Kostel svatého Jiří (Psinice) Church

The Church of Saint George in Psinice is a late Gothic filial church situated on the village square, surrounded by a cemetery. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 1964, along with its bell tower, cemetery, and enclosing wall. A statue of Saint John of Nepomuk standing before the church also enjoys protection as a cultural monument since October 15, 1990. Originally mentioned in historical records dating back to 1357, this church initially featured Romanesque architectural elements but was transformed into its current Gothic appearance around 1500 and further modified in 1870.

The origins of the Church of Saint George trace back to when Psinice was part of the Holy Roman Empire. Historical sources suggest that the first church mentioned in 1357 likely had Romanesque architecture, characterized by semi-circular arches and robust structural forms. By around 1500, this structure underwent significant transformation, adopting the late Gothic style prevalent during that era across Bohemia. This period was marked by cultural and architectural advancements within the region, reflecting broader European trends.

Architecturally, the Church of Saint George is a single-nave rectangular building with a five-sided presbytery at its eastern end. The structure features buttresses on its southern side to reinforce stability, while its windows are pointed and set deep within spandrels, typical of Gothic design. A notable element is the bell tower or 'sanktusník,' which rises from the west end of the roofline. This addition was historically used for ringing a smaller bell during certain parts of the mass. The presbytery boasts a cross-vaulted ceiling with star-shaped ribs, and its triumphal arch is pointed. In contrast, the nave has a flat ceiling, while the sacristy features a barrel vault.

The church's interior includes pseudo-Gothic furnishings, with paintings on both the main and right side altars signed by Karel Javůrek in 1843, identifiable by his signature and an acorn motif. The left side altar painting is believed to be from the same artist. These elements contribute to the church’s artistic heritage while reflecting the stylistic preferences of the time.

A wooden bell tower, approximately twelve meters tall, was constructed at the end of the 17th century near the church. This structure combined construction techniques involving both bracing and corner posts, resulting in an octagonal base transitioning into a square upper story, topped by a steep spire that evokes Gothic architectural aesthetics. Originally housing two bells from Jakub Mělnický and Karl Bellmann, one was requisitioned during World War I, leaving only the bell of Saint George.

In front of the church stands a statue of Saint John of Nepomuk, dating back to 1771. Created by an unidentified artist, this sculpture depicts the saint as a young canon holding a crucifix added in 1875. The serene posture and gentle facial expression contrast with the traditional depiction of severity associated with the saint. The base of the statue is a rectangular plinth supporting a tapering column, adorned with relief leaves and inscriptions indicating both its creation and subsequent restoration.

Today, the Church of Saint George remains an important cultural landmark in Psinice. Its preservation as a protected monument underscores its historical significance and architectural beauty.
