Kostel svatého Jana Evangelisty (Blovice) Church

The Baroque Church of Saint John the Evangelist stands in the northern part of Blovice. People prayed at this site already in the Middle Ages. The first mention of this sanctuary dates from the year 1374. The Gothic church from the fourteenth century was later replaced by the present building, which the Kolovrat family had constructed between 1760 and 1767.

The church has a rectangular nave with a striking central space in the eastern part. This is expanded by side chapels and a semicircular chancel, on whose sides are oratories and a sacristy. Above the western facade rises a prismatic tower with an onion dome. The facade itself is articulated by pilasters and contains six niches with statues of Czech patrons, which are the work of the sculptor Max. The interior furnishings date from the time of the church's construction and bear the characteristics of Rococo and Classicism.

A cemetery once surrounded the church. On the northern side next to it, an Empire chapel with a crypt of the Kolovrat and Pálffy families was created in 1833. Before the southern wall stands an iron cross from 1873, and on the southern wall itself are a sundial.

The building underwent two major renovations. The first in 1844 was led by engineer Jöndl, the second took place in 1939. A pair of white windows was designed in 1932 by the Prague restorer František Fišer.

Today it is no longer possible to recognize what a prominent place the church originally occupied. It stood on a cliff directly above the river, at the spot where a small stream flowed into the Úslava. The open space between the river and the church only came into being in the early twentieth century, when the course of the river was straightened. The stream flows from the site of a former brickyard at Dubí. Today it is conducted from the station to the river through pipes, and its deep bed was filled in because of the road.

A stone wall surrounded the church and cemetery, dating back at least to the sixteenth century. The wall was repaired many times, but largely disappeared during ground modifications in the 1970s. It was completely gone after further modifications in the early twenty-first century. At that time, soil and vegetation also covered the last visible remains of the cliff on which the church stands.
