Kostel svaté Kateřiny is located in the part of the municipality of Svatý Mikuláš in Kutná Hora district. It is a single-boat oriented sacral building with a Gothic core and baroque adaptations, which is registered as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic. It belongs to a rare group of medieval churches with a chorus tower above a rectangular presbytery, the origin of which is linked to the activity of the tanker order.

According to some sources, the church was founded in 1307 by the sedentary tankers, which was reflected in the name of the village, which grew here after the forest was eradicated. But historical records suggest that founding may be more likely from the end of the 13th century. This corresponds to the strength of the construction, especially a massive tower with shooting windows. At the time the church was founded, the Cisteriac Order played an important role in social and cultural life.

Architecturally, the church is a one-ship building with an entrance south front and narrower square presbytery. Above the presbytery there is a massive prism tower with a needle roof covered with shale, while the saddle roof of the ship is covered with eternity. The facades are smooth and undecorated, separated only by windows. In the western shield facade and in the sides of the ship there are baroque rectangular windows with a semicircular enchantment. The north and east walls of the presbytery contain sharp narrow Gothic windows in deep shells. The tower has shooting windows on the first and second floors and simple square window openings on the last floor.

The inner space consists of a ship with dimensions 11 to 13 metres and a presbytery with a length of sides of approximately 5.3 metres. The masonry of the ship is 1.2 to 1.3 metres thick, while the presbytery is wider, approximately 1.5 metres thick. A boat with a false beam ceiling and a wooden circle separates a sharp triumphant arch from the priesthood. The presbytery has an elevated cross vault with wedge ribs on simple consoles that converge into the target terminal. The main altar of the portal type comes from the second half of the 17th century and contains pictures of the Engaging of St. Catherine and St. Martin. From the same time are the paintings of the Madonna with the tanker saint and Calvary.

The church has undergone several modifications over the centuries. In 1680, the Baroque reconstruction took place, where the windows in the ship and the south window of the priesthood were created. In 1842 the original wooden ceiling was replaced with reed. In 1868, the tower was repaired and increased and, in subsequent modifications in 1870, a memorial note was deposited in the tower tower. The church was newly covered in 1881 and its present form was acquired in 1892. In the second half of the 20th century, the object was replica.

Two bells are mentioned in the tower, one from 1596 from the bell tower Tomáš from Kutná Hora and the other from 1763, which was taken by the priest Karel Hein. The ring contains an organ from Prague's company Josef Rejn and Josef Černý, which have one manual with ten registers.

Kostel svaté Kateřiny represents a valuable example of the connection of the Gothic core with baroque and later modifications from the end of the 19th century. It is an important witness to the history of the tanker code in this area. The building is worth visiting for interested people in historical sacral architecture.

Welcome to St. Catherine's Church. Right now, you're standing in front of a building that holds the secrets of centuries and a silent testimony of faith and the dangers that people have faced in this area. Feel the atmosphere of this place and look at the facade of the building that welcomes you now. In front of you is a single-boat oriented sacral structure whose appearance is the result of a long process of transformation. The first impression may be calm, but if you look closely, you will see traces of different epoch in the building lines that intersect with time.

Let us now return together in time to make it clearer how this building was created and why it is standing here at all. The history of this church begins in 1307. Imagine the landscape over 700 years ago when the cisterns of Sedlka were the founders of this temple. At that time, this order was one of the most influential in Europe and its presence here left a deep mark. The church was founded as a spiritual centre which was intended to serve local residents and travellers. Today, it is one of the cultural monuments of the Czech Republic and serves as a filial church of the parish Záborí nad Labem, which means that it is a separate building, but it is connected in both administrative and spiritual terms to a nearby parish centre.

Now pay attention to the architecture itself, because it contains the most interesting details. If you look at the overall composition, you'll notice that the church has a Gothic core. Gothic is a style that was directed towards heaven, to light and to nobility. However, time did not stand and in 1680 the church passed through extensive baroque adaptations. The Baroque has brought new dynamics, decoration and feeling of saturation into architecture, which you can see in the actual appearance of the building.

Please look up and focus your attention on one of the most distinctive properties of this temple. See that tower? It's not just a bell tower. It's the so-called choir tower that's located directly above the right-angled presbyterium, which is above the space where the altar is located. This architectural element is very rare. There are only a few medieval churches in our landscapes and their origin is closely linked to the activity of the cisternal order. It's basically the signature of these monks in stone, which today tells us about their influence and how they built their shrine.

