The church of St. Bartholomew is located on the village Vráže in district Beroun. It is originally a Gothic building, which represents an interesting example of rural costal architecture in the region. The building has been registered as a protected cultural monument since 1958.

The beginnings of the church go deep into the past. It is believed to have been built in the place of an older church from the 10th century. Its existence in the late Middle Ages is confirmed by the visitation acts of the Prague Archbishop of 1380, when the church first mentions itself in written sources. Originally, the church fell under the parish of Karlstejn. Over time it went into the administration of the parish of Beroun.

The construction gradually developed according to the needs of the time. In the 17th century, a Baroque tombstone was created on the north side, dated 1686. In the early 19th century, in 1822, there was the first recorded modification. More substantial reconstructions followed in the early 20th century - in the years 1909 to 1910, the construction was redesigned. It was in 1909 that the tower was fitted with clocks that became a visible element of the skeleton. The latest major reconstruction was completed in 1992.

It is an architectural construction of a rectangular plan with a presbytery and sacristy, situated on a height in the area of the former cemetery. The most characteristic element is a massive prism tower with a chisel roof, located in front of the western front. The facades of the church are simple and smooth, revived only by a profiled crown ledge.

In the south wall of the ship there is a single glass window in the deep shale that enters the church. On the contrary, the north wall lacks windows. There's another window to the presbytery in a deep pantry. The inner space reflects the Gothic origin of the building - the ship has a flat ceiling, while the presbytery is encapsulated by a massive rib arch. The roof is valbic. The interior of the church is decorated with an altar equipped with two paintings from the middle of the 18th century: The Torture of St. Bartholomew and the Holy Family.

Today the church is an active sacral object. Public services are held every Saturday at 6 p.m. Outside of the service, the church remains closed to the public, yet it deserves the attention of those interested in Czech kostal architecture and rural cultural heritage.

The Church of Saint Bartholomew stands on the village green in Vrází on the Beroun region. It is originally a Gothic building. The first written mention of it comes from 1380, when it appears in the visitation records of the Prague archbishopric. It is said to have been built on the site of an older church from the 10th century.

The church stands on an elevated area where a cemetery was once located. On its northern side, a Baroque tombstone from 1686 has been preserved. The building underwent modifications in 1822 and again between 1909 and 1910. Since 1958 it has been a protected cultural monument and was last reconstructed in 1992. Originally the church belonged to the Karlštejn parish, today it is part of the Beroun parish.

It is a single-nave building with a rectangular floor plan, a presbytery and a sacristy. The most striking feature is a sturdy prismatic tower with a hipped roof that stands before the western façade. Since 1909 it has a clock. The façades are smooth and decorated only with a profiled cornice. The church has a hipped roof.

In the southern wall of the nave there is a single pointed arch window set deep in the wall. The main entrance is also on this side. The northern wall has no windows. Another window set deep in the wall leads to the presbytery.

The nave has a flat ceiling, while the presbytery is vaulted with a cross rib vault. The altar is decorated with two paintings from the mid-18th century, the Martyrdom of Saint Bartholomew and the Holy Family.

Tips for visitors

Best time to visit St. Bartholomew's church in Vráži is the morning of the week, where it is quiet and the possibility to see the interior without crowds. The sunny morning clock also creates a pleasant light for photography, especially in presbytery and at the main altar. If you prefer fewer tourists, avoid Saturdays and do not share when the church is often visited by locals.

It is recommended to arrive by car as public transport to Vráže is not very common. The current connection from Berouna or other nearby cities can be found in the traffic search engine.

When visiting, wear comfortable clothes and shoes, as the church is standing on the height of the former cemetery and the journey here is slightly steep. In winter bring warmer clothes because the church has no heating.

Photography is permitted, but the most beautiful pictures can be taken from the outside by the prism tower with clock, where there is an interesting contrast between Gothic architecture and modern clock. In the interior, the best light is at the window openings in the presbytery, where the sunlight hits and emphasizes detailed stone work. Know that during services or private events photography can be restricted.

Within a 30-minute drive from St. Bartholomew's Church, it is worth visiting Karlstejn Chateau, which in the past was a parish centre for Vrážany. In BerounA, about ten kilometers from Vráže, visit the historic centre with city hall and other protected houses that offer an attractive atmosphere of the old town.

It is advisable for families with children to visit Karlstejn Chateau where children can explore medieval architecture and legends associated with its history. In the vicinity of the church there is also the possibility of short walks along the surrounding fields and forests, which can be interesting for children. In Beroun you will find small museums or playgrounds where children can relax and have fun.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring Spring in the church of St. Bartholomew offers a unique atmosphere where the sun's rays penetrate glass windows and illuminate the interior with golden light. Outside, nature is awakening - spring flowers are blooming around the church, often complementary to the historical picturesque of the place. The interior of the church then radiates a calm, but also reviving energy, as if centuries of the past were meeting with a new beginning. Practical advice: In spring months, the attendance rate is lower than in summer, but the weather may be unpredictable - light clothing is recommended with cover. The best time to visit is in the morning when the church is still clean and the light in the interior is the most beautiful.

Summer In the summer months, the church of St. Bartholomew comes to life with sunlight, which comes from stained glass and creates playful shadows on the stone walls. The surrounding area consists of green meadows and trees that provide a pleasant shade while walking around. The atmosphere is lively but calm - ideal for relaxation between historical walls. However, larger crowds are expected in the main summer season, so it is advisable to come before more visitors start to gather. Dress lightly, but with the possibility of cooling, and don't forget the sunscreen.

Autumn The autumn visit of the church brings a magical atmosphere where the sun shines down and its rays illuminate the interior with a more visible but delicate light than in summer. Outside, leaves on trees turn into golden and red shades that are reflected in church windows. Then the interior radiates a quiet sense of seriousness as if time stood there. Practical advice: less traffic is expected in November than in the summer months, but the weather can be cold and rainy. Warmer clothes and possibly umbrella are recommended. The best time to visit is this afternoon when there are fewer people out there and the light in the church is the most distinctive.

Winter The winter visit to the church of St. Bartholomew offers a calm, almost meditative atmosphere, where the light from the stained glass creates fine silver shades on the stone walls. There is then a silence outside, which is only occasionally disturbed by the rustling of snow or by the walking step of people. In advent time, the interior seems even more illuminated, as if the shadows of the past meet with the expectations of the new year. Practical advice: In winter the church is shortened, so it is advisable to check the current times in advance. Dress warm, but movement in the interior is also suitable for shorter visits. The best time is early in the morning, when there's still light out and the crowds are minimal.
