The parish kostel Povýšení svatého Kříže v Černovicích near Tábor is a Baroque building with Gothic foundations, standing on Mariánska Square. Together with the self-standing bell tower and the column with Madonna, a protected set of cultural monuments is still used as a parish temple of the local community.

The first written mention of the church dates back to the end of the 14th century. In 1457 the temple witnessed a dramatic historical event: in the invasion of the army Zdeněk of Šternberk, the locals hid in it and tried to defend themselves. In the early New Testament, during the administration of Martin Jindřich Paradise of Eschaide, the church was restored - a new temple founded before 1668 later burned down and requested baroque reconstruction. The decisive transformation took place in 1737 under the leadership of Jan Maximilian Kinský. In 1796 a new disaster hit the temple when the fire damaged both the church itself and the neighbouring bell tower. Over time, his status changed - from the Philistine temple of Dobešov in 1490, he became a parish church to be promoted to the dean's church in 1824.

Architecture reflects the long development of the construction. It is a one-ship rectangular structure without ornaments, supplemented by a rectangular presbytery, oratory and sacristy, reinforced by supporting pillars. The facade is ended with a triangular volt shield with Lizenas; He carries the coat of arms over the entrance. The side walls have three segment windows. The interior is divided by the combined pilasters with the Ionian header, on which lies a rolling vault with lunettes. The presbytery separates the triumphant arch from the ship and is encapsulated by the vault. There's a circle above the entrance. The ceiling frescoes from Kutnohorsky painter Jan Vychek from 1898 are particularly valuable, which still remain in original form without restoration.

The stand-alone bell tower has a Gothic structure at its core. Today's appearance dates back to 1857, when after the fire, the baroque poppy-shaped pit was replaced by a pseudosloh jehlanovsky roof. The tower is decorated with two coats of arms - the Paradise of Eschaide and the Schönburg husbands who were involved in the reconstruction of the building. Three bells from 1926 are placed in the bell tower; The clock machine and the clock dial dates back to 1941.

The inner equipment of the temple speaks of his theological and artistic wealth. The main altar is a Neo-Renaissance building from 1882 with an altar painting of the Ascension of the Holy Cross by A. Bayer from 1809. The side altars dedicated to St. Anne and St. Barbara come from the mid-18th century. The decoration is supplemented by three paintings from the local chaplain Bedřich Kamarít. The most valuable pieces include the late Gothic wooden statue of the Virgin Mary from the beginning of the 16th century, which was transferred from Dobeš. In the interior there is also a stone baptist from the 16th century and a tombstone from 1721.

The Church of the Elevation of the Holy Cross is an important cultural monument not only for Černovice, but for the whole Tábor. Its architectural development from goth to Baroque to later times, combined with rich interior decoration and rich historical contexts, makes it a remarkable place for visitors as well as people interested in history and art.

For kids

Imagine going back to when Černovice was a small town surrounded by trees and fields. The Church of the Ascension of the Holy Cross stood where it stands today, but it looked completely different. It was originally a Gothic church that was built before the first steps on the ground.

Here lived people who lived in harmony with nature and who tried to be good Christians. The church was their sanctuary, where worship and wedding ceremonies were held. At least that's what it looked like until the Baroque reconstruction was lost in the 18th century.
