The church of St. Jilje in the Strajda near Přežec, located in the district of Pardubice, is an early baroque one-ship sacral building. Its present appearance was created after the reconstruction of the original medieval building which burned down in 1699. The inner furnishings of the church dates from 1703- 1707 and since 1958 is protected as a cultural monument.

The history of this sacral object dates back to the Middle Ages when the original building was built. After the fire in 1699, major reconstruction works followed, which led to the present form of the church in 1703. Further adjustments took place at the end of the 18th century, which reflected the normal practice of adjusting buildings to new aesthetic and functions. A reconstruction of the facade was carried out in 1967 and in the years 70 to 90 there were further minor repairs involving altars, sandtuce, roof and organ.

The architecture of the church is typical of the village sacral buildings of the boasting estate. It has a rectangular plan with a triangular presbytery and no tower. The dominant is the western facade, which contains a typical composition: a middle-placed entrance, a semi-circular window above it and a volute shield at the top. The facade is broken down by lisen frames (double presses), the shield is decorated with balls on the sides and on the top. Side facades are less decorated, with a plinth, a ledge and two semi-circular windows. The roof is saddled, above the presbytery Valba. Above the boat stands a sandtuscan with lantern, onion fighting and double cross.

The Baroque bell tower north of the church is also interesting. It is a wooden building with shingles roof which was reconstructed and modified (reduced) in 1828.

The interior is equipped with the main altar with the painting of St. Gilya and two side altars: one with the painting of Calvary and the other, the altar of St. Mary Magdalena, decorated with the statue of the Virgin Mary probably from the 16th century. The organ in the church is the work of the organist Josef Ignác Welzel from 1855 and was reconstructed by Karel Synek in 1993.

Only one bell dated 1576 is placed in the bell tower. Originally (according to chronicle) there were two bells but the other did not behave. The bell of noon and kneeling took place until the mid-1990s.

Holy Church Jilji is filial in the parish Vápno near Přeč and services are held in it unregularly. Today, as a protected cultural monument, it is an important historical and architectural element of the region.

Visiting the church offers a unique opportunity to explore early Baroque architecture and enjoy the history that took place here. It is a place where you can feel a connection with the past and appreciate the efforts of generations to preserve cultural heritage.

This picturesque church is an excellent example of early Baroque architecture and stands here as a testament to the rich history of the region. Look up at his elegant lines, which will immediately lead you to the idea of a history of change and reconstruction.

Holy Church Jilji has roots dating back to the Middle Ages. But the original building that was built here was tragically burned down in 1699. This fire led to the need for reconstruction, which brought the church its present form. Between 1703 and 1707 the renovation of the interior equipment was carried out, which gave the church its characteristic Baroque spirit.

Let's move closer to the church and look at its one-ship structure. Note the elegant lines and details that are characteristic features of Baroque architecture. Although particular architects are not known, their work here stands as a testament to artistic taste and innovation at the time.

The key moment in the history of the church was the reconstruction of the bell tower north of it, which took place in 1828. Although specific historical figures associated with this place are not known, their contribution is evident in the preservation and development of the church.

The interesting thing about this place is that the church of St. Jilji has been protected as a cultural monument since 1958. This protection ensures that future generations can use and appreciate its historical importance. The organ in the church gives this place even more atmosphere and spiritual experience.

Now that you've explored this memory, we're going to invite you to another tour of the surrounding area. Each section of this place has its stories and mysterious moments waiting to be discovered. We hope your visiting day was full of discoveries and inspiration. Parting with this historic place is just the beginning of your journey to other hidden treasures in our country.

Tips for visitors

The best time to visit is late afternoon, when the low sun highlights the details of the early Baroque facade. Spring and autumn months offer a pleasant atmosphere of a quiet village, which complements the historical character of the building.

For comfortable movement around the church we recommend shoes suitable for the field. Families with children can use a visit for a short walk through the villages and observing the architecture of the old countryside in a quiet environment.

When shooting, we recommend focusing on the single boat buildings and its baroque elements. The best pictures from the outside come from a view from the main road that allows to capture the church in the context of the village.

Since it is a small sacral structure, we recommend to perceive its sober beauty and think about its history, which dates back to the Middle Ages, despite a later Baroque reconstruction after the fire of 1699.
