Kostel svatého Matěje v Praze Church

The Church of Saint Matthew in Dejvice is a notable Baroque church located on a hill overlooking Šárka Valley in Prague's 6th district. Built in 1771, it serves as the original destination for the Matějská pout pilgrimage, renowned for its gingerbread nativity scenes. This charming structure stands out as a dominant feature of the lower Šárka area and is part of the II. pražský vikariát within the Prague archdiocese.

The site where the church now stands has been significant since ancient times. Archaeological explorations at the end of the 19th century uncovered remnants from the Bronze Age, including bronze smelting furnaces, cremation graves of the Knovíz culture, and burials of the Lusatian culture with bent-knee cists, as well as artifacts from the Slavic period. According to legend, Duke Boleslav II Pious commissioned a chapel here in 971 after being saved by Saint Matthew during an encounter with a wild boar guarding the graves of Ctirad's warriors.

The first reliable historical mention of the church dates back to 1404. During the Hussite Wars, it served as a place for Utraquist worship, but Catholic services resumed in 1521. By the late 18th century, the original structure could no longer accommodate its congregation and was demolished in 1770. A new church was constructed on the same site by František Xaver Strachovský rytíř ze Strachovic, a probošt of the Metropolitan Chapter at St. Vitus Cathedral in Prague. The consecration took place on July 4, 1771, with Jan Ondřej Kayser z Keysernu officiating.

Architecturally, the Church of Saint Matthew is an exemplary piece of late Baroque design crafted by an unknown but evidently skilled architect. It features a simple hall structure with a tower and a larger square nave, complemented by a smaller square chancel. The church's walls are adorned with pilasters bearing intricately carved capitals, while its façade includes small gable pediments on the north and south sides, each displaying heraldic symbols of the Prague proboštství and František Xaver Strachovský respectively. The interior boasts high-quality late Baroque elements such as profiled cornices and stucco decorations.

Over the years, the church has faced several challenges. It was robbed multiple times in the 18th and early 20th centuries. A lightning strike on March 13-14, 1840, severely damaged the tower, leading to a fire that melted iron bells originally from St. Wenceslas Church on Petřín. These bells were replaced over time by new ones installed in 1927, which were later confiscated during World War II.

Today, the church remains an active place of worship and is accessible to visitors who wish to explore its historical significance and architectural beauty. The surrounding cemetery, established alongside the church in the early 19th century, adds to the site's serene atmosphere.
