The church of the birth of the Virgin Mary in Kotouni, the local part of the village of Oselce in southern Plzeň, is an example of long development from goth to Baroque. The church is documented already in the middle of the 14th century, when it was a small Gothic building, which was supposed to be slightly lower than the surrounding terrain. Over time, it was expanded until a fundamental change occurred in the early 18th century.

In 1704-1705 it was rebuilt by Italian builder Antonio de Maggio into the highest Baroque form we see today. In 1730 the church burned down and had to be repaired. In 1784 the oratory was added and its eastern facade was modified. Bigger repairs took place in the 20th century in 1915-1934. The interior is decorated with images from the life of the Virgin Mary.

Next to the church there is a bell tower from 1696 and an old cemetery. A set of these structures creates a unified landscape that demonstrates how the medieval Gothic core gradually disappeared in late Baroque forms.

But what is most fascinated is what is hidden underground. Under the floor of the church there is a large skeleton and crypt. The church served long-term as a burial place for nobles from the surroundings, especially the Janovský family from Janovice in Oselce, which was the patron of the church. A total of 56 people were buried under the floor. When the church was extended to its present Baroque form, the surrounding burial ground was disturbed, and the remains were transferred to the skeleton. Around the middle of the 18th century, the bones were neatly stacked to a height of 180-200 centimetres. It is assumed that there are approximately 20 cubic metres of bones in the skeleton.

The entrance space of the skeleton served as a chapel for memorial services for members of the Boos-WalDeck family who are buried in separate parts of the chapel. In eight coffins (one of which is children) lies his members - the first here was buried in 1887, the last in 1917. The crypt skeletons are not accessible to the public today and remain hidden beneath the surface, hiding the secrets of centuries.
