this guide inspired you to further explore its history and architecture. When we meet again, perhaps at another interesting monument!
