Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie (Opočno) Church

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Opočno is an architectural marvel reflecting centuries of development, from its Gothic origins to Baroque transformation. Situated in the southeastern part of town, this Roman Catholic parish church has been a protected cultural monument since 1964. Its rich history and intricate design highlight its regional significance.

First mentioned in historical records in 1358 as a parish church, it may have been built by Hrzek and Jan z Opočna, patrons of that era. The only remaining part from this period is the sacristy, dating to around the mid-14th century. This section features Gothic cross-ribbed vaulting with figurative consoles, indicative of its architectural style at the time. An emblem featuring a hříčka figure, used by knights from Opočna, can be found on the presbytery's vault, linking it to its historical patrons.

In 1710, the church underwent significant reconstruction in Baroque style and was completed by 1714. This transformation marked a departure from its original Gothic design, featuring a narrower oblong presbytery enclosed by an ambulatory. The architecture includes a polygonal tower on the north side and a baroque sacristy on the south. Its west façade is characterized by three axes, a central risalit, and lisened frames, topped with a pediment featuring volute walls and a triangular gable. A niche in the pediment holds a statue of St. Anne Samotřetí.

Ownership transitioned over time; from the 15th century until 1588, it was held by the Novohradští z Kolovrat, who used it as a family burial site. Subsequently, the Vřesovcové also utilized it for similar purposes. A significant event in its history occurred on March 24, 1802, when a major fire caused extensive damage to the church. Repairs were made over the following two years, during which the current tower was constructed.

The interior is adorned with various artistic elements. The main altar, created in 1846, features pseudobaroque design with sculptures of St. Peter and St. Paul, alongside a 19th-century painting of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and an 18th-century statue of the Virgin Mary. Additional side altars dedicated to St. Joseph and St. Anne are styled in pseudo-Romanesque from the 19th century. The church also houses a baroque stone baptismal font from the 18th century and a memorial plaque for Šebestián and Jan Ilburk z Vřesovic, dating back to 1567 and 1596.

The church's organ history is notable as well; originally installed in 1737, it was destroyed in the 1802 fire. A replacement by Jan Matěj Guth from Čistá was completed in 1816, later modified in 1900 by Rejna a Černý of Prague, and restored again in 1995.

Today, the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary remains an active site for worship, with monthly masses held on Sundays at 10:30 AM. The area surrounding the church includes a large plot that once served as part of the parish house, now privately owned, and to the north stands an 18th-century statue of St. John Nepomucene, also protected as a cultural monument.

The church offers a unique glimpse into the region's past while continuing to serve as a vibrant center for community and faith. Its preservation ensures future generations can appreciate this remarkable site.
