Kostel Neposkvrněného Početí Panny Marie (Staré Město) Church

The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary, located in the Old Town in the district of Bruntál in Moravia, is a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. This fortified filial church was probably built in the second quarter of the 13th century and is remarkable by its historical architecture, which underwent several reconstructions from Romanesque to Baroque style. It is located in the middle of a historically fortified place, which underlines its strategic importance during the Middle Ages.

The history of the church dates back to 1377, when Staré Město was first mentioned in writing. The original Romanesque building of the fortified church was built between 1240 and 1260, as confirmed by archaeological findings. In the 15th century there was a Gothic reconstruction, which left behind elements such as a five-sided end of the priesthood and a six-beam vault with stone reliefs. The first Baroque arrangements of the church were made before 1655, while a significant Baroque reconstruction took place in 1787. This reconstruction involved an increase in the ship and encapsulated by an overarching vault with sections, resulting in a shift of the priesthood closer to the ship.

Architecturally, the church is a one-ship brick building from the first third of the 13th century with Gothic and Baroque elements. The original portal and Gothic paintings, dating back to the period of Master Theodoric, were preserved in the interior. The frescos were discovered under the lime layer in 1994 and subsequently restored in 2008. The church has a two-storey tower with onion-shaped beating, which is open to lantern.

The church is managed by the Roman Catholic parish Bruntál and the Czech province of the Order of Brothers of the House of the Virgin Mary in Jerusalem. The church underwent several modifications, especially in 1902, when the new organ was installed and the painting of the interior was done. In 2008 he received financial support for the reconstruction of the fresco.

An interesting thing about the church is the discovery of the remains of the quadratic side chapel with the sanctunarium and the tomb with the sarcophagus, which were discovered during archaeological surveys in the years 2002-2003. These findings provide a valuable insight into the history of the site.