If you go around the building, notice its general character. You might think the church looks like a small fortress. and it's not just your feeling. The construction is really strong. It's most obvious on a massive tower. If you look at her walls, you'll see shooting windows. These narrow windows were not designed primarily to illuminate the interior, but they were used for defence. In times of instability, the church had to serve not only as a place of prayer, but as a safe haven for the locals who could hide here in the event of an attack. It's fascinating to think that one and the same building combined the absolute room of prayer with the readiness to fight back.

Let us now, in spirit, enter the church space and think about what awaits us inside. Even though we see massive walls from the outside, there have been other changes inside. In 1842 there was a major adjustment of the ceiling. The original wooden ceiling was replaced with reed. This change was common at the time, the reed was available material while providing sufficient insulation and stability.

The key point of the interior is the main altar, which dates back to the second half of the seventeenth century. It's the peak of the Baroque period in this church. The altar is not only a religious element, but also an artistic work. It contains images that tell the story of the engagement of St. Catherine, who is the patron saint of this temple. Saint Catherine was known for her wisdom and courage, and her image here reminds visitors of the values that this church has represented for centuries.

If we move forward in time, we'll stop in 1870. It is this year that something has happened that is very valuable to historians. The commemorative charter was deposited in the tower. It's a message from the past, a time capsule that was supposed to inform future generations about the state of the church and the events that took place at that time. It is a beautiful symbol of continuity, the connection of the nineteenth century people to us who are standing here today.

The interesting thing that may interest you is the rare beauty of the choir tower. As I mentioned, it connects us to a whole network of tanker buildings. The cistercians were masters in the organization of space and in the efficient use of materials. The survival of such buildings is a great happiness these days. So when you look at this tower, don't just look at it as part of the building, but as a rare architectural code that connects us to the entire medieval Europe.

Now that you know the story of this place, I suggest a few moments of silence. Try to imagine how these walls heard the sounds of Latin Tannery Prayers, how the fragrance of scented scrolls floated in the baroque era, and how people sought refuge behind those massive walls with narrow shooting sites. Kostel svaté Kateřiny is not just a pile of stone and mortar, it is a living archive of human destiny, faith and the need for safety.

Notice again the harmony between the Gothic foundation and the baroque face. It's like a conversation of two different centuries going on in total peace. This church shows us that nothing is static and that even the shrine develops along with the people who surround it.

Imagine how many generations of people have walked through that door. How many children were celebrated here, how many goings-on and how many people sought comfort in these walls in the difficult times of their lives. All these stories are embedded in these walls, even though the names of particular people remain forgotten.

Now I say goodbye to you and leave you with this beautiful memory. I suggest you now walk around the church from each side, touch its walls, and maybe try to look for those shooting windows in the tower we talked about. Feel how massive this building is and how powerful it holds the history of St. Nicholas and its surroundings.

I hope this short trip to history has helped you see St. Catherine's church in a new light. I wish you a pleasant continuation of your journey and many other discoveries in our beautiful landscapes. Goodbye.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit St. Also take an umbrella or raincoat in case of unfavourable weather, a bottle of water and possibly a printed or digital guide about the history of the construction.\ n\ n For photography, the most interesting places are the inner column with gothic arches and windows where the sun rays create a colored light game. The exterior offers a beautiful view of the tower and surrounding landscape, especially at sunset. When taking pictures, note that the inner spaces are protected and the ban on the use of lightning must be respected.\ n\ n Families with children will appreciate a spacious church yard where children can run around freely and the possibility of participating in interactive tours if available. There is no specific location in the area, but we recommend exploring the village Svatý Mikuláš and its peaceful atmosphere.

Seasonal recommendations

In the spring the church will surround the awakening nature and fresh green, which creates a gentle contrast with the historical stone. Soft spring light is ideal for observing facade details without sharp shadows. We recommend to dress in layered clothes so that you don't be surprised by the variable weather, and visit the memory in the morning when the air is the cleanest.

The summer season brings sharp sun and rich green trees that provide a pleasant shade around the building. The atmosphere is full of energy, but accompanied by the biggest influx of visitors in the season. It is advisable to come right after opening to avoid crowds and heat, and choose light, airy clothes.

In autumn, the surroundings of the monument turn into golden tones and morning fog gives the place a mysterious, melancholy mood. The walks are pleasant thanks to milder temperatures and a quieter pace. It is practical to wear moisture resistant shoes and visit in late afternoon hours when the sun hits a low angle and highlights the texture of buildings.

In winter, the church is still and still, especially if the landscape is covered with snow. Light is shielded and short days create an intimate atmosphere, especially in advent time.
