Kostel svatého Archanděla Michaela (Dolní Rokytnice) Church
St. Michael's Church, the archangel stands in Rokytnice nad Jizerou and represents an interesting case of relayering several epoch of Czech religious history. In previous centuries there was a wooden evangelical temple, which existed here since 1598. After the Thirty Years' War, when the Papal Church was taking back its positions, this church was converted to stone between 1646 and 1657 in the framework of Jesuit reCatholisation.
But the present Baroque temple dates back to the mid-18th century. In 1752, Arnošt Quido Harrach issued a decree to build a new church. The ceremonial laying of the base stone took place on 24 May 1753. The construction progressed quite quickly - already in 1756 the priest Kramář served the first service, although the church was not quite finished. It was only in 1759 when it was consecrated.
It's a one-ship Baroque-style building with three-arm bark. The foundation is made of large stones, the roof is covered with shingles. The interior is decorated with three altars: the main altar carries a painting by Dominic Kindermann called "The Fall of Angels" and the inscription "Who is like God," which depicts St. Michael himself. The left side altar dedicated to St. Felix, the true one to Pope Pius V. The Inventor of the church was partially preserved from the Baroque era - the only later remains are the glass chandelier from 1840 and the neo-gothic vitrates placed in the presbytery during the general reconstruction in 1880.
The church's musical equipment also has a story. The original organ was built in 1785 by František Pavel Horák. Since today, only organ cabinets have been preserved, in which Josef Kobrle installed a new two-manual tool, which is still playing here. There are also two historical bells in the church. The oldest is Saint Michael from 1638, who was named Kryštof Harant z Polžic a Bezdružic until 1725. The second, the middle bell, dates back to 1739.
The last major repairs were made in the 1990s. To this day, the temple serves as a parish church for believers and offers visitors an opportunity to learn how Czech architecture and religious life changed and evolved over the centuries.

The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel is a Roman Catholic parish church in Rokytnice nad Jizerou. Its history dates back to the end of the 16th century.
From 1598, a wooden Protestant church stood in Rokytnice. Between 1646 and 1657, it was rebuilt as a stone church as part of the Jesuit recatholicization. The present building was constructed a hundred years later. In 1752, Ernest Guido Harrach issued a decree for the construction of the church, and on May 24, 1753, the foundation stone was laid. Priest Kramář held the first service there already in 1756, even though the church was not yet finished. It was completed and consecrated in 1759. A general reconstruction took place in 1880, with the latest repairs in the nineteen nineties.
It is a single-nave Baroque church with a three-armed gallery. Its foundation is made of large stones and the roof is shingled. Hanging on the main altar is a painting of the Fall of the Angels by Dominik Kindermann. It depicts Saint Michael and bears the inscription "Who is like God". The painting on the left side altar represents Saint Felix, on the right is Pope Pius the Fifth. Most of the furnishings date from the 18th century. Newer is a glass chandelier from 1840 and stained glass windows in the presbytery, which were added in 1880.
The original organ was built by František Pavel Horák in 1785. Only the organ case has survived from it, in which stands a two-manual instrument by Josef Kobrle from 1904.
The church also has bells. The oldest of them, the bell of Saint Michael, dates from 1638 and until 1725 bore the name Christopher Harant of Polžice and Bezdružice. The middle bell is from 1739 and the small bell is from 1866.

For the best experience we recommend a visit to St. Michael's Church during bright days, when natural light best highlights the Baroque details of the interior. Ideal is to choose time outside the main religious ceremonies to ensure a quiet atmosphere for the observation of architecture.
The monument can also be transported by car through public transport.
The most suitable moments for photo lovers are when light hits the church windows, creating interesting shadows and highlighting historical elements. However, before taking pictures yourself, make sure that the shooting area is allowed.
For families with children, the church is a suitable place for a peaceful observation of history if silent mode is followed. There are no other specific monuments in the immediate vicinity, so it is recommended to devote all attention to the object itself and its spiritual history.
When visiting, take with you mainly peace and respect for the sacral character of the place. It is advisable to prepare for a short tour which will allow you to appreciate the architecture created in the middle of the 18th century on the basis of Count Harracha's decree.
