The church of St. Nicholas is located in the village of Velké Žernoseky in the district of Litoměřice, near the Elbe. It is a late Gothic sacral building protected as a cultural monument of the Czech Republic, surrounded by a cemetery founded in 1875.

The church was built in 1516 in the place of the older wooden church, which is mentioned already in 1824. The oldest part of the building is a tower from the 14th century and preserved from the original building. This tower was modified in 1881 at the top along with the church. Only the lower part of the portal was preserved from the older church 1535-1562. According to the legend, the remains of the Honeymen are stored on the floor of the church in a small legible board. For years, the church worked as a parochial church in Prackovice until 1864. He then became part of the parish Libochovany, in which he remains today with regular Sunday services.

The construction has a rectangular one-boat plan with three-sided closure, sacristy on the north side and a front prism tower. External appearance is characterized by supporting pillars and Gothic details. The tower carries large sharp windows, a key firing room and on the west side a late Gothic portal with overloaded bars in the lining dated 1516. On the south side of the ship there is a semi-circular profiled side portal and sharp windows with late Gothic circles. The inside of the church is controlled by a late Gothic mains vault on the consoles with wedge ribs caved out twice. On the west side, open Gothic arches lead to the tower where there is a wooden circle with organs.

The church facility dates back to 1881 and bears the features of pseudogotics. The main altar contains three statues: in the centre is carved figure of the patron saint of the church, St. Nicholas, on the sides are statues of St. Joseph and St. John Nepomuk. The walls of the church are decorated with stone tombstones: a headstone made of red marble from 1614 and a headstone with Czech inscription from 1525. A stone plate with four characters belonging to William Kamýcký († 1555) and his relatives hung above the pulpit.

The great bells of the church have been preserved little. A large bell with a diameter of one metre was melted during the war, the second bell from 1863 was taken away. Today the church uses a small bell with a diameter of 35 centimeters. The tower still carries a functional tower clock from 1906. The church remains an active place of parochial life and its architecture represents an interesting example of late Gothic construction with age-old history.

The Church of Saint Nicholas in Velké Žernosek in the Litoměřice region stands not far from the Labe River. It is a late Gothic structure from the early sixteenth century and is protected as a cultural monument. It is surrounded by a cemetery that was established in eighteen seventy-five and gradually expanded.

The church was built in fifteen sixteen in simple late Gothic style on the site of an older wooden chapel. The tower is even older, dating from the fourteenth century. In eighteen eighty-one it was modified together with the church in its upper part. For a long time the church belonged to the parish in Prackovice. Since eighteen sixty-four it has been a subsidiary church of the Libochovany parish. Sunday services are still held there regularly today.

The structure has the form of a rectangular single-nave hall with a three-sided choir. On the northern side is a sacristy and in the front elevation is a prismatic tower. On the outside the church is reinforced by buttresses. In the tower are large pointed windows and a key-shaped loophole. On the western side is a late Gothic portal with interlocking bars in the jamb and with the year fifteen sixteen. From the south side a semicircular profiled side portal leads into the nave. Pointed windows are decorated with late Gothic tracery.

Inside there is a late Gothic ribbed vault on corbels. Its ribs have a wedge shape and are channelled twice. On the west the nave opens into the tower through a large Gothic arch. In the tower is built-in a wooden gallery with an organ.

The furnishings are pseudo-Gothic and date from eighteen eighty-one. The high altar bears three statues. In the centre is a carved statue of Saint Nicholas, the patron saint of the church, with statues of Saint Joseph and Saint John of Nepomuk on either side.

Stone epitaphs deserve attention. In the floor lies an epitaph of red marble from sixteen fourteen. By the wall is an epitaph with a Czech inscription and the year fifteen twenty-five. Above the pulpit is a stone slab with four coats of arms. It belongs to William Kamýcký, who died in fifteen fifty-five, and further to his mother, wife and cousin. In the floor of the nave is yet another, barely legible slab. According to legend the remains of the lords of Žernosek rest beneath it.

A large bell with a diameter of one metre was melted down during the war. A second bell from eighteen sixty-three was removed and it is not known where. Today the church has only a small bell with a diameter of thirty-five centimetres. Tower clocks from nineteen oh-six still run on the tower.

Seasonal recommendations

Spring In the spring months, the church of St. Nicholas in the Great Joznoseks will be dressed in light and green when the sun elongated through the stained glass and creates a game of color reflections on the stone walls. The surrounding area of the church, surrounded by flowering trees and green meadows, offers a quiet atmosphere, ideal for walking or meditation. The air is fresh, but still cold, and in the morning fog often floats over the village, which provides mysterious poetry. It is recommended to visit the church early in the morning, when the surrounding area is almost desolate and the light is the softest. Clothes should be layered - warm sweaters and light jackets, because spring weather is variable. It is also appropriate to wear comfortable shoes, because after the rains the roads can be muddy.

Summer In the summer months the church shines in full force, when the sun illuminates its facade and creates sharp shadows on stone details. The surroundings are lively - the bell rings are mixed with bird singing, and the evenings are so long that the sunset visit offers a magical atmosphere. In the main summer season the church is visited more often, especially by families with children, so it is best to come immediately after opening to avoid crowds. Light but sunlight-resistant clothing, hat and sunglasses are recommended. Due to high temperatures it is advisable to take water and choose the time of visit in the morning or late afternoon when it is less hot.

Autumn Autumn brings golden and red shades around the church, which are reflected in windows and create contrast with darker stone walls. The air is cold and fresh, often with a hint of moisture, and the church appears to be a cozy shelter from the wind weather. In November, in the time of St. Catherine's, the surrounding area can be decorated with elements resembling the approaching advent, but in general, the period is quiet and suitable for the visit itself without disturbing crowds. It is recommended to warm but not too heavy clothing - sweaters, scarves and waterproof shoes. The best time is the afternoon, when the sun boils down and light gives the interior of the church special warmth.

Winter The winter landscape around St. Nicholas' church is like a fairy tale - white snow covers roofs and walls, while ice crusts on windows create unique patterns of light. At advent time, the church often becomes part of the village holidays, but also outside it offers a calm, almost meditative atmosphere. The opening time is shorter in the winter months, so it is necessary to know about specific hours in advance. It is recommended that warm but comfortable clothes - thermal layers, gloves and tight shoes, as the paths can be slippery. The best time to visit is this afternoon when there's enough light out, but the crowds are minimal. The interior of the church is pleasantly heated in winter, so even longer stay is pleasant.
