Kostel svatého Michala (Rýmařov) Church
St. Michael's Church is located on the School Square in the northern part of the historical heart of Rýmařova at an altitude of 605 metres. As a filial church of Diocese of Ostrava-Opava is part of the dean Bruntál and belongs to the Roman Catholic parish Rýmařov.
The construction was created in the second half of the 13th century with the development of the city Rýmařov. The original church was wooden, only in the 14th century (between 1351 and 1360) it was converted into a brick building. After the war losses in the 15th century, it was necessary to re-adjust it. It was used by Protestants in the 16th century, but repeated fires became a decisive test of resistance. It burned in 1559 and 1561; It was worst hit by a disaster in 1609 when it burned down almost completely and subsequently had to be rebuilt in the Renaissance style. The reCatholisation of Rýmařova took place from 1625 to 1628.
Another serious fire in 1668 brought a new reconstruction. The tower was covered with a needle roof, the interior gained a new look and currently the most famous element of the chapel. In 1681 St. Michael was the patron saint of the city and the church was dedicated to him. Of course, the last big fire in 1790 hit, but the damage was already smaller. Subsequent modifications in the spirit of classicism and historical styles were completed in 1818. In the 19th and in particular the 20th century the protégé retained its value - a complete reconstruction took place between 1999 and 2000.
The building is an oriented three-boat building of a longitudinal plan with a five-sided finish. The conclusion is supported by support pillars with high arched windows. The sacristy on the north side is right with the oratory on the floor. The tower mounted on the west front has the character of a prism structure with a helmet, lantern and onion covered with sheet metal. The roof is saddled, covered with shale, sandtusk is ended with onions.
The interior shows elements of the Gothic core with historical processing. The priestry is encircled by a vaulted vault with sections and stucco riveting into two circular clamps. The tripod of the atrial type has cross vaults with pillars from which stucco passports run out. A wooden hanging circle with U-shaped side arms is one of the attractions. The original interior was preserved by bleachers, altar and especially the Rosary Chapel.
This Baroque chapel was built in 1688 and owes its beauty to the paintings of painter Jan Kryštof Handke (1694- 1774). In 1725 he created a composition with the Virgin Mary, St. Dominic and St. Catherine Sienska on the main altar. Handkova is also a painting of St. John Nepomuk on the side of the chapel. Remarkably, the chapel went through a 1790 fire without damage.
The bells are a story in themselves. The three original bells melted into flames in 1668, but from their remains was cast new. The bell of the Virgin Mary was created by the Lorraine bell tower Stepan Mollot. There was also a bell in the church from 1680, which was later poured over. The sandbox bell dates back to 1689. During the interwar period, several bells were recited. In 1923, the bell of St. Joseph was moved here from St. Martin's church in Jiřikov.
The church with rich history stands in Rýmařov as a witness of the Middle Ages and the New Ages. Its current form - the result of traces of fires, recatholation and gradual education - makes it an interesting goal for those who want to touch Czech ecclesiastical history.

The Church of Saint Michael stands on Školní náměstí in the northern part of the historic centre of Rýmařov. It was founded in the second half of the thirteenth century together with the town. Initially it was wooden, and a brick church stood here already in the middle of the fourteenth century.
The history of the building is to a large extent the history of fires. In the fifteenth century, the church was repaired after war damage. In the sixteenth century it was used by Protestants and in the years fifteen fifty-nine and fifteen sixty-one it was struck by fire. After another fire in sixteen oh-nine it was rebuilt in Renaissance style. In the years sixteen twenty-five to sixteen twenty-eight, recatholisation took place in the town.
Another fire came on the twenty-seventh of May sixteen sixty-eight. The heat then melted three church bells and a new one was cast from their remnants in the same year. The church was rebuilt again, the tower received a spire roof and a new interior was largely donated by Count Harrach. The priest Jan František Pabst deserves credit for the restoration. He was an opponent of witchcraft trials and asked Bishop Karel of Liechtenstein to stop them. In the end he was accused himself and had to flee from Rýmařov.
In the year sixteen eighty-one, Saint Michael became the patron of the town and the church was dedicated to him. In the year sixteen eighty-eight, a simple Baroque Rosary Chapel was added on the evangelical side. Paintings for it were created in the year seventeen twenty-five by Jan Kryštof Handke. Among them are an altar painting of the Virgin Mary with Saint Dominic and Saint Catherine of Siena, and also a painting of Saint John of Nepomuk.
The last great fire in seventeen ninety devastated the entire town. The church this time suffered minor damage and the Rosary Chapel remained undamaged. Reconstruction in the spirit of classicism and historicising styles was completed in the year eighteen eighteen. A complete reconstruction took place in the years nineteen ninety-nine and two thousand.
Beneath later modifications lies a Gothic core. It is a three-aisled structure with a five-sided choir which is supported by buttresses. Between them are tall pointed windows. Before the western facade stands a prismatic tower with a helm, a lantern and a bulb. The interior three-aisled space features a hall church with cross vaulting. The presbytery is covered with a barrel vault with stucco ribs that rest on consoles decorated with cherub heads. The wooden choir gallery is U-shaped.

Seasonal recommendations
Spring brings fresh colors and awakening vegetation around the church, which complements the historical character of the place. The lighting is soft and pleasant during this period, which is ideal for observing details of architecture without sharp shadows. We recommend wearing layered clothes because the weather can be variable. The best time to visit is in the morning when the surroundings are quieter and the air is fresh.
In the summer months the atmosphere is alive and the surrounding landscape is in full bloom. Strong sunlight offers excellent visibility, but can also create too sharp contrasts. Because of the warmer days and the greater movement of people in the city, it is advisable to come early in the morning to enjoy your peace and avoid the greatest heat. Clothes should be light and breathable.
Autumn changes surroundings in a sea of golden and brown shades, which in combination with morning fog creates a very poetic and peaceful atmosphere at the church. The afternoon light is low in this period and highlights the texture of the walls beautifully. For comfortable movement around it is necessary to wear warmer clothes and high-quality shoes that can handle wet surfaces.
Winter brings silence and a sense of stopping to the place, especially if the surrounding area is snowy. Short days and low sun create dramatic shadows that give the memory a serious look. Due to the cold, it is necessary to have very warm clothes. It is advisable to schedule a visit around noon when the lights are the most and to take into account that during this period the opening time may be shorter.
