Kostel Nanebevzetí Panny Marie (Postoloprty) Church

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Postoloprty is a notable Baroque church built between 1746 and 1753. Located in the town of Postoloprty within Ústecký kraj, this single-nave structure reflects the cultural and architectural influences of its era. Commissioned by Prince Josef I. Adam ze Schwarzenbergu and his wife Marie Terezie z Lichtenštejna after their son Jan Nepomuk I.'s birth, it was constructed to fulfill a vow made to God, highlighting its significance beyond architecture.

The church's origins are rooted in personal devotion and familial legacy. The foundation stone was laid on October 13, 1746, with both parents present, symbolizing their commitment to the promise they had made. This period coincided with Bohemia's cultural flourishing under Empress Maria Theresa, reflecting broader European trends where Baroque architecture thrived due to the Counter-Reformation’s influence.

Designed by Andreas Altomonte, a Viennese architect of Italian descent, the church replaced an older parish church that no longer met capacity needs and had fallen into disrepair. The new structure drew inspiration from a similar building in Groß-Siegharts, Austria, evident in its architectural elements such as the façade with a tower and non-traditional orientation. The altar faces south while the tower and entrance are aligned perpendicularly to the square, showcasing an innovative design approach for that era.

The church's interior is adorned with intricate stucco decorations crafted by Viennese artisans, featuring volutes and cornices that enhance its Baroque aesthetic. It houses five altars: one main altar and four side altars. The centerpiece of the main altar is a painting depicting the Assumption of the Virgin Mary, created by Michelangelo Unterberger in 1753 for which he was compensated with 600 Rhenish guilders. Other notable artworks include paintings by Johann Brändler on one of the side altars and depictions of Prince Josef I., Marie Terezie, and their son Jan.

Throughout its history, the church has undergone several enhancements to preserve its artistic and architectural integrity. In 1933, it was fitted with new stained glass windows depicting scenes from the lives of Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary, funded by local contributions. The original organ, crafted in 1752 by Christoph Panzer from Vienna, was replaced in 1932 by a pneumatic three-manual instrument made by Ladislav Hausner from Teplice.

The church's significance extends beyond its architectural beauty; it serves as a cultural and historical landmark within the community of Postoloprty. Its consecration on October 17, 1943, by Bishop Antonín Alois Weber marked another pivotal moment in its history.
