Kostel svatého Bartoloměje a Panny Marie Montserratské Church

The Church of Saint Bartholomew and Our Lady of Montserrat in Doksy is a notable example of Baroque architecture located near Mácha Lake. Built around 1638 on the site of an older wooden chapel, it has seen numerous expansions and renovations over time. It includes annexes for sacristies and oratories, with chapels added in 1748 and 1754 dedicated to Saint Barbara and the Holy Cross, respectively. The tower was heightened in 1832, contributing to its striking silhouette. Inside, visitors can admire Baroque sculptures and a late 17th-century altarpiece, including a notable copy of the Black Madonna, enhancing the church’s spiritual and artistic allure.

Bernard Canevalle is buried within it, marked by a memorial plaque, signifying his lasting connection to this sacred site. The Black Madonna, originally venerated by Spanish Montserratine Benedictines, was moved here in 1786 after their monastery on Bezděz was dissolved, adding historical significance.

A cemetery once existed adjacent to it until its closure in 1816 when it was relocated outside town limits, leading to residential development on the former site. The interior is adorned with Baroque sculptures of the Virgin Mary, Saint Bartholomew, and John the Baptist. Its main altar features a late 17th-century copy of the Black Madonna, known as the "Black Madonna," originally venerated at Bezděz. The church also houses valuable paintings and sculptures, including an image of Saint Bartholomew by Jan Hickel from 1725.
