In the heart of the Prague village Nebušice stands the parish church of St. Cyril and Methodius, built in 1885-1886. It originated as a Roman Catholic temple in the New Romanesque style and corresponds to an increasing number of believers, which were not yet sufficient capacity of St. John Nepomuk's church in Dejvice. The village has been attached for centuries to this very temple and partly to Liboc.

The idea of the building was initiated by the Strahov Abbot Vojtěch Hron, who did not see the construction - he died in 1879. Project plans were signed by builder Jaroslav Kuchta. The foundation stone was laid on April 6, 1885, on the anniversary of the death of St. Methodius, one of the patrons of the temple. The Strahov Abbot Zikmund Antonín Old took him in the presence of the Shareč priest Erasmus Marc. In 1886 the church was completed and consecrated. The parish was established by transfer from the church of St. John Nepomuk, which still lies in the parish area.

The temple is a one-ship construction of dimensions 27,8 × 10,19 meters. The dominance is a four-sided tower 38 meters high on the west front with a needle point surrounded by four corner towers. In 1886 two bells were placed in the tower from the workshop Arnešta DěProbel and the clock tower from Louis Heinz. The main entrance leads from the south, adjacent from the west, third allows entry into the sacristy.

The interior of the temple has a uniform neo-gothic character. The pulpit, three altars and statues come from the workshop of the Prague carver Josef Krejčík. The main altar has a retabile with four sculptures: in the middle of St. Methodius in the bishop's garment and St. Cyril in the monk's room with the Old Slavic Bible, on the sides of St. Zikmund in the Burgundy garment and St. Vojtěch in the Casual, the patrons chosen to honor the chateau's founders. The left side altar of St. Norbert carries a statue of a saint with a monster, the right one is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The baptism is red marble. On the victory arch is the sign of the Strahov monastery by painter Jan Heřman. The organ planted in 1886 was created by the organist Karel Schiffner. The parish building from 1887 stands right next to the temple.

Visiting the temple can be seen as a meeting with two layers of history - Slavic scientists dedicated to it, and with the initiative of the Strahov monastery, which recognized the changing spiritual needs of the growing suburb. The church has preserved its harmonious appearance and unique character until today.

The Church of Saint Cyril and Methodius stands in the middle of Nebušice, today part of Prague. It is a parish church and it was built in the years eighteen eighty-five to eighteen eighty-six.

Nebušice fell under the spiritual administration of Strahov Monastery and until the nineteenth century they belonged to the Church of Saint John of Nepomuc in Šárka, and a smaller part to Liboc. But the number of parishioners was growing, the churches were not sufficient and a priest had to come from elsewhere. It was Strahov Abbot Vojtěch Hron who prompted the construction of a church in Nebušice. He did not live to see the building completed, he died in the year eighteen seventy-nine. The plans were signed by builder Jaroslav Kuchta.

The foundation stone was laid on April sixth, eighteen eighty-five, on the anniversary of the death of Saint Methodius. It was blessed by Strahov Abbot Zikmund Antonín Starý. In the same year a cemetery was also established. Construction proceeded quickly and in the year eighteen eighty-six the church was completed and consecrated. A new parish was created by transferring from the Church of Saint John of Nepomuc, which still stands on its territory today. The first spiritual administrator was Sarkander Josef Zedníček. The rectory next to the church dates from the year eighteen eighty-seven. Since September two thousand eight, the parishes of Horoměřice also belong to the Nebušice parish.

The church is single-nave, in Romanesque Revival style, almost twenty-eight meters long and approximately ten meters wide. On the western side rises a slender square tower thirty-eight meters high. Its pyramidal spire is surrounded by four corner turrets. In the bell chamber, two bells by Prague bellfounder Arnošt Děpold were hung in the year eighteen eighty-six. The original tower clock was supplied by Prague clockmaker Ludvík Heinz. Above the presbytery there is still a small sanctus turret in the roof for a smaller bell.

The interior has unified neo-Gothic wooden furnishings, painted in colours and gilded. The pulpit, three altars and sculptures were carved by Prague sculptor Josef Krejčík. In the middle of the main altar stand the patrons of the church. Saint Methodius in bishop's vestments blesses and holds a mission cross, Saint Cyril in monastic robes holds an Old Church Slavonic bible. On the sides are Saint Zikmund and Saint Vojtěch, chosen in honour of both abbots who stood at the birth of the church. The left side altar belongs to Saint Norbert with a monstrance, the right one is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary. The baptismal font and stoups at the entrances are made of red marble. On the triumphal arch, Jan Heřman painted the coat of arms of Strahov Monastery. The organ was built in the year eighteen eighty-six by Prague organbuilder Karel Schiffner.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit the church of St. Cyril and Methodius is during the morning hours of the week when it is quiet and the opportunity to see the interior without crowds. The sunny morning also provides a pleasant light for photographing interior details such as frescoes or neo-Romanesque elements. If you want to enjoy the church in peace, avoid weekends and holidays, when the place is often visited by larger groups.

Selected time allows better concentration for a detailed tour and better quality photos without interference.

If you arrive by public transport, stops are within reach, but the current connection must be checked in the traffic search engine. The stops are usually close to the stop 'Nebušice' or 'Dejvicka.

