The Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary in Protivanov is a Roman Catholic church dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. Situated in the village of Protivanov within Olomoucký kraj, this neoclassical structure serves as the parish church for the local community and holds the status of a protected cultural monument. Its history dates back to the first half of the 16th century when an earlier church was established but destroyed by fire in 1711. The current building, constructed in 1772, reflects the neoclassical architectural style that emerged during a period of renewed Catholic influence under Habsburg rule following the Counter-Reformation.

The original church's construction occurred during a time when Bohemia was part of the Holy Roman Empire and experienced significant religious upheaval due to the Protestant Reformation. By the late 18th century, when the neoclassical church was built, the region had come under Habsburg control, which saw a resurgence of Catholic influence following the Counter-Reformation. This historical context underscores the church's significance as part of the broader narrative of religious and political shifts in Central Europe.

Architecturally, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary underwent several transformations. After its destruction by fire in 1711, it was rebuilt in a neoclassical style in 1772. This architectural phase marked a departure from earlier styles, reflecting the aesthetic preferences and religious sentiments of the time. In 1905, the church's tower was replaced due to structural concerns, further altering its appearance. Restoration efforts between 1984 and 1992 ensured the preservation of this historical monument for future generations.

The interior is adorned with several notable features. The main altar dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary dates back to 1894, showcasing the artistic craftsmanship of that period. Additionally, two side altars are present: one dedicated to Our Lady of Sorrows and another to Our Lady of Lourdes. A pulpit from 1888 adds to the church's historical ambiance. The interior also includes a baptismal font and sculptures of Saints Cyril and Methodius, both dating to 1863. Outside, a bell tower houses a bell crafted in 1772 by Jan Adam Heckelmann, a renowned bell maker from Mikulov.

Today, the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary stands as a testament to its rich history and architectural evolution. It remains accessible to visitors who wish to explore its historical significance and appreciate its artistic elements. The church's status as a cultural monument ensures its preservation, making it an important site for those interested in religious architecture and local history.

Visiting the Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary offers a unique opportunity to connect with the past and understand the cultural heritage of Protivanov. Its historical significance, combined with its architectural beauty, makes it a worthwhile destination for anyone interested in exploring Central European history and religious art.

The original church probably dated from the first half of the sixteenth century. In seventeen eleven, it burned down. A new church in classicist style was completed in seventeen seventy-two. One is dedicated to the Virgin Mary of Sorrows, the other to Our Lady of Lourdes. The pulpit dates from eighteen eighty-eight. The baptismal font and the statues of Saint Cyril and Methodius are somewhat older, created in eighteen sixty-three. In the side of the church is a sacristy.

On the tower is preserved a bell from seventeen seventy-two, the same year the new church was completed. It is the work of the bell founder Jan Adam Heckelmann from Mikulov.
