Kostel svatého Martina (Robeč) Church

The Church of Saint Martin in Robeč is an impressive early Baroque sacred building situated at the upper part of an oval sloping square within the village of Robeč, Úštěk District, Ústecký Region. It has been protected as a cultural monument since 1964, along with its adjacent Baroque parsonage. Architecturally significant features include its rectangular nave, recessed apse, western porch, and northern bell tower. The interior is adorned with 18th-century stucco work.

The church's origins date back to the early 12th century, with some sources mentioning it as a parish church in 1145. Historically, Robeč was part of the Prague bishopric until the Hussite Wars and suffered destruction during the Thirty Years' War. The original Gothic structure from the 13th century underwent significant transformation after 1650 when rebuilt in an early Baroque style, incorporating its original tower. Further renovations occurred at the end of the 18th century, with restoration efforts taking place in 1880.

Architecturally, it features a rectangular nave and recessed apse, complemented by a western porch and northern bell tower. The Baroque façade includes a volute pediment, while its windows are oblong with semicircular arches. Triangular pediments above the windows display pedestals adorned with spheres. Inside, there is a flat ceiling, but in the sacristy at the ground level of the tower, a cross vault with heavy stone ribs from the 13th century can be found. The interior also includes stucco work from the 18th century and presumed older paintings hidden behind large cupboards.

The church's furnishings feature late Baroque altarpieces and a pulpit commissioned by Count Jan Josef Hartmann ze Sukorad, who was involved in sculpture. The main altar, dating to the second half of the 18th century, features turned columns, pilaster bands, and plastic embellishments, housing gilt statues of Saints Augustine and Gregory. Side altars dedicated to Saint Francis Xavier and Saint Peter of Alcantara are adorned with diagonal pilasters and rosette embellishments, accompanied by pairs of sculptures. The mid-18th-century pulpit is intricately carved, showcasing numerous figures and engravings.

Adjacent to the church stands a Baroque parsonage marked by a volute pediment featuring dolphins and an inscription from 1696. Nearby, there is also a cast iron cross on an Empire-style base from the mid-19th century, restored in 1918. The church's baptismal font, made of copper, survived a Swedish army attack in 1640 and dates back to the mid-16th century, showcasing late Gothic style with figurative reliefs under baldachins.

Since 2004, the Church of Saint Martin has been privately owned and is undergoing gradual restoration. Its historical significance, architectural beauty, and rich interior make it a worthwhile visit for those interested in early Baroque architecture and Bohemian history. Visitors can appreciate its cultural heritage and enjoy the serene atmosphere of this well-preserved monument.