When visiting, take comfortable shoes because the church has stone floors and some parts may be less accessible. I also recommend you take a small notebook or camera with sufficient lens deflection to capture detailed elements in the interior. If you are planning a visit with children, bring with you some small game or activity that will entertain them during the tour.

Church is a historical building with many details that are worth capturing, and children may be restless during the tour.

Photography is allowed, but the best places for quality images are the inner spaces of the church, especially windows with new Romanesque elements and frescoes on the walls. The best light for photography is right after sunrise or before sunset, when light falls favourably and creates fewer shadows. External photographs are also interesting, especially from around the church, where it is visible its architecture in the context of the surrounding environment.

The interior of the church offers rich details that are ideal for photography, and favourable light increases the quality of the images.

In the vicinity of the church is worth visiting the Church of St. John Nepomuk in Šárka, which is only three kilometres away. This church has a rich history and is connected to the transfer of the parish from Nebusic. Another interesting thing is the Strahov monastery, located five kilometres from the church and is an important historical and cultural place. Both of these monuments are easily accessible and will complement your visit to Nebusic.

These places are historically and architecturally interesting and complete with a visit to St. Cyril and Methodius

For families with children it is advisable to visit the church at a time when children are less tired, for example in the morning. You can show them small details, such as the statues of saints or windows with coloured stained windows that are interesting to view. In the vicinity of the church it is also possible to find small walks or playgrounds where children can relax and have fun. If you are planning a longer stay, you can visit the nearby Strahov monastery, where interesting activities are often held for children.

Children can remember the church tour better and enjoy the surroundings.

For kids

Imagine going back to the past. Instead of cars and cell phones, there'll be horses and strollers. And instead of school, there will be a church. It's exactly what happened in Nebusice in Prague West.

When we stop by, we see the beautiful Gothic church of St. Cyril and Methodius. It was built in 1385. The church is like a big cathedral with high towers and amazing interior. But it wasn't so nice back then.

Themed route

Thematic cruise route: Journey between churches and monasteries

1.Kostel svatého Cyrila a Metoděje (Nebušice) * Type: Parish church * The only preserved church in Prague dedicated to Slavic apostles, built in the 18th century. Its interior keeps rare frescoes and a monument to the patron saint associated with the Strahov monastery.

2. Nebušice stream * Type: Natural element * A quiet flow that flows through the village and offers a short walk along the picturesque landscape. The ideal place to relax between sightseeing visits.

3. Church of St. John Nepomuk in Šarka (Dejvice) * Type: Historical church * The original parish church from which Nebusic parish was separated in the 19th century. Architecturally valuable example of baroque sacral construction.

4. Strahov monastery * Type: Monastery and Library * Dominant complex with rich history, whose founder was patron of the church in Nebusice. In the interior there are valuable collections and monastery gardens.

The route connects sacral monuments with the natural element and monitors historical links between them. The distances between points are short, ideal for a walking trip.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring in Nebusice brings to the vicinity of St. Cyril's Church and Methodius the awakening nature, which contrasts with the calm atmosphere of the historical building. The lighting is soft during this period and gradually extending days allow you to admire the details of the facade at sunset. Nature is in full bloom, which creates a pleasant background for photography. In practice, spring is an ideal time to visit, because there are no large crowds that are typical of summer months. I recommend layered clothes because spring weather can be variable and temperatures can vary significantly during the day. The best time is the morning, when the light is most pronounced and the roads are dry after night rest.

Summer brings the longest days and warmer weather to the Nebusic region, which also affects the attendance of historical monuments. The church appears in the summer sun as a refuge from the heat, especially in the afternoon, when the lighting is intense and can be uncomfortable for a longer tour of the outdoor parts. Nature is in full bloom, green grass and trees supply the surroundings with a lively and fresh nature. Since this is the main summer season, a higher number of visitors can be expected, especially on weekends. For a comfortable visit it is advisable to take with you enough drinking mode and light, breathable clothes. I recommend arriving as early as possible in the morning to avoid the greatest heat and possible crowds that gather later in the day.

Autumn in Nebusice offers a unique atmosphere where tree leaves turn into warm shades of orange, yellow and red. The lighting is lower and softer in this period, which creates an intimate and thoughtful mood around the church. Nature around the monument is in full autumn magic, making it an ideal place to walk and photograph. The atmosphere is calmer than in summer, because summer tourism has already receded. Practical advice includes clothes in colder weather, such as sweaters and jackets, as temperatures fall. The best time to visit is in the afternoon, when the light is the hottest and shadows extend, which underlines the architectural elements of the building. Avoid rainy days if you plan to stay out longer.

Winter in Nebuchi brings the church of St. Cyril and Methodius a specific character, often decorated with snow and ice crystals. The lighting is short and sharp, the fast sunset creates dramatic shadows and a cool atmosphere. Nature is snowy and quiet, which underlines the peace and respect associated with the religious object. In advent time, the surrounding area of the church can be decorated with Christmas decorations, which adds a place to the magic. In practice, warm clothes are necessary, including winter jackets, gloves and shoes with good heel for slippery roads. The most appropriate time is the late afternoon, when the twilight meets evening peace and temperatures are still tolerable for a short walk.
