Kostel Nejsvětějšího Srdce Ježíšova v Horním Maxově Church
The Church of the Holy Heart of Jesus is a neo-gothic sacral building that dominates the village of Horní Maxov. Its appearance and rich interior decoration are valuable examples of sacral architecture in the early twentieth century.
The idea of our own parish church was born in the movement of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The inhabitants wanted to build their own temple in the village and for this purpose they created a association dedicated to construction. Their goal was achieved with ten years of delay. The building was entrusted to the builder Josef Turnwald. 1910 brought the long-awaited completion of the church, which cost 91,000 crowns.
Since 1999 there have been successive and extensive repairs in the temple. They included reconstruction of the roof in 2006, during which the original shale cover was replaced with copper sheet. The facade, stained windows and other parts of the construction are gradually repaired.
The construction consists of a one-boat rectangular plan with a tower on the north side and a hall in the facade. The ship has a flat ceiling, the presbytery is glazed with a cross vault. The interior decoration is pseudo-gothic, its author is the famous fredlant carver Josef Klindermann.
The main altar is dedicated to the Holy Heart of the Lord and contains a box with the remains of Saint Benedict and Saint Verecunda. Its parts include the woodcuts of the worship of shepherds and the deposit of the dead Christ, as well as the sculptures of St. Peter and St. Paul. The side altar with the painting of the Virgin Mary and Jesus in his arms was consecrated on 22 March 1926 by the chateau bishop Karl Kaspar. The tower adorns the clock on all four sides. In the temple there is also a glass chandelier, which is evidence of the masterwork of glassmakers from the region.
The church bells have a remarkable destiny. Their consecration took place on 2 August and 1 November 1910 by Bishop Josef Gross. But the first bells were not preserved - they were melted during the First World War. The new set that was donated to Mr Schöler from Josefov's Mine was consecrated on October 4, 1925. These men later recited for military purposes during World War II. Today you can hear the bells installed during the restaurant between 1999 and 2006, which line daily at noon and at 18 o'clock.

The Neo-Gothic Church of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus is the dominant feature of the sub-mountain village of Horní Maxov. It is a Roman Catholic branch church, that is a church which does not have its own parish.
The inhabitants of Horní Maxov had desired their own church already at the turn of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. For this reason they founded a society for its construction, but they achieved their goal only about ten years later. They entrusted the construction to builder Josef Turnwald and in the year 1910 the church was completed. It cost ninety-one thousand crowns.
It is a single-nave rectangular structure. On the northern side stands a tower, and in the front facade is a vestibule. The tower is positioned off the main axis of the building and on all four sides it has clocks. The nave has a flat ceiling, and the presbytery, that is the space around the main altar, is vaulted with a cross vault.
The interior furnishings are pseudo-Gothic. The decoration was created by the renowned Frýdlant wood carver Josef Klindermann. The main altar is dedicated to the Most Sacred Heart of the Lord. On it is a reliquary with the remains of Saint Benedict and Saint Verekunda and it is adorned with sculptures of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. In the church are also wooden reliefs of the Adoration of the Shepherds and the Entombment of Christ. The side altar with a statue of the Virgin Mary with the Christ Child was consecrated on the twenty-second of March in 1926 by the Prague bishop Karel Kašpar. A large glass chandelier attests to the craftsmanship of the glassmakers of this region.
The bells had a turbulent history. The first bells were consecrated by the Litoměřice bishop Josef Gross on the second of August and the first of November in 1910. During the First World War, however, they were melted down. A new set was donated by the couple Schölers from Josefův Důl and was consecrated on the fourth of October in 1925. These bells too were not preserved, as they were confiscated again for military purposes. The church today has new bells which ring out over Maxov every day at noon and at six o'clock in the evening.
Since the year 1999 the church has undergone extensive repairs. In the year 2006 the reconstruction of the greater part of the roof was completed. The original slate roofing was thereby replaced with copper sheet metal. The facade, the stained glass windows and other parts of the building are gradually being repaired.
