Kostel svatého Václava na Proseku is a Roman Catholic parish church in Prague's Prosek district and the oldest building monument to this location. It is a Romanesque building, which was built on the interface of the plateau and slope of the Rokytka valley, probably before the establishment of today's settlement.

The creation of the church is covered with uncertainty. Reliable historical data have not been preserved. The oldest written reports laying its foundation for the years 1115 or 1168 are false produced in the 13th century. The legendary tradition retained the story of Prince Bloslav II, who, on his return from Old Bloslav to Prague, appeared in this place in a dream of St. Wenceslas, which motivated him to establish the temple. According to this legend, the church was to be founded in 970. But building-historical surveys suggest a more realistic dating - some researchers are setting the stage for the turn of the 11th and 12th century, historian Anežka Merhautová assumes that the original Romanesque three-boat basilica was created around 1170, and the current portals during reconstruction around 1200.

Since 1311, the parish has been documented in the church, and the names of individual priests have been known since 1356. During the Hussite storms around 1420, the church was torn down, then taken over by the pouquists and repaired it in the 1970s, adapting the original Romanesque building to the Gothic style. After the return of Catholic control, the church became part of the parish of St. Martin's church in the wall. During the Thirty Years' War, the church was burned. It was not until 1675 that the parish was restored under the leadership of the first vicars of Augustine Salat. The Archbishop of Prague and Cardinal Arnošt Vojtěch of Harrach had a significant influence on the rescue of the temple, who ordered the renewal of the Basilica of December in 1667 so as not to turn to ruin after the damage caused by the Hussite and Swedish attacks.

The church has been edited several times at Subsequently. In 1712 a prism tower was built above the priesthood. A major reconstruction took place in 1770 when a new sacristy was set up and windows were extended - but these modifications damaged the stability of the building and therefore a separate bell tower was built in the cemetery in 1783. Other adjustments followed in 1790. In 1874, clock was installed on the tower. In 1929, the parish was promoted to deanery, which remained until 30 June 1994. The 1931 reconstruction brought down the roofs of side ships, the restoration of walled-up Romanesque windows in the main ship and the construction of a new sacristy on the north side. The total reconstruction of the building took place in 1937, the following year the roofing of all three roofs was restored.

Architecturally, it is a Romanesque basilica made from a quartz wall. The construction consists of three ships, each of which ends on the east side with an apsid and a Renaissance hall from 1572. Wealth on the south wall adorns a belt of Romanesque arches.

In 2010, the last recorded modification was carried out - at the east cemetery wall, three statues of Madonna made of natural stone were installed by the sculptor Zuzana Čížková, while there were also park modifications around the church. The church remains a living witness to medieval Prague.

The Church of Saint Václav is the oldest architectural monument in Prague's Prosek. It is a Roman Catholic parish church, Romanesque at its core. It stands on the boundary between a plateau and the slope of the Rokytka valley and has undergone numerous reconstructions over the centuries.

We do not know exactly when it was built. The oldest written records, which date its founding to the year 1115 or 1168, are forgeries from the thirteenth century. Hájek's Chronicle states that the church was founded by Prince Boleslav the Second. On his return from Stará Boleslav to Prague, Saint Václav is said to have appeared to him in a dream at this very spot. According to legend, this happened in the year 970. Another legend says that the funeral procession with the remains of the murdered Prince Václav passed this way on its journey to Prague Castle. A pilgrimage route called the Svatováclavská path then followed this route, along which was carried the Palladium of the Czech lands, a copper medallion that Saint Václav wore on his chest.

Architectural and historical research places the origin of the church at the turn of the eleventh and twelfth centuries. According to art historian Anežka Merhautová, the original three-aisled basilica was built around 1170.

The parish is documented from the year 1311. Around 1420, the Hussites demolished the church. The Utraquists repaired it in the 1470s and gave the Romanesque structure a Gothic style. During the Thirty Years War, the church burned down. Prague's archbishop and cardinal Ernst Vojtech of Harrach ordered its restoration in 1667, as it was threatened with ruin. The parish was restored in 1675.

In 1712, a prismatic tower rose above the chancel. Alterations in 1770, when a new sacristy was created and the windows were enlarged, compromised the stability of the building. Therefore, in 1783, a separate bell tower was built in the adjacent cemetery. The tower received a clock in 1874. During the reconstruction in 1931, the roofs of the side aisles were lowered and the bricked-up Romanesque windows in the main aisle were reopened. From 1929 to 1994, the local parish was a deanery. In 2010, three stone statues of Madonnas by sculptor Zuzana Čížková were added by the eastern cemetery wall, made of marble, sandstone, and granite.

The church is a Romanesque columned basilica built of squared opaline stone. It has three aisles, each terminating to the east in an apse. The building also includes a Renaissance vestibule from 1572. The ledge on the southern wall is decorated with a Romanesque arched ornament.
