The Church of Saint Nicholas in Merklín is a notable example of Baroque architecture with origins dating back to the 14th century. Situated in the village of Merklín within the Plzeňský kraj region, this church holds historical significance and showcases architectural evolution. Initially built when Bohemia was part of the Holy Roman Empire, it underwent significant transformation into its current Baroque style at the end of the 17th century.

The church's origins trace back to the 14th century, a period marked by cultural and political developments in Bohemia. Although details about its initial construction are limited, this era laid the groundwork for what would become an architectural landmark. A major transformation occurred at the end of the 17th century when it was extensively reconstructed and expanded, altering both its structure and stylistic identity to align with Baroque trends prevalent across Europe.

Architecturally, the Church of Saint Nicholas features an oblong vaulted nave ending in a polygonal closure. Its tower, located at the southwest corner, is distinguished by a faceted design that enhances visual appeal. The Baroque style is further exemplified by the elliptical vaulting of the chapel attached to the presbytery, adding architectural richness.

Throughout its history, the church has experienced significant events and changes. In February 1817, it suffered damage from a city-wide fire but was restored within a year, demonstrating resilience. The church also houses sculptures commissioned by the Morzin family in the late 18th century, including statues of Saints Florian and Notburga created in 1765, and another sculpture of Saint Gothard. Originally intended for a castle area, these artworks were later relocated to their current positions near the church.

The Church of Saint Nicholas is not only an architectural marvel but also a cultural treasure protected as a national monument of the Czech Republic. Its historical and artistic significance makes it an intriguing site for visitors interested in Baroque architecture's evolution over centuries.

Today, the church remains accessible to those wishing to explore its rich history and appreciate its architectural beauty. The surrounding area includes a Baroque parsonage built in 1712, enhancing the site's historical ambiance. Visitors are drawn not only to the church itself but also to the intriguing sculptures that tell their own stories.

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Merklín offers a unique glimpse into the past, blending architectural innovation with historical narratives. Its preservation as a cultural monument underscores its importance and invites visitors to explore and appreciate this remarkable site. The Church of Saint Nicholas in Merklín is a baroque building with older roots. A church stood here already in the fourteenth century. At the end of the seventeenth century it underwent a fundamental reconstruction and at the same time was extended.

In February eighteen seventeen a fire struck Merklín, which damaged the church considerably. It was possible to repair it already in the following year.

The church has a rectangular vaulted nave ending with a multifaceted apse. In the southwestern corner stands a tower, whose façade is articulated by lesenes, that is flat vertical pilasters projecting from the wall. Adjacent to the presbytery, the space around the high altar, is a chapel with an elliptical vault.

The church also includes a baroque rectory built in seventeen twelve. The grounds are complemented by stone statues of Saint Florian and Saint Notburga, which bear the date seventeen sixty five. Together with the statue of Saint Gotthard, they were commissioned by the Morzin family in the second half of the eighteenth century. Originally they decorated the castle grounds, only later did they come to their present locations. The statue of Saint Gotthard stands today by the road to Ptenín.

The church is protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic.
