Kostel svatého Michaela archanděla (Michalovice) Church

The Church of Saint Michael the Archangel in Michalovice is a Roman Catholic filial church located on a steep slope above the Jizera River, near a castle within a cemetery. Originally built in early Gothic style during the 14th century, it underwent significant renovations in 1893 by Ludvík Lábler, who incorporated Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Gothic elements.

Since 1967, this church has been protected as a cultural monument due to its historical and architectural significance. Its origins trace back to the 14th century when Gothic architecture was flourishing in Bohemia, reflecting broader European trends. The original structure featured pointed arches and ribbed vaults typical of early Gothic style.

By the late 19th century, there was renewed interest in medieval styles, leading to Ludvík Lábler's renovation efforts. In 1893, he redesigned the church, blending historical elements with contemporary tastes by incorporating Neo-Romanesque and Neo-Gothic features.

Architecturally, the church began as a rectangular nave with a pseudo-Romanesque tower and a square early Gothic presbytery supported by corner buttresses. The renovation introduced profiled windows inspired by the Romanesque church in Vinci, adding to its eclectic style. Notably, the original cross-ribbed vaulting in the presbytery dates back to the second half of the 13th century, featuring clavate ribs set on circular supports with naturalistic capitals. The triumphal arch separating the presbytery from the nave is a bar tracery arch, and the nave itself has a flat ceiling. Additionally, there is a baroque sacristy from the 17th century located on the north side.

The church houses an artistically valuable baroque crucifix and statue of the Virgin Mary, both dating from around 1730, adding to its artistic significance. Nearby, along the road towards Bukov, stands a damaged baroque sculpture of Saint Donatus from 1780, further enriching the historical context of the area.
