St. Nicholas Church is one of the key monuments of South Moravian Znojmo. In today's form it represents a late Gothic three-boat hall, which was built gradually from 1338 to the first half of the 16th century.

The origin of the temple dates back to the beginning of the 12th century, when it was built in a Romanesque style with a tower and at first as a basilica. However, the original plans changed during the construction process. In 1335, there was a big fire that damaged the construction. This triggered a complete reconstruction: in 1338 the construction of a new temple started in Gothic style. Only the remains of the tower layout were preserved from the original building. The Архitekti decided to solve a three-boat hall building with two side caples at both the southern and northern ships. The Northern Chapel was completed in 1419, southern later but still in the 15th century. The crust was created before the northern chapel was completed. In the first half of the 14th century, the second tower was built, so the temple had a tower two. But the second fire in 1422 destroyed the older Romanesque tower irrevocably. The priesthood with the mains vault was created in 1422-1437, the vaults in the ships were finished until 1442. The main construction works ended in the first half of the 16th century. In the 1960s, a musical crust was added to the West. The Gothic tower was later demolished and the new tower in the neo-gothic style was built in 1843-1847.

Today's temple is a three-boat hall building with an elongated presbytery, sealed with a net rib arch, inspired by the work of Peter Parléř. The presbytery rests on cylindrical connections, three ships on slender columns without warheads. The tower was built in 1845-1850.

The interior of the temple increases its wealth. Remains of gothic fresco with Pashian motifs and the resurrection of St. Akhati were preserved on presbytery walls. The late Gothic pastoforium with its original bars from the end of the 15th century is adjacent to the Gothic statue of the Whipped Christ from around 1425. The gothic relief of the lamentation and statue of the Madonna called Chlebova arose in a late goth after 1500. The eight-letter Gothic stone baptist from the mid-13th century has been doing baptism since 1660; The baptism of a group of Muslims after the Battle of Vienna in 1683 is interesting. The 1754 altar comes from J. I. Dasinger's workshop. The globe-shaped pulpit is the work of Josef Winterhalder. In the southwest part lies the glass sarcophagus with the remains of the martyr St. Boniphas of early Christianity. Church owns bells from 1442 (two pieces) and bells younger - from 1955 and 2003.

Welcome to Znojmo, in the heart of the South Moravian Region, where history intersects with the present in every stone. Right now, you're standing in front of one of the most important monuments of this city, the church of St. Nicholas. Stop for a moment, take a breath and just feel the atmosphere of this place. Before you is a building that is not only a religious temple, but a real book of history in which centuries of faith, disasters, and human efforts for beauty and supremacy are written. Take a look at the overall design of the building and perceive its monumentality, which dominates the surroundings.

To understand what you see, we must go back very far together to the past, to the beginning of the twelfth century. Imagine Znojmo at that time, in the early Middle Ages. That's when the construction of the original Romanesque church began. At that time it was a basilica with a tower, which was a typical way of expressing the importance and stability of the church in the landscape. However, plans are never drawn into stone definitively and there have been various changes during the first phase of construction. The Romanesque style with its massive walls and smaller windows was supposed to trigger a sense of safety and unshakefulness, which was the basic requirement in that stormy time.

But peace didn't last. The history of this place is closely linked to fire. In the year three hundred and thirty-five the city was hit by a big fire that destroyed a large part of the original Romanesque building. For many, such a tragedy could mean an end, but for Znojmo it became a new beginning. It is from a small part of the Romanesque temple that the resemblance you see today was born. Three years later, in the year three hundred and thirty-eight, the construction of a new, late Gothic three-boat temple began.

Now please focus on the architecture itself. You're standing in front of the hall church, which means that his ships are approximately the same height, which creates a sense of openness and air, unlike the older basilists. This whole process of conversion and construction was led by Master Mikuláš ze Sedlešovic, whose name is inextricably linked to this construction. Notice the line of the building and its take-off. Gothic was an attempt to reach heaven, and therefore there are dominant vertical lines.

If you look up, you'll see the tower. She has her own dramatic story. The original Romanesque tower, which stood here from the beginning, was unable to resist another fire that came in the year four hundred and twenty-two. Again, people had to start over and the Romanesque tower was replaced by a new, Gothic tower, which is now a characteristic part of the church's silhouette. The whole building was so gradually composed as a complex puzzle. In the year four hundred and nineteen, the northern chapel was completed, and twenty years later, in the year four hundred and forty-two, the vault over the ships was finally completed, which still protects the space within. The whole process of finishing the temple lasted long and was definitively closed in the first half of the sixteenth century.

Now let's go inside in spirit, even though you're staying outside. Imagine a space full of valuable treasures. The inner spaces of the church retain rare gothic frescoes that tell us stories from when the walls were first painted. They are joined by Renaissance sculptures, which brought new harmony and humanity typical of later periods. But perhaps the most fascinating are the bells. In this church are the oldest preserved bells from the 15th century. Imagine how their sound sounded over the city when the Gothic vaults were being completed, and how you accompanied that sound through war, peace, and everyday worries.

The interesting thing that may interest you is the constant transformation. The church of St. Nicholas is not a static monument created in a single cave. It is rather an organism that grew, burned, was repaired and redefined. It is fascinating to think that plans have changed already during the first Romanesque construction and that every other disaster, such as the fires mentioned, has paradoxically led to the construction moving forward in architectural style. The Romanesque basilica became a late Gothic hall temple, which carries traces of several centuries.

This building is today an important cultural monument that combines the craftsmanship of medieval builders and the spiritual needs of people from different ages. It is a place where the rigour of the Romanesque beginning meets the elegance of goth and the detailed decoration of the Renaissance.

Now that you know the story of this place, I suggest you look at the facade and see how different layers of time are mixed in. Let yourself be guided by your curiosity and examine every detail that interests you. When you are ready, enter and be surrounded by the silence and beauty of Gothic vaults and ancient paintings. Feel the space that was built with such patience and endurance.

Thank you for accompanying me on this short journey through the history of St. Nicholas' church. I wish you a pleasant rest of the tour of Znojmo and many new discoveries in this beautiful city. Goodbye.
